We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!

Who’d Have Thunk It?

June 7th, 2007 @ 6:56 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

Well, as I was spread out on our new (old) couch (yay for hardly used hand-me downs!) having fever dreams, I thought about the things I’m shocked to have enjoyed in the midst of planning our wedding.

5 things I never thought I’d enjoy:

1.) Our marriage prep class. I thought it was going to be a lot of preaching, but instead it was a full day of quality time with Mr. Kiwi, where we learned what things are truly important to us for our marriage.

2.) Getting a dress. Being a fun-sized gal, I’d only had one instance of trying on a dress in a store where they said, “Yeaaah, you’re too big”, in a dress with sizing zippers. So that sucked hard. Then, my second try 7 months later, I had the store (a different one from the first) all to myself, where dresses not in my size- but closer than the other place- were piled into the dressing room. I had the option of having help or doing it myself, and it was fabulous. Sure, I could have bought my Casablanca online for a lot cheaper, but it was worth it to get it via salon. I actually didn’t feel like a sausage in satin.

3.) Choosing readings. I was overwhelmed with all the mentioning of obeying and things like that- but once I got to reading the other ones, I really started to realize how momentous this wedding is. We are joining our lives. No more living in sin (hahaha, marriage prep class rearing its ugly head-  kidding). Now we are about to be married in a beautiful church, with phrases like “Love is kind”.

4.) Flowers. Yes, I like flowers as much as the next girl, just so long as it’s not up to me to keep them alive and they don’t make me sneeze. I was hesitating to find a florist because all we needed was a bunch of flowers to hold and there ya go- bouquet in an instant. Then, out of nowhere, a friend gave us the contact info for Laura, who is now our florist. After a meeting in her house, we loved her and booked her. We loved her so much we would have paid more just to work with her- don’t tell her I said that. Who'd Have Thunk It? : wedding los angeles Happy08 happy08 Seriously, I can’t even imagine doing our flowers myself, I’m too impatient!

5.) Having Mr. Kiwi’s input on everything. From stories I’ve heard about grooms who kind of “take over” a lot of the planning, I thought having a groom with a very vocal opinion was going to be terrible. Well, so far it isn’t. He leaves all the superficial decisions to me (cake, flower choices, favors), and then helps make the truly hard decisions (readings, colors, favors and music), so I don’t feel stressed. Having his hand in a lot of the details has made it easier on me, and for that he’s a saint!

What are the things you never thought you’d enjoy, but do (or did)?

I’m not at all a party-going gal, and even less a party-throwing gal, but I am looking forward to our local all-encompassing pre-wedding bash. The wedding itself is 500 miles away, and so many people at work wanted to throw us so many parties (like, my coworkers wanted to throw him a bachelor party), that we decided to combine it all into one glorious uberparty. My only fear is that it might be more fun than the reception!

I have to agree with #5. My fiance loves being in on all the details and decisions, though he does defer to me for things he just doesn’t “get”. But, at first I was afraid that it wouldn’t be “my” wedding. Then I realized that it never was, it is and always will be “ours”.

wsukarebear: I just chose the readings listed for us in the book “Together for life” or something like that. :) I think I listed them on here somewhere… I think my favorite one is a letter from Paul to the Corinthians. hm… Let me look around. My book is currently in my FMIL’s car, so I’ll have to get back to you.
