I’m Hooked on a Feeling!

June 7th, 2007 @ 2:57 pm by Mrs. Pumpkin

I finally painted one of our shepherd’s hooks and got my jars and ribbon out to see what they will look like. Originally we were just going to have the jars hanging on ribbon like so:

But, as I am sure you’ll agree, that seems to be missing something, what the French like to call “a certain…I don’t know”. More substantial ribbon holding the jars up we thought might be the answer. So, then we tried this:

But, that looked a little too fluffy and did not secure the jar very well. So, then we thought maybe just a bow at the top of the ribbon holding up the jars.

That looked a bit better but it was still lacking and was not as polished a look as I was hoping for. So, even though it isn’t the proper colour we tried some of this ribbon with wire in it to mould the loops more:

Which one do you like best? Any other suggestions that I could try?

Actually, I would suggest putting some decoration on the pole part of the shepherd’s hook.

I like the idea of the thin ribbon holding it up but maybe with some trailing ribbons below the jar that could wave and flutter in the breeze…I think that could look cool.

I agree with M. I think the thin ribbon looks best.

I think putting something on the shepard hook would look good, a bow at the top or the middle of the hook maybe?

I don’t think the ribbon is what’s lacking - I think that the jars are way too small for the size of the hook.

I’m tickled by all the British/Canadian spellings in this post.

Agree w/ KDN. The hooks look pretty heavy-duty for those smallish jars, and since the hooks are DIY keepers by your DF (not to be changed), maybe use larger jars? If you’ve already invested in these jars, maybe make the jars LOOK bigger with ribbons/flowers on the jar itself to add bulk visually?

How about the silk-flower-head-basket DYI from last week? Any size or color you want.

Ooh, or something wide and shallow.

I kinda agree with KDN — it seems like it’s a proportion thing. The hook looks too big for those jars.

I’m high on believin’ (doot do doot dooooo) . . . . :)

I like the trailing ribbons idea, floaty floaty in the wind. And I also agree that maybe something bigger could help. Except I see something long and narrow, cone shaped. But I could be way off.

I’d use a 1 1/2″ wide satin ribbon to hang the jar and then tie it in a know, not a bow. Then, I’d let the tails of the know hang down all the way to the ground. Maybe even use more than one color, like a couple different shades of the same pink in the jars? Or even a contrasting color like three different warm browns. It might tie the look of the hook together

Where’s my comment? Oh man. Not good to work and comment at the same time– let’s hope it’s not in my work document.

I unfortuantely agree the jar is too small. If you want to use them, maybe try hanging 3 and see if that bulks it up.

It might be too cutesy, but maybe add ribbon to the hook (like a candy cane, but in something soft like tulle)? Agree that the proportions seem off.. Or how about a vine or ribbon type of swag connecting the hooks to each other? That might also be too much…hmmm…

how about hanging jars in multi-tiers/ cascade? something like this setup http://www.avianyard.com/images/13030.jpg

I actually really like the third option - the jars are a tad bit small, but i don’t think that they’re too small - and the white ribbon at the top balances it out. I like it!

I like the third one best out of the options you presented but also agree that the jars are on the small side.

I like the final option, Miss Pumpkin. I’m sure you’ll figure it out so it looks amazing. I also like how you translated, “Je ne sais quoi” but still mentioned that it’s French. So cute!
Are you finding it helpful to ask the community about all of your options, or is it just discouraging? I say, trust your own eye. We Canadians were born with good taste. :-P.

i like the first option as well. i actually think you should keep the small jars because they’re there as an accent, and shouldn’t have a centerpiece effect. how about using flowers that drape of the jar? this would this create more volume and also give you a little bit of the romantic ‘gently blowing in the breeze’ effect.

i would give suggestions as to what type of flowers/vine things to use but i don’t know anything about flowers. good luck!

I don’t know if this is what Luzl was saying- but maybe hang about 3 jars at different lengths of the shephard’s hook? It may fix the proportion problem.

wow, i should doublecheck my grammar before hitting enter.

i meant “flowers that drape OUT of the jar” and exnay the second “this” in the sentence following.

I like the idea of loosely twisting ribbon around the shepherd’s crooks
