Petal Cone Template

Petal Cone Template : wedding diy flowers new york post wedding IMG 0040.jpg

I’ve been getting a lot of questions about the petal cones I made last year.  So without further ado… Materials:
-petal cone template (petal_cone_template2.pdf)
-1 sheet of 8.5″ x 11″ paper per cone
-Double-sided tape (I like the Scotch double-sided tape pen)
-1 8″ – 10″ length of ribbon for each cone handle
-2 eyelets per cone + hole-punch and eyelet setting tools
-Optional Embellishments — paper lace, stickers, ribbon, paper flowers, tags

Directions:
1.  Trace template onto sheet, and cut out along heavy blue lines.
2.  Apply tape to right-side, along shaded area.
3.  Roll the cone.  Hold the cone by the left edge, and roll the right
side toward the left edge.  Press to adhere.  Be sure to make the
bottom somewhat pointy.  This takes a little practice, so try it a few
times with scrap paper before you begin using your project paper.
4.  If you prefer a flat, closed bottom instead of a point, just fold
about 1/4″-inch of the end upon itself.  Use double-sided tape to
secure.
5.  Trim the top of the cone to make it even.  I like to use pinking
shears for a decorative edge.
6.  Punch holes at the top of the cone for the ribbon handle, and set eyelets.
7.  Thread ribbon through one hole, and knot.  Thread through other,
and knot.  Knots should be inside cone.
8.  Embellish.

We made petal cones, but then realized that we didn’t have any way to pass them out. When we piled them in a basket, they stood up until some were removed, then they fell over, spilling petals everywhere. How do you distribute your cones if you don’t have chairs to hang them on (we have to wait until we’re outside the church to hand them out)? We ended up ordering plastic self-stick envelope/baggies to put the petals in instead.

I love that it’s made from sheet music! I bought some sheet music that my school was going to throw away a while back in the hopes that I could use it for something like this! :)

I am directing a wedding and the bride has asked that the petal cones be put into pews, two at the end and the petals tossed while the bride and groom comes down the isle during the recessional. Any thoughts how to do this.

Budgeting: A Bevy of Ideas from Snippet & Ink « Planning an Eco-Indie Wedding

[...] Paper cones are an easy do-it-yourself project, and having guests toss rose or bougainvillea petals is not only pretty, it’s cost-conscious (about $1 per cup of petals). (I like this idea a lot – I know where to get great lavender that can be thrown.) [...]

@Melissa:
Prepare the cones ahead of time; fill them as needed by having several baskets available with petals, or bird seed (bag-lined baskets), or flower buds just before the couple departs. Just dip and go!

to keep cones from spilling, line your basket at half-height with chicken wire (two levels best). They sit in the holes, and then don’t fall!
