Beehive

June 5th, 2007 @ 4:13 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. Does anyone know of a website where rei-chan can find a double-faced silk satin sash?
  2. Miss Bluebear is hoping to find a shop for multilingual invitations in NY; any recommendations?
  3. Bobbi is looking for a photobooth vendor in the Dallas area.
  4. Can anyone tell Miss Melodious where to find a simple back lariat (not a necklace; something that perhaps attaches to the back strap of a halter dress)?
  5. starrynight is considering using Salon 4 or Kim Sun Young in Fort Lee for her bridal hair/makeup; has anyone heard any reviews for either?
  6. Is it OK for christina to wear a white sundress with a black floral pattern and black trim to a wedding as a guest?
  7. gabzoots would like to know what the proper protocol is regarding not inviting co-workers to her marriage.  She and her fiance have been at their jobs for less than six months, and she’s worried that it might seem awkward when they simply leave work one day to return married.  Anyone have any suggestions or personal experience with this?

starrynight,
i referred my MIL to Kim Sun Young for wedding day makeup because it’s well known. She didn’t like the way they did her makeup–she thought they put on too much makeup. She was looking for something more subdued. My sister-in-law got her makeup done at Wedding One in Fort Lee and she was pleased with it.

1) rei-chan,
I’ve heard great reviews about romanticflowers.com, but though it’s much cheaper than buying an actual “sash”, it’s kinda pricey if you consider what it actually is–ribbon. However, their Midori ribbon is some of the best quality ribbon I’ve ever felt. It feels more like a piece of high quality satin than just a ribbon. I actually bought the ribbon for my BMs sashes from their eBay store at a considerable discount.
Other stores to consider would be papermart.com and bbcrafts.com, but you’ll have to buy a full roll of ribbon. I’ve bought double faced satin from both of these sources. They’re nice, but not nearly as nice as the Midori ribbon from romanticflowers.

gabzoots - I would say that working somewhere for less than six months does not warrant an invitation. I will have been at my job for about that long and have decided not to invite my co-workers.

I did however invite some former co-workers from my last job (of 4 years) that I consider to be friends.

Miss Melodius - a simple string of crystal beads would be super easy to make. And when I say “super easy” I really mean “all I know about beading I learned from a children’s book.” Hang out in the bead aisle at Michael’s (or even a big WalMart) for a few minutes and you’ll see what I mean.

rei-chan - if you have any sewing ability at all, or know anyone who does, a sash is really just a long, long rectangle. A few years ago I wanted to make something similar (actually just a wrap) and I called a super-crafty coworker…
Me: It seems like I just need to fold it in half, sew most of the way around the three open sides, and pull it right side out. Am I missing something?
Her: Nope.

Christina: I’d avoid it if you can. While it probably wouldn’t bug me if it were my wedding and one of my guests showed up in a dress like that, my thought is: why even chance it?

reichen- romanticflowers.com - I purchased the double faced satin in 2 3/4″ size - 4 yards for about $20 including shipping. Was perfect and exactly what I wanted! :)

Miss Melodious,
try http://www.creme-de-luxe.com/. The owner, Jenn, can make anything at all (i had my jewelry made by her) - and it’s pretty cheap! e-mail her at CDL.jewelry@gmail.com

Christina: Though I’m having a very relaxed, informal-to-semiformal wedding, in my case, that was the one thing that I put my foot down on. One of my friends said she was planning to wear a white sundress, and I had to respectfully ask that she not do that. I don’t know if the bride in your case has the same hang-up, but as Aliya said, better not to chance it.

gabzoots — Our policy was that we invited no one from our current jobs, but we invited people from prior jobs. Once you don’t work with them anymore and you find you still keep in touch and do things because you really like each other outside of work, they graduate from coworker to friend. No hard feelings, and we felt it was TMI for coworkers to see that much of our personal lives.

Christina: My FSIL has told me (3 times!) that she is planning to wear a white dress with black flowers to my wedding. I know that I shouldn’t let it bug me, but it does. Mind you, she also wore solid ivory to my shower, so it could just be the fact that it seems to be intentional that irks me, but…

I say, better not to chance it. You’d hate to upset the bride on her wedding day, no matter how irrational that may be.

We are having the response cards returned to us (we live together, and are paying for the wedding) - 1. Can we use address labels for the response card envelopes? and 2. I’ve read mixed reviews online about including both the bride & groom’s names on the response card envelope since some people “frown upon” people living together before married (I could care less).

Christina:
I really would care less if a guest at our wedding wore a white dress with black floral print. Or solid white for that matter. A white (presumably tea length dress) is not going to be confused for a wedding dress, and will not take the spot light off the bride.

Mrs. Bluebear - I looked long and hard for bilingual invitations but couldn’t find anything here in NY or online - ended up going the custom design route, it was the only way to get all the text we wanted on the invite - Good luck!

Bobbi,

We used the Los Angeles equivalent of this photobooth rental place and loved it. Chose the more traditional b/w photo strip version (even though I believe it was done digitally).

http://www.photoboothrentaltexas.com/

For our St Louis reception we used this company (which now also has Dallas availability), whose photos are 3×5 color digital photos and you get a disk at the end of the night with everyone’s photos. They were slightly less expensive than the one used in LA.

If you can swing the cost, it’s definitely worth it. The guests took home unique keepsakes and we now have two hilarious scrapbooks full of nice and outrageous shots.

Good luck.

Christina - if it is a white dress with some black, then while it *shouldn’t* be a problem, it might be, as some responses above have indicated. However, if it is better characterized as a black and white dress than a white dress with a few decorative elements, then there is no issue at all. Wear it!

miss bluebear- i got my chinese/english invitations at OA graphics Inc on 36 Market Street. Tel #: 212-732-7322. they were really reasonably priced. i did notice they also did korean…i’m not sure if i saw vietnamese too. i wanted to DIY them until i found out they were only going to cost me $1.37 per invite. i think it was 30cents for rsvp’s. most of their invites are red/gold but they did have some soft pinks and ivory colored ones. so it depends on how picky you are. we were happy with ours. e-mail me if you want a pic of my invite. lcheung@acsdny.org

Where do you get baker’s ribbon? My baker told me I can’t use satin ribbon on my buttercream wedding cake and there is a special kind of ribbon that won’t stain? Any ideas on where to get this said ribbon?

thanks for all the advice! it is more of a black and white dress, like go amie said…has black straps, black trim and black floral pattern all over it and is super cute. but we’ll see…i don’t want to upset the bride at all, so if i have a chance to shop before the wedding, i’ll try to pick a pink one :). thanks everyone!!
