About Beehive

Beehive

June 7th, 2007 @ 4:16 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. L8Blmr is looking for songs for her father/daughter dance that aren’t overly sentimental (no “little girl” or “my hero” references); can anyone recommend something along these lines (in either Spanish or English)?
  2. Chrissie would like to know whether there is any post-wedding etiquette regarding registries.  She has gift cards to use toward completing them, but is it rude not to leave anything for stragglers?  The completion program is only good for three months, but she’s heard that guests have up to a year to purchase gifts from the registry.
  3. Kymberli is looking for suggestions for slideshow songs–one for the bride, the groom, and then the couple…and maybe for one for photos of her bridal party.  Any suggestions for upbeat songs that mesh well?
  4. Does Impatience have time to get a dress from someplace such as David’s Bridal, if she and her boyfriend (they’re not engaged yet) are talking about getting married in September?  Or should she think about buying something ready-made and dressing it up?
  5. Impatience would also like to know what first steps she should take after the proposal.
  6. Go Amie would like suggestions on how to do her thick, wavy hair in an updo for her upcoming role as a bridesmaid.  She’s looking for something soft and elegant…that doesn’t require a curling iron.
  7. Mira is having a private ceremony with immediate family and a reception one month later for family and friends; should she wear her wedding dress to both?  Or get a separate dress for the reception?
  8. Carissa was trying on dresses and fell in love with “the one”–which, unfortunately, is out of her price range.  Any suggestions how to find it used?  Would looking at a “discount retailer” be a good idea? Should she have one custom made?  Or give up and start over?
  9. Donna has an etiquette question about the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner: should she invite her flower girl and her parents?  How about the officiant?

I have a question. I’m getting ready to put my invitations together. I would like to know how to mount the mat and invitation to a pocketfold. Should I use a special kind of glue?Tape? Where can I buy it?

Keny: Double stick tape will be your best friend! Best option in my book!

Impatience- A friend of mine is getting married in October- just bought a DB dress 3 weeks ago and it’s in already. I bought from DB as well- and mine was in around the same time frame. I wouldn’t wait any longer and make sure they check what’s in stock. If you’re not confident in your salesperson at the store- call the 800 number on their site- they can tell you what is in stock.

Carissa,
A friend of mine fell in love with a dress, that was out of her price range, but she found that an out of state retailer actually carried the identical dress for way less. You may consider purchasing it from out of state and then finding a tailor/seamstress to do the alterations for you. If you have the maker/make of the dress, try Googling it and see what you come up with. Good luck!

keny: I agree with Linda double stick tape is the #1 thing I used for mine. I did have one extra bulky part that I used the tape and a little spray glue. but I really only needed the tape.
kymberli: For your pictures you can do Isnt she lovely by stevie wonder. or sexy back by Justin T.

Donna–I would definitely invite the officiant and his/her spouse as well as your flower girl and her parents. The dinner is for all the people participating in the wedding, and you should ask the FG’s parents so she has someone to supervise her (so you don’t have to!). :)

Donna — yes to all. (Plus flowergirl’s parents, and — if it’s a married officiant — the officiant’s spouse.)

Chrissie — I hated that 3-month window, too. So I let it pass since there are so many people who are firm believers in that 1-year rule. Plus there’s always a sale on something it seems. Tip: the last week (of the 3-month window) Macys doubled the discount. So you could wait til the last week and strategically buy only those items/brands that never go on sale?

Does anyone have any websites or ideas for decorating a tent for a reception? My friend put me on ideas for decorating and everything I see is paper lanterns. Any other suggestions?? Thanks :)

L8Blmr - My dad picked “You Look Wonderful Tonight”. I think that song would be appropriate for you as well =)

Donna - I agree with J! At the minimum, anyone who is in the wedding should (in my opinion) by invited to the rehearsal dinner.

Mira - I think folks would get a kick out of seeing you in the dress, but it’d probably be kind of awkward to wear it all night. I vote wear the dress for a grand entrance, fanfare and all, go once around the room for greetings, then sneak off and slip into something a little more comfortable, to coin a phrase.

Impatience– I also bought my dress at David’s Bridal and took it home the same day. As long as they have your size in the style you want it shouldn’t be a problem, or they can call around to another store that does have your size.

Carissa: I found a couture gown that I must have but didn’t want to pay a high price for. I am having it made for a quarter of the price. The fabric, style & cut will be the same. This has been a great experience because you can play around with your dress in muslin and change any detail you wish before it’s done in the actual fabric.

carissa. i found a maggie sottero dress for $1000. i’m having it “replicated” by a company in NYC for $500. i got to pick out the material…they ask for pics of as many angles of the dress as possible, etc. i get to go for a fitting as soon as it arrives from hong kong. but i’ve seen their other dresses…looks pretty good to me. if you want info…lcheung@acsdny.org

I’m looking for Rhode Island postcards online… I can’t seem to find any that aren’t like 50 years old and yellow. Where can I buy postcards online (not ebay) for RI? I love the vintage-y looking Welcome to Rhode Island postage stamp that was out awhile back but right now I’d settle for almost anything that isn’t yellowed.

L8Blmr - How about Louis Armstrong ‘What a Wonderful World’ or Nat King Cole / Natalie Cole ‘Unforgettable’?

Mira - I like Sarah’s idea about your wedding dress as your entrance dress, then changing for the latter part.

Donna - Yes to flowergirl and ringbearer, plus parents. If you’re hired the officiant, you should probably still invite him/her+spouse but they will most likely decline.

Question: I has originally wanted the Sunday of a 3 day weekend (so I get the Saturday effect but the bridal party (almost all from from out of town) don’t have to take a day off on Friday for rehersal. I just now found out that day is booked at the venue I want. So now I’m planning a Saturday wedding, would it be better/more convenient, for those who attend, for it to be on a regular weekend or the 3 day weekend? Is it better to not take up the guests’ 3 day weekend, or does it actually make it easier for them to still have 2 weekend days left afterwards?
