Event Coverage

June 5th, 2007 @ 9:25 am by Mrs. Lemon

Before I start to pack up my belongings next week for the big move, I figured it would be best to get some more crafting projects out of the way. Program covers were next on the list, so I busted out Mr. Gocco and had some printing fun. First, I designed the programs in Illustrator. I created a fun little pattern with my rose motif for the top, with a smaller design layered over it in gold. Then, I simply copied the top design, rotated it 180 degrees, and placed it on the bottom (this is crucial since I printed the same design on the top and the bottom). I kept the fonts (Daisy Lau and TrajanPro) consistent as I’ve used them with all the other paper projects I’ve done.

I purchased my program covers (light & medium blue) during the lovely Kate’s Paperie sale a few months back and got all 200 6.25×6.25 squares for $12. Hooray for cheap paper!!!

OK…. time to print out the design so I can start the gocco-fun! I isolated the upper part of the design and printed it out, and then did the same for the smaller rose design. In order to save resources, I organized my screen to burn both designs in at once. I registered the larger design to the top of the foam block, and flipped the smaller design to register to the bottom of the block (notice my nifty little pen line that indicates “top” for me).

All ready to flash! (never forget your blue filter!!!)

All burned! :)

In order to keep the two sides seperate, I used foam blocking tape to mask off the middle of my design.

I used a wonderful light pearl blue to print the large design on the programs. Here you can see I printed one side, and I’m ready to press the other side.

Now the trick to printing another design AFTER you’ve got ink somewhere else on the screen is simply to cover the screen with something. For smaller designs, I use tape, but for this project I just used a scrap piece of paper and taped it onto the screen to make sure the entire area was covered.

I just inked up that side with gold… and continued stamping away overtop the blue ink. I used a third screen (which also has tons of other things on it) it print out the middle text in blue, and here is the finished project:

I wish you could see how shiny they are in person…. my camera just doesn’t capture it very well at all! The colors are fabulous though, and they’re just the personal touch that I was looking for. Now if only we had all of our readings picked out for the ceremony… hmm….. :)

These look great, and I am officially determined to get a Gocco of my very own! I think there are two different versions out there (a smaller one and a larger one). Which one are you using?

Love the design! And thanks for the step by step instructions. I wish I can see the gorgeous sparkle on them.

I’m also in the market for a Gocco. Can I ask if you have the basic PG5 or the PG-11 Advanced Registration model?

Thanks!!

I have a gocco, and I’m wondering - you said you had one screen with lots of stuff on it - what technique do you use for that? Can you re-print on a screen that’s already been flashed once? Do you have advice for how to clean a used screen? I ended up making an awful mess with my test screens!

Thanks!

Hooray for spreading the gocco cheer! :)

I use the small B6 model (light blue) … which is identical to the PG-5 unit (it’s orange). On some days, I wish I had the PG-11 for fancy fancy registration, but for most projects I’ve had no trouble registering the prints myself (using cardstock or just the edge of the plate). The larger (B5 of PG for Arts) model is just too far out of my price range for screens and for the machine itself.

As for printing out multiple things on one screen - PLAN AHEAD! :) You can’t flash a screen more than once, so I plan out a couple projects (or multiple screens for one print) and arrange them on one screen.

For cleaning… Simple Green or RISO’s gocco cleaner (or another screen cleaner from the art store) work really well. It’s just messy… but it works!

Pam - I’m so glad you enjoyed the venue! :) We’re counting down the days… but I’ve never heard anything bad about the Marriott yet from all of the weddings people have had there.

They are beautiful. I so want a gocco to print my invitations and other paper products but right now it’s out of my budget.

Great job.

Is Adobe Illustrator the only way to get all the beautiful graphics everyone uses?

ms. lemon,

i am actually a 1st year in your program, and am sad that we haven’t had a chance to meet and geek out over gocco and weddings. i stumbled upon your posts and vague school references a couple of months back, then had a class @ anderson with k.g. who told me about your weddingbee-ing. you have lovely lovely projects that would def. cost a ton at a print shop. would i be able to keep in touch with you should i buy one, for t.a. purposes? ;) hopefully i can meet you next week at the grad reception…

I really love your DIY paper products (and like a previous post, you really make me wish I had and knew what to do with a Gocco). Oh, I read your “tips” and FAQ about Gocco, but still wouldn’t know where to begin. And my weddings in a month. ;-) Best wishes! Everything looks great.

PS, I have to tell you that as a WSU Cougar all the blue and gold and Rose stuff gets me excited for football! ;-)

Where did you find the rose graphic to make the pattern? I would love to do something similar to this for my wedding programs!

diy wannabee - hey there! sorry I’ve been stuck over in Moore Hall for the last two quarters… make sure you say “hi” next Thursday!!! :)

Susie - Search for “gocco” here on weddingbee and you’ll be able to find out more detailed info!

Melissa - the rose is actually my wedding motif. I reworked the RoseBowl logo (where we were engaged) to create it and it’s pretty much all over the place on my wedding day.
