Outer Envelopes

June 7th, 2007 @ 12:04 pm by Mrs. Corn

After A LOT of time and consideration, I decided to include an outer envelope to my DIY invitations. As previously described…the invitations are made with Stardream Sapphire paper and have matching envelopes. The piece with the wording on it is a cream colored paper with dark chocolate brown writing. There is a pocket with the response card and envelope that will eventually also have a map and an information card.

The invitations, once folded, are 6″ x 6″ and wrapped with a 2″ band of cream colored fibrous paper and a chocolate brown ribbon.

As soon as I send them out I will post pictures, but I really want to keep them secret-secret until my guests get a chance to see them.

I had the wonderful people at Wilshire Graphics Press make us a monogram with a copperplate and a cursive font combined. This monogram has shown up in various places in the wedding details and will be on the cake as well.

Anyway, back to the outer envelopes. I finally decided to go with an outer envelope. However, the Stardream Sapphire envelope options are limited and I would have had to decrease the size of the invitations to 4.5″ x 4.5″ in order to get it in both an inner and an outer envelope. So, I made an executive decision to go with a 7 x 7″ Stardream Opal envelope.

I was all set to have Mr. Corn address the envelopes, since I have ridiculously poor handwriting, when I woke up in the middle of the night last week and thought to myself that maybe I could get those envelopes through the printer, and maybe if I could get them through, the ink might stick and if I could do both of those things, maybe I could design** an envelope!!

I am pleased to say that the envelopes went right through the printer and the ink dried immediately. I made them right in Word using the WordArt feature for the last names and the two different fonts that are also in our monogram. So now we have 70 perfectly addressed envelopes ready to go! Of course, the invites don’t go out until July, so hopefully no one moves. :)

Anyway, below are a couple of examples of what the envelopes will look like. I don’t have any fancy programs on my work laptop, which is the only computer I have access to, so I usually just try to make do with whatever I can. Case in point, I had to copy and past the screen shot into Paint, so the colors are a bit off from what they actually look like, but you get the point.

**by ‘design’ I mean, look at a bunch of non-traditional envelopes online and try to recreate it myself with my meager options on my work computer.

It took me way too long to recognize those names.

I love your design. It’s really refreshing to see something new! What a great idea! I think the best ideas come from ones of meager options.

Question: The USPS postage rates are impacted by square envelopes (because it’s not obvious which direction they go into the machine) and other “non-machineable” issues. Is the creative font an issue w/ USPS if it’s not computer-read?

Iris, I took the envelope to the Post Office and the woman at the counter didn’t seem to think that the creative font would cause an issue. I plan on going back to her counter when we actually send them ;) I would suggest printing one and taking it to your local post office, to confirm, but I don’t think creative font will kill the postage rate.

One concern: What type of printer did you use to print the envelopes? I also have stardream and tried to print on the paper, and it seemed to work great. The ink dried and it looke fine. I went back to it weeks later and then I noticed if I really touched and rubbed, the ink could be completely rubbed off the paper since it’s so smooth.

You just may want to verify that it has really permanently adhered….

Miss Corn. the fact that you did this on Word gives me hope. I am the most un-tech person ever, and perhaps I could do that, too! I may email you to figure out how to do it, since I am all thumbs!

Wow, those look great!

I’ve been debating between paying for calligraphy or using the lovely font that Miss. Lemon posted about. This might be a lovely third option. I hate making decisions….

Also, I might have missed it, but what are you doing for stamps?

I have a similarly big (the rates go up if one side is more than 6 1/8 inch), square invitation, (mine is almost 2 oz, not sure about yours) and they are going to require 97 cents postage. Of course, there aren’t 97 cent stamps. So we need to find the best option for combining denominations to not go over by too much. Unfortunately, 29(postcard)+29+41 is just shy of the requirement. The other thing I’ve been thinking about is ordering the old wedding stamps (still available at USPS.com) which are 39 and 63 cents, totaling $1.02.

But I think we are leaning towards doing custom stamps. Unfortunately, they don’t offer custom denominations, so I still need to find the best combo of denominations.

I realize it costs a little more but it might be worth it to go with the $1 Wisdom stamp - which is SO art deco cool - you can buy them online (skip the post office they never have what you need)

Good luck!

Sorry Rhonda and Bree…I had a typo in this post. While I never did find 7×7 opal envelopes, I did get my 7.5×7.5 ones from http://www.paperpresentation.com.

Hope that helps!

That’s OK Mrs. Corn! I thought I was crazy that I couldn’t find them :)

But, for anyone who is still looking for 7 x 7, I did find a company that sells metallic envelopes. Although they don’t sell Opal in that size, they do sell a lot of colors and I was able to find a contrasting color that worked nicely in that size. I found them on

Please read before ordering from textstyledesigns.com!

I ordered what they say on their website are 7 x 7 square envelopes, however when I received them, they are actually 7.5 x 7.5!!! They have a *small disclaimer* that actual sizes may not match the names of the sizes, and now they won’t allow me to return them, saying that all sales are final! Do not order 7×7 envelopes from them because that is not what you will get! Plus they are way more expensive than other sites selling 7.5×7.5, but I was willing to pay for it because I thought I was getting 7×7 :(
