NEEDED: A Personal Cooling System

June 12th, 2007 @ 1:55 pm by Mrs. Emerald

Something that will attach to the inside of my crinoline and blow cool air onto my legs. Ok, sorry, not a pretty picture there silly012 Let me back up…

Last night, just for the heck of it (and cuz I lost two lbs this week, woohoo) I decided to revisit my dress. And I mean the whole shebang: Spanx, crinoline, dress, sash, brooch, earrings, bracelet, shoes, veil and all! Unfortunately, the damn thing is still painfully tight, so I broke a sweat trying to get myself into it and was worried about breaking the zipper (no wonder you always see pictures of brides getting a lot of help from their attendants when dressing)… I realized that it is freakin HOT in there!! I had everything on for less than 10 minutes, and I was already sweating bullets… especially the crinoline. Who invented such awful, unbreathable, synthetic fabric? Is there a such thing as a 100% cotton crinoline?! I would totally invest in one. Unfortunately my dress is not “full” enough to wear without a crinoline… or maybe I can ask my seamstress to sew on a layer of tulle to the inside of my dress which flares out from the top of my knees (the dress has a trumpet flare).

But seriously, oh Wise Brides, how do we/did you manage to stay cool on your wedding day?

On a brighter note, I think I can finally stop second-guessing my dress decision!! I bought it at only the second store I visited and after trying on less than 15 dresses. Since then I’ve been wistfully thinking of all those other fabulous, frothy concotions that I’ve missed out on. But last night I truly felt like a bride-to-be… and it felt GREAT!! laughin011

All these tales of fittings are driving me mad. I’m dying to get back into mine :(.

As to the cooling problem, hmm…assign someone to stay handy with a cup of chopped ice to munch?

I am having the same problems as you. I was trying on my dress at the shop for a fitting and I was so hot! I am thinking I will be carrying a hankie down the aisle, not to wipe my tears but to wipe the sweat off my brow. Thank goodness my dress is so worth it! I love it!

Maybe you could store your spanx in the freezer the night before…Heck, maybe I will!

Truly though, best way to stay cool is to put something cold on the back of your neck - maybe you could assign someone to keep a cool, DRY cloth on hand to cool you down?

I’ve heard of these cooling gel sheets:

That supposedly help cool you down if you wear them under your dress. Maybe it would be worth a shot!

How about one of those misty mates? Fill it with some rejevenating spring water or something? otherwise, I agree with Miss Lovebug re: the ice cubes.

What great timing. I was just looking up to see the average temp on my wedding day…in October in Tucson, the average is 85! I was just thinking, how will I keep cool and prevent the very uncomfortable knee sweat! Thanks for your timley post!

well, it was 88 degrees on my wedding day, and people later told me the A/C in the reception (a renovated mansion) was not working right. BUT, I was so crazed, I did not even think about the heat. I seriously didn’t even know I was hot, that’s how much was going on that day. Don’t worry, Just make sure there is a fan in the brides room, and maybe in the bathroom of your reception site.

Just keep the A/C turned up, some water (with a straw) on hand, and maybe a cold compress or something to put on the back of your neck.

Also, as you alluded to, you won’t be writhing around by yourself on your wedding day to get all this stuff on because you’ll have your bridesmaids, mom, etc. to help. I wouldn’t sweat it…haha, get it…sweat it!

Sorry, winter bride here!

I think Impatience is onto something — they make stuff for menopausal women dealing w/ heat flashes! Maybe also for preggers.

Also lots of deodorant and melt-proof hair and makeup. Especially light foundation, so your face can breathe.

I picked a lightweight dress that didn’t require a crinoline! :D But seriously, I’d have never though about paying attention to that if I hadn’t of read about people’s problems online.

I’m similarly worried about this too. One of the main things I’m doing is that I have a small hoop skirt (it is actually adjustable) instead of a regular crinoline. I’m hoping that by keeping the fabric away from my legs there will be some air circulation under the dress and it will keep me a bit cooler.

There are cotton hoop skirts, most require you to also have an “overskirt” (otherwise you can see the hoops through the dress a bit). I ended up not getting a cotton one, but I kinda wish I had.

I’ve also been thinking about some sort of these: https://www.bloomers4u.com/
just getting the synthetic fabric off your skin should help a bit.

Lord, this conversation sounds like something out of the 19th century! Now we know firsthand why these dresses are no longer accepted by women for daily wear, eh?

you could, perhaps, try a hoopskirt instead of a crinoline? That way you have the fullness still, but you don’t have anything in contact with your legs. Just make sure to pull up the back when you sit or the hoop could ride up and give your guests a little show…

I felt like I was sweating buckets trying on dresses (disgusting, I admit) but the day of I was cool as a cucumber. No idea why except that I was so happy and focused on a zillion things that I don’t think I have time to be hot or to worry about it!
