About Beehive

Beehive

June 12th, 2007 @ 4:16 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. its_v’s invites are 7×7, and she’s wondering if it will look cheap if she mails them from work, using the big, white (and ugly) Pitney Bowes stamp.
  2. Also for its_v, can anyone recommend a good dress alteration place in NYC?
  3. jlb07 is looking for recommendations for hair/makeup stylists in Brooklyn/NYC; has anyone worked with Kelly Shultz of Makeup by Lauren Kelly?
  4. sackets2007 would like to know if there’s a particular program that works well for making storyboard collages?
  5. Can anyone tell J where to buy Chinese frog loop buttons?  She’s looking for brown ones, preferably less than 50 cents each.
  6. T would like to know if anyone has used Cudge.net; if so, how was the quality of their products, shipping service, etc.?
  7. Can anyone tell Jen where to find flourishes for DIY invitations?
  8. Andrea would like to have a small, intimate bridal luncheon for her bridesmaids and family the Friday before her wedding.  But she’s worried about hurting the feelings of other, univited guests who’ll be in town for her wedding by then.  Thoughts?
  9. Miss Emerald would like to know: for those using a photo guestbook (MP, Blurb, etc.), what type of pen will you put out for signing?  She’s worried a ball point pen will indent the pages and a Sharpie might bleed through or smudge…

T - I ordered about 200 votives from cudge.net and was so pleased with the product. I tested a candle and it burned for almost 12 hours. The shipping was fast and all of the votives arrived in tact. I would recommend them!

its_v - honestly, I don’t notice the stamps. However, I feel the need to mention that it’s a felony to use work resources for personal use.

Jen - istockphoto.com! They have tons of great options, and they’re all quite inexpensive.

Andrea - I think people coming to a wedding understand that sometimes they won’t be invited to certain functions. If you’re worried, try to get someone who you’re close to but who wouldn’t be invited to do something else at the same time for guests who aren’t invited to your luncheon. (They could go to a museum, take a tour, etc.)

its_v — i’m altering my gown at Eric Cleaners in Queens Elmhurst (on Elmhurst Ave. & Broadway, next to Walgreens, across the street from NY supermarket) — i heard from my future-cousin-in-law that they do amazing work : ) & from what i’ve experienced, they’re very friendly and affordable.

My first hair trial is this Saturday, should I bring my veil with me to the appointment? Thanks!

I’ve got a question!
How do you word your invitation when your wedding is at 5:30? Do you write it out “Five Thirty in the Evening” or “Half Past Five in the Evening”? Any other suggestions?

Does anyone know of a bridal website that carries hair combs for less than $50 but still looks nice? I’m looking specifically for those adorned with pearls/crystals.

Katy: it’s half past five in the evening.

sackets2007: Just use PowerPoint. You just put the pictures on a blank slide and arrange them to your liking. You can then save the slide as a .jpg for easy uploading and sending.

Katy,
I put “half past five o’clock in the evening.”

Jen–do you mean flourishes that you want to print onto the invites? Font sites like DaFont and urbanfonts have a great selection. you could also use stamps.

1. like other poster said, not a great idea to use work resources for your personal use, saving money on postage is not worth risking your job.
no one will care about what the stamps look like though.

I found a totally gorgeous dress for $3000 in a fancy store. I found someone on Ebay who makes basically designer replicas and can do my dress for about $500. Does anyone have experience or advice with this? The link is http://myworld.ebay.com/bridal_dress_for_you/

Andrea — No worries, most guests don’t want the full BM treatment or its obligations. It’s nice to keep most/all “wedding party” events exclusive so the BMs/GMs feel appreciated and singled out for their extra time and effort (and let’s face it, expenses). Don’t dilute a special event with all those extra folks. Also some events are better as all-women or all-men, anyway.

It’s V: Would your employer really let you use the Pitney Bowes machine for your mailing?

it’s v–I second the motion on noooooooo to the mailing invites from work idea. It may seem “free” since the machine magically stamps each envelop, but it’s not worth risking your job just to save a few bucks on stamps. A square envelop requires more postage than a rectangular envelop, and the accounting office will take notice of an unusual mass-mailing setting like that. Also, some machines have a limit on how much postage they have, and it would be very hard to explain if it “ran out” in the middle of your project and your coworkers started investigating.

Mrs. Bee–I don’t think I need my question posted anymore. Thanks!

Katy–I think “half after five o’clock” is better than “half past five o’clock.” See Chad_n_Jared’s bio on TheKnot for more details.

A few weeks ago we got a letter in the mail with our deposit back for our reception site, not even a phone call!!! “Due to unforeseen circumstances”, they will not be able to hold our date of 7/5/08. This place was supposed to be built and ready by November 2007, but they don’t know when it will be started or completed now. Has anyone experienced this and been so bummed that it’s hard to start over??? I know it could be worse - but it just puts a damper on it when you think you have found your venue. Plus to top it all off, that same week, for some reason this my favorite site, Weddingbee (which kept me busy at work during down time & given me so many ideas!!) is now all of the sudden blocked!!! Could anything else go wrong???
