Globe Spin Honeymoon

Globe Spin Honeymoon : wedding honeymoon tucson Tugela

(Tugela Falls, South Africa)

Mr. Lovebug and I haven’t decided where we’d like to go for our honeymoon. OK, that’s not entirely true. We’d *like* to go on a month-long African safari with a week stopover in the Seychelles. But unless Scratchers starts paying off better than $2 every tenth ticket, that just aingonehappen.

We do know we’d like to go somewhere neither us has been. Both of us being lucky enough to have done quite a bit of traveling, that eliminates some pretty choice HM spots: French Polynesia, Thailand, Greece, Australia, Hawaii, the Caribbean, most of Europe, Mexico, Canada, and England. (I know, poor us.)

We were leaning towards Ireland and Scotland. Being desert dwellers, all that lush green makes us drool. But something in me is craving a trip off the beaten path. Something in me really wants to cross the international date line, the hemisphere, or both.

Last night we played a few rounds of Globe Spin Honeymoon (eyes closed, of course). Our political stars must be in ascendency because our first two stops were Tibet and Liberia. Next was North Carolina. Then after thrice landing in the middle of the ocean, we gave up.

And so it stands. I’m clinging to my Africa hopes, even if it’s just a week of South African vineyards (”just” she says). Maybe see some waterfalls? But something tells me Mr. Lovebug is still thinking much more north. (Maybe it’s that he called me “Nessie” the other night in bed.) I guess we could just go for the Globe Spin Honeymoon. Would it be cheating if I were to carve a tiny nick in it? A little helpful “CAPE TOWN HERE” Braillle?

Yeah, you’re right.

How did you decide where to go? How do you even begin to narrow the wide world down?

We had the same criterion of somewhere neither of us had been, and were knocking around a couple of ideas when…meanwhile, on the world’s political stage…there was a big ol’ conference in Tallinn. Every news break included the phrase “magnificent walled city” at least once. Thus, we are cruising the Baltic, with a stop in Estonia. Power of suggestion, baby.

We’re going to Argentina - Buenos Aires and Iguazu falls. BA is supposed to be a great city with lots of culture, sights, and most of all, good food. Also going to an Argentinean ranch for a day, and taking a ferry to Colonia, Uruguay which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Iguazu Falls is supposed to be beautiful and has the nature component of the trip. There’s also wine country a short plane ride away, but we’re not doing that. Another perk is that the exchange rate is much more favorable than anything in Europe.

We’re doing everything ct is doing–going to Buenos Aires, Iguazu, Colonia as well as visiting Mendoza, Argentina (big wine region at the base of the Andes) and Montevideo, Uruguay.

Why Argentina/Uruguay? Neither of us had ever been to South America, and we aren’t beach-y kind of people.

We have both traveled quite a bit internationally, but haven’t done much in the states - West primarily…we both spent most of our lives on the Gulf of Mexico. So we are flying to SF and driving up the coast to Seattle. I am just really glad to have a nice trip to spend time together and really just wander around.

My lowly opinion to be taken with a grain of salt? Go somewhere relaxing for your honeymoon and save the big, tiring, exotic trips (ie. Africa) for later when you’re more rested and don’t have the high expectations of a perfect honeymoon. My husband and I drove around the north island of Japan (Hokkaido) for our honeymoon, and we ended up both wishing that we could have just laid on a beach somewhere low-key following the monumental event of our exhausting wedding. I mean, we’re big adventure travellers and would normally choose something like backpacking across China (one of my favourite places to travel to, btw). For us, we should have just stayed and relaxed and avoided the constant changing of hotels and ryokans, finding new places to eat, and driving up and down mountains. My husband’s Japanese, but that didn’t make the trip any less stressful. (Also, Japan is not great for honeymooners because most of the hotel rooms only have twin beds - not so romantic!!)
If we had to do it over, I’d stay at a eco-friendly luxury resort in Costa Rica, drink fruity drinks and just enjoy being married.

I had friends who married in Newfoundland, and spent a month road-tripping Hwy 1, ending in Victoria, BC. Definitely good a way to get to know each other reallllly well.

I’m all for the relaxing honeymoon. I mean the point of the honeymoon is to be in bed, no?

We had both been on cruises before, but had never taken a vacation together. FH had never been on a Carnival cruise, and because I had, we got a super great deal where we paid the cheapest rate for the best type of room. We are cruising the Western Caribbean - Grand Cayman, Jamaica, Cozumel - which neither of us have ever been to.

Cruises are so fantastic because of how cheap it all is when you really think about all the stuff you get for the money. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that we’re within driving distance to our depart port, saving tons on not having to pay for airfare!
