Haircomb Crisis

June 13th, 2007 @ 10:30 am by Mrs. Tomato

Less than three weeks away and I still have not found an acceptable hair comb to go with my hairdo! Way to go Miss Tomato. whateva06 I just realized today that if I don’t get a move on, I may have to request expedited shipping, and who wants to pay for that?

Originally, I was not planning to have any hair accessories (except for the veil of course). But when I had my final hair trial a few weeks ago, the stylist suggested that I find a hair comb that would go on the side of my head. I’m having a half updo with a side part, and I had to admit an ornamented hair comb would make my hair look more elegant. Unfortunately, the hair comb she demonstrated on me costs $140 which I am not willing to pay.

My requirements for “the” hair comb:

1) Less than $50, but doesn’t look “cheap.”

2) More than 2″ but less than 5″ in length (I don’t want a tiara on the side of my head).

3) A combination of swarovski crystals and pearls, as I want a little sparkle but not too much.

4) Should go with my Monique dress:

5) Should go with my hair, which is *something* like this, although this wasn’t from my final hair trial (I didn’t take pictures at that one, silly me!). Basically the difference is that I will have more loose hair in the front and there will be a left side part instead of the right in this picture.

6) Should somewhat match with my necklace, which I’m buying from Nordstrom (this is the bracelet version, I can’t find a picture of the necklace anymore):

So I scoured Ebay and Etsy and didn’t find any I liked. After an hour of web surfing, here are the few I found that were under $50:

14409

$39.25 at bridalpeople.com

S-2152

$45 from veilshop.com. I love the organic look but I’m not sure what the flowers are made out of…

mt1207

$35 from smartbrideonline.com. The same one is at bridalpeople.com for $10 more.

1-27-06 054

$19.99 from WhiteAisle.com but I’m worried it’ll look a little “cheap”?

7524large

$39.00 from naugi.com.

I like the first two for their “organic” feel but I don’t think it goes with my necklace too well. Now I may be leaning towards the last one. What do you all think?

I really love the one from veilshop! It’s so elegant and vintage looking.

BTW, I bet this item is a good “something borrowed” if you have a friend/relative who wore one you liked?

Don’t forget it doesn’t necessarily have to be a comb - my hair accessory is actually a broach - like a PIN broch - and we’re fastening it in with bobby pins or a comb (haven’t decided). Even up seeing it at a little boutique and loving. Just a thought! Combs are cheap at craft-type stores so go for something you love and you’ll figure out how to make it work. GOOD LUCK ! You’ll look beautiful no matter what!

I like the last one…another option would be to find a brooch that you can attach to a plain comb or barrette…good luck! I am on the same search :-)

Definitely the last one. It was what I was picturing before I even saw the options.

I like the first one or the last one. The last one is very elegant, while the first is, as you said, more organic. But they’re both absolutely beautiful.

Ok…I was going to blog about this later but try looking at http://www.hairboutique.com. Not sure if they will have what you are looking for, but I was surprised to see things there that I haven’t found elsewhere.

Definitely like the last one and was going to say that and saw that you said that was your preference too. I think you’re on the right track!
Without meaning to be flippant, I think this kind of purchase can be a ‘it looks good from a distance’ type as it’s the overall effect you’re after. I can’t imagine a single guest is going to report back afterwards, lovely bride, lovely reception, tasty food. Shame about the hair slide.
Would definitely look lovely in the hair but I think you can do a quick purchase and tick it off your list without worrying about it in too much detail?

I’m going to be different and say #3- I think it complements your jewelry the best.

The last one, definitely. I like #2 with the resin flowers, but the last one goes best with your other jewelry.

Oooh! I wore the last one for my wedding! So I guess that one would get my (biased) vote.

Wanna see? Pics are in my knot bio:

I wore the last one for my wedding too! It was perfect. I wore it in the middle of my updo and it was just enough without being too much.

I REALLY like the first two. Those flowers are the prettiest. But if you’re concerned about the comb matching you necklace, I would think the whiteaisle one matches best.

Also, check bridal/designer/”better” consignment shops for hair do-hickeys that are different and not expensive. I see these all the time (NYC), along with other great accessories.

I am selling my hair comb from Naugi (just like the one you have pictured). It has never been worn, I ended up going with something else. You can email me at:
mskipoff (at) gwgate (dot) lib (dot) iastate (dot) edu
if you are interested, just make sure to put “hair comb” in the subjext line so I don’t think it’s junk.
