Cruising Tips

June 8th, 2007 @ 1:27 pm by Mrs. Violet

Thank you for all your advice. Unfortunately I can’t dive nor can I swim, but yes, I do snorkel (with a life jacket of course)… and I’ve snorkled twice. The best experience I’ve had snorkeling was in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. It was seriously unreal. I should really get back to wedding planning, but vacation planning sounds more fun, doesn’t it?

Since we’re going on a cruise for our honeymoon and this will be our third one, I thought I’d share some cruising tips.

1. Before you book a cruise, a good way to get a feel for the ship is by googling reviews of it. Tons of people have cruised and many write detailed reports. I’m not one of them, but you’ll find plenty of worthwhile reads.

2. If you care about your weight, try to eat very healthy prior to the trip because let me tell you - no matter how good you try to be, you will most likely gain weight after the cruise. It’s just too hard not to with breakfast, snacks, buffet lunches, afternoon tea, 4 course dinners and midnight desserts. If you have a no gain plan please tell me!

3. Luckily there is a gym!

4. If you plan on booking any spa treatments, do so as soon as you can… because they go really fast!

5. Make sure your BF/SO/FI packs a suit. On our first cruise, Mr. Violet did not bring his suit (even though I reminded him several times to) and we actually got turned away from the restaurant we chose for formal night. It was a bit embarrassing but we did end up eating, in our room.

6. Don’t worry about getting seasick. Huge cruise ships feel really stable and you probably won’t feel a thing, but if you do, just head over to the medical center on board. Seasick pills are free. We grabbed a whole bunch!

7. Book tours and excursions as soon as you can too because those go fairly quickly as well.

8. Ocean view with balcony is a must in our book. (Trust me, it’s worth the extra money) I’ve never stayed in an inside stateroom, but I’ve seen it, and it looks claustrophobic. Plus, if you don’t get a room with a balcony, you won’t get to hear the ocean sounds at night or see it in pitch black at your leisure. It’s really beautiful!

9. The usual boarding time is around 4 or 5pm. However, you can board early, even as early as lunchtime. If you board around lunch time, you can get free lunch for that day. If not, you can always order snacks which are available all day long. We didn’t know that on our first cruise, but we’ve learned!

Cruising is really fun and when I was younger, I thought cruises were exclusively for the retired elderly, but I was so wrong. There’s really something for everyone. You can do whatever you want and eat whenever you want. The best deal I think is not having to pack and change hotels and still getting to see at least a few destinations! How cool is that? And if you don’t feel like spending money at the port you’re in, hop back on the ship and eat there. Once you are docked, you are free to go back and forth, but of course some destinations are worth trying out their local specialities. (I will definitely get some vanilla extract from Mexico. I don’t bake but Mr. Violet does!)

Feel free to add your own tips, especially if you have any for my trip! :)

Before I go, I need some help. Mr. Violet told me that I won’t be able to change my last name until after our trip. He booked our trip under my last name. Our trip is two months after our wedding. I don’t really mind waiting to change my name, but do any of you have the same problem I do? When does name changing typically happen?

I got married on March 17 and just now have had the time to do all of the name changing stuff. It is a lot. It starts with the social security office and then the driver’s license place. If you work a normal job, they will be closed by the time you get off work. So, arrangements will have to be made for you to leave work. Anyhow, there is no time limit. You can do it whenever. It has been an odd 2 months of being “between names”. I am glad to almost have it all taken care of.

I’ve never been on a cruise but would love to one day so your tips are very helpful! Where can I read reviews of ships?

we didn’t do the excursions through the ship, just when we got to the place, and it was so much cheaper. :)

The ATM fees are crazy on the boat ($5 on royal caribbean) you can easily go to the casino and exchange money with your sea pass card for free it will just be charged on your credit card as a purchase not a cash advance.

As if you tend to over spend you can change your sea pass card into a cash card where you prepay your expenses.

I agree with jessi… research shore excursions befor e you go - you usually find them much cheaper than cruiseline prices. CruiseCritic (www.cruisecritic.com) is a great resource. I usually read the message boards about each place I’m going to visit, and people offer suggestions about what to do, where to go, and what tours you should do.

Jessi - that’s a good tip. A friend just got back from a cruise where he was completely unimpressed with the excursions through the cruise line. On the other hand, we’re going to a whole lot of places where we don’t speak the language at all, and we’d rather not be standing at the dock with a big sign over our heads that says “Stupid Americans To Take Advantage Of.” We decided to kind of go half and half: at two of the stops (the ones where the ports are furthest from most sights) we’ve booked excursions in advance; at the rest, we’re just going to go with the flow.

A cruise sounds like so much fun!

As far as the name changing. Like garmo26 said, it takes time to do all of that fun stuff anyway. To help you move along the name changing list, try getting together all the info you’ll need (like which things you’ll need to change your name and address for, the offices’ hours of operation, etc.) before you go on your honeymoon. Then when you get back, you’ll know exactly what you need to do and when. To get you started, check out our “What’s In A Name”!

Good luck!! Have fun on your cruise! I’m jealous. :)

My cruise tip: if you’re not going to be consuming much alcohol, see if you can get a soda sticker for your ID card at the very beginning. For a flat fee, you will be able to order endless sodas at any time, as opposed to sending your card off with the waiter whenever you want a drink. It only saves a little effort on your part, but I found it really nice. Of course, it will only pay for itself if you order several glasses per day.

My other tip (somewhat counter-intuitive to the other one): drink a ton of water at mealtime. It’ll keep you from gorging and get you rehydrated for another long day of activities in the hot sun.

put some H2O bottles in your suitcase. the water on the ship is processed there, and there must be extra salt or something, cuz my feet were swelling like crazy!

You girls just got me excited! I’m cruising next week! Southern Caribbean here i come!

My tip is bring your own alcohol. I just got back from an alaskan cruise, and the cruise line gave us DYER warnings that our bags would be searched, don’t even try to bring alcohol, etc. My dad brought 2 bottles of wine in his checked suitcase, and we were able to enjoy them in the room (with balcony, definitely a must, I agree Miss Violet) for a fraction of the cost had we purchased them on board. Don’t forget a corkscrew!

Bring plenty of sunscreen in a variety of strengths (and aloe vera too, just in case you forget a spot). The sunscreen they sell on board (just like everything else) is expensive.

Also, beware of purchasing gems and/or jewelry onboard. The return policies are generally non-existent and you’re not getting a much better price than you would in the states.

Oh yeah, pack a lot of books, load up your ipod, or pack your knitting. The ‘at-sea’ days won’t be completely filled by massage and gym and eating, so you’ll want a way to just chill.
