About Mrs. Plumeria

A couple of days after the wedding found Mr. Plumeria and I headed happily three-and-a-half hours away towards Yosemite Valley, ready to enjoy the first half of our two-part honeymoon. Both of us had looked forward to this since we booked our room at the Ahwahnee, over a year beforehand (yes, this is necessary to guarantee a room, especially during the busy season). We arrived rather late, after running sundry errands beforehand and making a few detours along the way to take some photos of landmarks such as Yosemite Falls as we passed by…

… but we were pleasantly welcomed by these extra touches in our room at the famous historical landmark, the Ahwahnee Hotel. We’d purchased a “Romance Package,” which afforded us certain extra luxuries:

Champagne with keepsake flutes to enjoy it in…

… a rose-petal heart on the bed…

… and velvety chocolate-covered strawberries, which I was tempted to sample even before dinner. I was dissuaded from this by Mr. Plumeria, who, by suggestion of ordering room service, diverted my attention from the enrobed berries to the menu, which featured items from the renowned Ahwahnee dining room. The resaurant is reservation-only and normally booked days in advance, and we were to eat there the following evening as part of the package, but we were all too willing to try it out early. :) No disappointment when the food came, and I must say the aforementioned strawberries didn’t even get eaten that night because we were soooo full!

We took an opportunity afterwards to walk around the hotel a little bit. Every bit of the mansion was full of history — small details here and there, artifacts displayed galore, the style of architecture and the choice of decor. Everything seemed to whisper about generations past, giving the place a sense of proud dignity that a modern hotel, despite fancy details and sparkling newness, could never have. We couldn’t help but admire it all.

The small lobby on our floor.

My new husband (!) waiting for the elevator to come.

The glass ceiling in the elevator…

The hallway downstairs, with the entrance to the dining room on the far left…

And the great room, where we took a moment to relax together (and okay, I admit… check email too… but only briefly! Hahaha). It was a great start, but there was much more to come…

I had the happy chance to stay there the weekend following the decidedly not happy events of 9/11. The whole park had hundreds of cancelled bookings so we got upgraded from a semi-permanent tent to a cottage in the Awahnee grounds. Me and my best friend had hiking boots, shorts and skanky clothes with us and we had to cobble together outfits for (complimentary!) dinner and breakfast in the dining room. Needless to say, we didn’t quite look the part, but the painist who accompanied our whole evening in black tux compensated for both of us!! It was incredible and like nowhere I’d been to then or since. I’m so pleased you enjoyed your stay. Can’t wait to see more pictures.

Only problem with so much complimentary food? We were still so stuffed from dinner the night before that we couldn’t crack into the breakfast (omelette station, anyone?) with half as much gusto as we’d have liked. Oh my lord, the cakes….

I love the stain glass in the elevator!

Wow, that food looks amazing!

But I can’t believe how dry the falls are already. They shouldn’t look like that until much, much later in the summer!
