Wedding Program Part I

June 16th, 2007 @ 6:13 pm by Mrs. Snow Pea

Father O’Neil: And now for our second reading I’d like to ask the bride’s sister Gloria up to the lectern.
John Beckwith: 20 bucks First Corinthians.
Jeremy Grey: Double or nothing Colossians 3:12.
Gloria Cleary: And now a reading from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians.

~Wedding Crashers, 2005

The wedding program text is almost complete! We were given a book called Partners in Life and Love by Giandurco and Bonnici. It’s a preparation handbook covering Catholic marriages similar to the book we received at Precana. However, this book contains the format for a Catholic wedding - all the readings are laid out and Mr. Snow Pea and I just have to check which reading we would like to use.

I typed the program up line by line based on this book. Most weddings that I have attended do not include the readings in their program and I keep hearing comments from guests saying, “Oh how are we going to follow along?” So I thought I would cater to all those would want to follow along. It’s a nice keepsake as well.

For the titles, I used a font called “Beautiful ES” (font size 22), a font that I downloaded for free. Since it is a word file, I went with a simple script font that would not enlarge my line spacing; therefore, pushing my regular text down. Had I done it in Illustrator or Photoshop like Miss Spider, I could use fancy fonts and move the regular text around as I like and not worry about spacing. Since it was so long and so much text, I used MWord over Photoshop or Illustrator.

We didn’t know who was supposed to do the readings. We had no rhyme or reason. We didn’t know if it would offend someone if we didn’t ask him or her. We didn’t know if we should choose the godparents to read. For my bridal shower, every guest was asked to write down some marriage advice. My future sister in law wrote Corinthians 12:31-13.8 down to me, so that’s why I chose her to read. Then the other choice was Mr. Snow Pea’s favorite uncle who is also his godfather.

Who are you having to do your readings?

We wanted to include our mom’s in the ceremony, so we asked them to do our two readings.

My FI’s two sisters (neither are BMs) are doing our readings. Those lines from Wedding Crashers make me hesitant to use either of those readings, even though I really do like them. :(

what a great idea to include the full text! it will be great for people (especially non-catholics) to follow along!
our readings will be read by close friends who aren’t in the wedding party. i just asked one of the friends today, and he was so honored to be included =)

this is why i love wedding bee! i just finished choosing our readings for our catholic ceremony, though my wedding is on Dec.26th this year.
I chose Sirach 26:1-4, 13-16 for the first reading, second reading Ephesians 5:21-23,25-28 , Mark 10:6-9 for the gospel.
We’ll be having a cousin from either side read.
I noticed from your prog. it seems you’re not having a eucharistic celebration? i didnt know that part could be skipped, i guess it will considerably reduce the length of the ceremony….cheers

We are haveing a catholic cermony and are having comunion but not a mass (they would not allow us unless we brought our own preist) I love the idea of writing out the readings.. I always like to follow along so I think we are going to do this as well.

PS… we also picked Sirach 26:1-4, 13-16 fro the first reading but went with Hebrews 13:1-4a, 5-6b for the second reading.. we have not yet picked our gospel though

I also put in the readings in my program. We have a lot of non-Catholic friends and his family, so I thought it was easier for guests that an unfamiliar with the books. We’re doing a full mass with the eucharist, so it also gives those non-Catholics something to look at while they’re waiting.

I chose people that I really wanted to be involved that didn’t have another role– like male friends who can’t be bridesmaids (well, they could, but…), my brother-in-law, and my cousins.

My tip is to wait and see who RSVP’s “yes” first and then choose among the “yes” guests. It’s not like people need a lot of time to prepare. This also avoids pressuring people to attend if they weren’t going to, and prevents anyone from being “second choice.”
