Momma Pumpkin

June 4th, 2007 @ 3:49 pm by Mrs. Pumpkin

We have had just about as much trouble finding Momma Pumpkin a mother of the bride outfit as we did finding me a gown! We have spent about six months looking in three provinces and two US states, scouring the internet and going through several trial outfits that were all eventually returned. Today we had a major victory when the possible last resort dress that we ordered from Mon Cheri through NWL turned out to be the absolute perfect dress that we have been looking for all this time. Momma looks beautiful and, more importantly, she is comfortable in the dress.

I love the pearl detailing - it is sooo Momma Pumpkin, and it adds just the right amount of class. Thank God we finally can mark this off the list, it is such a relief to both of us. Mon Cheri had lots of beautiful options for moms, though they are a little expensive. Several of the suits are available in white, ivory or pale pastels, so that they could also be used by anyone looking for an alternative to the typical wedding gown.  Momma’s dress even has a bit of a train!

Have you been helping your mom with her search for an outfit? Have you found any stores or websites that were particularly helpful or that had unique or special items? Are there any brides to be out there who are considering a suit as an alternative to a traditional wedding gown?

My mother’s dress is also from Mon Cheri!! We searched every where from Seattle to Baltimore looking for the “perfect mom’s dress” and found THE WINNER in the Mon Cheri collection. We purchased the dress at the same place where we bought my gown and received a discount.

We shopped everywhere, it seems. It’s so hard to find a nice dressy suit in a pastel color OTHER than white, that doesn’t scream “Blanche from Golden Girls!” Finally, my mom pulled out this dusty rose suit jacket she had borrowed from a friend, and I found a full-length satin skirt I’d worn to Homecoming back in high school, and voila! They matched perfectly! She’s getting the skirt altered to fit, and it’s the perfect outfit! It actually looks almost exactly like Momma Pumpkin’s, without the beading. So excited!

My Mama is one of those moms that doesn’t want to look “old” at the wedding (her words, not mine.) As such, we have had an _impossible_ time finding something that meets her criteria without making me cringe and think she’s wearing something that’s too young even for me! Sigh. It’s a long road ahead me thinks. Love your mom’s dress - super classy and feminine. :)

Yeah…I was so very very disappointed in the department stores!! My parents don’t have the budget to go for a Mon Cheri dress. My mom finally found a pant suit at WOW (Women of Worth) here in Boston.

My mom found her dress online at Chadwicks in the clearance section. She tried it on for me when I was in town and it looks great! She says it’s a little tight around the lap, but the next biggest size would make the top and jacket droopy, so I introduced her to the wordeful world of Spanx!!!

My mom had spent the last year-plus losing weight (doctor’s orders) and really wanted to look great. With her coloring, she is not into pastels, which eliminates a lot of the merchandise available. The dress she decided on was from a bridal shop, the last place we thought she’d find something, actually. (She’d been looking at department stores for gowns on sale after the winter holiday season.) It was a tailored and beaded column (with a matching bolero) that showed her new-and-improved shape but not too much skin.

Yes, when I was considering an evening suit for myself, I liked St. John Knits — great for winter, and many come in winter-appropriate shades of white, cream, beige, and silver. Bargain-hunters: They also have sales (about 1/3 off) a few times a year, and there are even outlets. http://www.stjohnknits.com/sjkinternet/index.cfm

This site is always so relevant to my daily planning. Today my mother and I went out and had her try on dresses. We had spent 3 hours at local malls including Nordstrom’s but we found nothing that worked. We went to a bridal shop and she tried on a dress from Jasmine’s Jade line. It was just perfect for her. She tried on the rest of her choices but nothing worked quite as well. We chose it and purchased it all in one day. I’m so happy that she found a dress that she will be comfortable in and that she can show off her new figure in.

Our wedding is still 11 months away, but my mother has just been casually looking for ideas. We’ve noticed that there is a HUGE gap in the style of dresses available — it’s either super slinky with in-your-face cleavage, or rather matronly and frumpy. My mother definitely doesn’t want to show too much skin (no strapless, halter, or thin straps for her, and no cleavage bearing), but she also doesn’t want a dress that looks like a sack. Stores do not seem to carry anything at all like this!

Second Julie, you have hit on the problem of all size 14-and-up women of all ages throughout all time. Shopping for concerto/soloist gowns in college I had the choice of looking like a sequined sausage or a grandmother. I’m still on the biggish side, so even though I’m not participating in any parental shopping expeditions, you can bet I read these posts with interest. The next time I need a gown for an oratorio or something, I’m checking weddingbee’s MOB posts first.

I laugh at both Mr. Popcorn and Momma Popcorn as his 3 piece suit (made to measure) and her dress suit (custom) each cost more than my wedding dress with lace jacket (also custom.)

But then I got to splurge on my shoes :P

Both my mom and FI’s mom were wholly discouraged by the process–what a nightmare! My mom ended up with a nice suit from JC Penney, but only after a whole lot of looking. She might also go with Spanx, though I’ve tried to reassure her that she will look beautiful no matter what.

My mom purchased a dress - a very expensive dress - that was a tad bit tight, but she planned on losing weight. Well, my wedding is 25 days away and the dress is now too tight! It seems she’s gained weight - and now the dress doesn’t fit. Well, she can get it on but she’s not comfortable. So she’s taking it to a tailor and if that doesn’t work, she has to buy a new dress. On one hand, I feel horrible for her. I know how hard it is to lose weight. On the other hand I’m a bit annoyed, cause it took FOREVER to find the dress she bought and she spent so much on it. It just sucks all the way around…..

It is HARD to find a dress. I was so discouraged and went into Nordtrom’s rack after much praying and there was the dress waiting for me on a rack with like 3 dresses. It has to be altered but it was winning situation. I needed dark too — a summer dress royal blue! I did find Norstroms online had more to choose from.

My mom found a dress at David’s when we went to look for Bridesmaid dresses - it has thick enough straps, doesn’t look matronly/frumpy, and is not too cleavage-revealing. And it was way on sale!
