About Mrs. Pumpkin

Ironic*

June 13th, 2007 @ 4:45 pm by Mrs. Pumpkin

We all know that rain on your wedding day is not ironic (right, Alanis?), it is simply bad luck. Well, that is exactly what Mr. Pumpkin and I have been having this week! On Monday, Mr. P and I were helping my Mom fix and paint her deck, and Mr. P sprained his ankle! Poor Mr. P - he feels so badly about the whole thing. At the moment (three days before the wedding) he still can’t put any weight on it and I don’t foresee that getting much better before Saturday. What to do? I feel as though we’re in the middle of a John Irving novel, as we are just “waiting and seeing”. We go to see the doctor again tomorrow, so if I have time I will post an update for you after that. Here’s a gross picture of his ankle that I know you are all dying to see…

On top of that I have somehow managed to lose Mr. P’s wedding shoes! I have no idea where they went - we will be conducting a property-wide search tomorrow for those suckers. They are now even more important because Mr. P can’t have slippery shoes while walking with crutches!

And, the third instance of bad luck is really stupidity dressed up in bad luck’s clothing. Remember my post on travel insurance and how I was adamant about having trip interruption and trip cancellation coverage? We were mostly worried about my ailing Grandmom at the time, but since her health was improving we decided to save some money and only go with the trip interruption coverage. Doh! So now if we can’t go to Europe because of Mr. P’s ankle, we will have lost all of the money we spent on the trip thus far - which is a lot!!! Too much to lose–so at the moment, we are still planning on going. I guess we will just be taking a lot of cabs! Anyone know how big of a hassle it will be to take crutches on an airplane? I am guessing we should be giving ourselves extra time to go through security…

Also, if (God forbid) anything happens to Mr. P’s ankle while we are away, we’ll have no coverage because it is now considered a “pre-existing condition”.

Since I don’t really know what else to do, I have (foolishly?) been going ahead as planned and here are some of the things I have been working on in the past two days:

A wreath that Momma Pumpkin made to hang on the tree behind us while we sign the marriage license:

Some favour-esque packages that I am including in the Grandmom’s OOT bags and the gifts for the attendants:

They are all filled with our custom mix from Translucent Chocolates.

Pashmina basket in case some of the guests are cold after the sun goes down:

And finally, 160 chair sashes. All ironed and tied in bows.

So, dear Weddingbee readers - wish me luck in the next three days, I clearly need it!

Well, I’d say break a leg on Saturday, but under the circumstances I don’t think that would be appropriate! Best of luck with all these dilemmas, Miss Pumpkin. But in the end, all that matters is that you’re married. :)

OMG that is so sucky! I’m so sorry! It sounds like you’re doing all you can do - which is press forward. Good luck and hang in there! I’m sure you will have a wonderful time anyway….and maybe this will even distract you from any other worries, nervousness, etc?

Crutches on an airplane won’t be a problem. They have a closet in the front for garment bags and things like crutches/canes. Just ask the flight attendant. And I think most airports have wheelchairs you can use or they might drive you around in that little taxi thing. Have a great time regardless!!

So sad! :(

Absolutely call the airlines ahead of time and tell them you will need assistance–my mother has MS and can’t walk long distances very quickly, so when she flys she has wheelchairs waiting at every gate. It is no hassle for her, and she gets to board early which is also nice. :) Since the airlines have the resources, you should definitely use them!

I just got back from a travel excursion on crutches…not too bad. The crutches were fine in the airport and I had no security issues. I have always heard rain on your wedding day was good luck. It rained on my parent’s (41 years later, still together) and my brother’s (12 years and going).
Keep your chin up! :)

Um…. Not to be a downer but has he gone to the doctor’s or the hospital to get x-rays? Those purple blotches make me think he’s got a broken bone. My FI had a snowboarding accident 2 years ago - we thought he sprained his ankle but it didn’t get better after a few days and he had those awful purple blotches on his feet/ankles, so we took him to the emergency room… when he went in to get x-rays they said that the blotches were because he had a fracture and the bone was cutting into the blood vessels in his ankles and those blotches are formed by blood pooling under the skin. (sorry, gross, i know)

Seriously, take him to the emergency room ASAP if you haven’t already!

oh my gosh! thats terrible!

I wish you the best of luck on your wedding and more importantly, that Mr. Pumpkin gets better soon.

On the bright side, you will be married soon! And that is the important thing!

Awwww! I’ll send good thoughts and wishes your way. Just a thought - As far as your travel goes, make sure you think ahead with any tours, etc. that you might have planned. I know there can be certain long walks that might not be crutch-friendly. Best wishes with everything.

Man, I’m sorry!

I know it doesn’t seem like it now, but in 20 years you’ll look back and laugh about it.

If only you could kiss it and make it better. Well, hope he can rest and do whatever tricks the doctor suggests to try and accelerate healing (hot/cold compresses, vitamins, elevation, I don’t know, I’m not medically trained at all!). Seriously, though, make sure it’s just a strain and not a break!

Might need to borrow some soft black shoes…

That really sucks about the ankle thing, elevation and ice are the best things for it! In terms of crutches in the airport, it’s really not a big deal and they usually let you board the plane before everyone else, which is always a plus!

Good luck!

Hm… Don’t know if this is a possibility, but when I sprained my ankle, I got some acupuncture done, and it helped a LOT.

Either way, I’m sure it’ll all work out just fine!

Hi Kesm,

Yes, we did go to emergency right after it happened and he was x-rayed there. Nothing broken, just torn ligaments.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone!
