How We Met

June 18th, 2007 @ 5:54 pm by Mrs. Corn

Mr Corn and I met at work three years ago. I was temping for his boss at the time. Everyone on my boss’ team traveled extensively; I had emailed with most of them and I knew people’s names, but I didn’t know what anyone looked like. One day I found a CD with everyone’s head-shot on it, but even those pictures didn’t have names. Of the 15 people in the group whose picture were on the CD, only one of them looked younger than 45 and honestly, he looked a bit dorky.

A few weeks after I started with the firm, my boss asked me to invite the people on his team to a meeting. I sent out the invite and got 15 different responses back on why people couldn’t go. The last excuse I got was from Mr. Corn saying that he had jury duty. I almost sent back a snarky email jokingly asking him if that was the best he could come up with, but I remember at the time I was trying to be as professional as possible.

The day of the meeting came and Mr. Corn showed up at my desk to say he had been released from jury duty. I looked up from what I was doing, realized for the first time that he was the guy with the dorky picture on the CD and I immediately thought to myself, ‘wow, good for him he looks better than his picture!’. Mr Corn joked with me about how since he was released from duty he was trying to find something to occupy his time. Somehow, I roped him into clearing out a cube across from mine that was filled with old papers and collateral. He stayed for over an hour and we flirted and joked the entire time.

I remember thinking how weird it was that I was flirting with a guy at work, and I quickly put it out of my mind…until the next morning when he came to my desk to ‘check on the cube’. I knew something was up. We chatted it up a bit more that morning and not long after he left my desk I got an email from him asking me out for drinks that night. Of course, I had to call/email everyone I knew and come up with an appropriately ‘breezy’ answer.

Apparently he had left his desk to go to a meeting and didn’t get my answer for hours, because that afternoon I got a response to my email joking that I really knew how to make a guy sweat it out. I quipped that there were rules about how long I needed to take to respond and he swore he had never heard of such a thing.

Mr. Corn picked me up at my cube at 5:30 that night and we went to a local bar. It was the best. first. date. ever. We talked for hours. By the end of the night, we were tentatively holding hands and every time I felt his warm skin on mine I felt tingles all over my body. We joked about how just like I had made him wait to get my answer on whether I would go out with him, he now had to wait the obligatory three days to call me.

As the night drew to an end, Mr. Corn walked with me to the subway stop. As we were walking, he asked me if he could kiss me and I said I didn’t think it was a good idea…it was our first date and all, but halfway to the subway, I paused on the sidewalk we leaned in and had our first kiss.

Fireworks, tingling sensations, a warm flutter in my stomach - sheer joy tumbled through my body as we kissed. He brought his hand to my waist and pulled me in deeper and I lost all sense of time. We eventually started walking again toward the station, holding hands, quietly thinking about how great the night had been. Mr. Corn waited with me for my train and kissed me quickly as I got in the car.

When I got home I noticed I had a message on my cell phone. It was from Mr Corn saying that he knew he was breaking some sort of rule, but he had to call and tell me what a great time he had had, and that he was really looking forward to seeing me again sometime soon.

That was three years and one month ago today and I remember it like it was yesterday.

How about you? How did you meet?

What a sweet story!

As for me, we met in elementary school and re-met again in college! We are even class picture neighbors in our 4th grade class picture! At the time, he was my boy nemesis ;)

Mrs Bee - no way! That’s awesome. Chris and I actually met online as well, on Lavalife. Some might think that’s not so romantic, but I used to be super shy and found it easier to warm up to meeting people in person if I met them first through the computer. When I stumbled upon Chris’ profile, I knew there was something different and special about him and I just *had* to talk to him. I was finishing up my last semester several provinces away at the time, so we spent three months chatting till all hours of the night and our first date was the day after I flew back to town. We had a fabulous first date as well with great conversation, and that was that. Been together ever since.

That’s so darn cute. I love workplace romances. Mrs. Bee and Mr. Bee = love at first site. I slay me.

I met Mr. Lovebug in a bar. So romantic. Although, actually, it was pretty intense…

My bf and I met at a scholorship interview weekend…what dorks. He has a rather unusual (Dutch, maybe?) last name, and looks a heck of a lot like his older brother who I already knew. The poor guy was standing by himself in the middle of the gym so I walked up to him and said, “Hey, you’re a (insert last name here), aren’t you?” Yeah, I’m smooth.

Another internet romance here. :-)

We met in a Washington DC chat room. I was at school in Philly, homesick for DC, and he was in Seattle, considering med school here and looking for info. We hit it off and were just online friends for about 6 years off and on. ‘Off’ when he was being a jerk to hide the fact that he was convinced he was in love with me, haha.

We had a huge falling out over something stupid and I gave him the riot act and thought that was that, but he continued to read my blog and when he saw my sole public entry a LONG time later about my Worst Week Ever (grandmother died, had an ugly breakup far from home, found out my job is being moved two hours away), he sent me an email just to say, “hey, sorry to hear about all this.” We started talking again, and within 6 months, he had moved 3000 miles to see if we would work.

Looks like we do. :-)

My fiance and I met in january of 2002 both working at a record store. He had a girlfriend, but thought I was cute and developed a strong crush on me over the next 3 years. He asked me out for drinks in May of 2005 when we were both newly single after tumultuous long term relationships, both of us intending it to be platonic, as we were close friends. However, I had a revelation of “this person is perfect for me” and apparently he had it too.

Awesome story, Miss Corn!

We met while I was studying abroad in Spain (he’s Spanish). I flew over here for my semester abroad looking for a good time and walked away with the love of my life! Best decision I ever made. :)

Wow, you really know how to write a good story! It made my morning!

I also had a workplace romance. It was exciting and romantic with a hint of naughtiness to it because no one could know.

Miss Corn, did you and FI have to keep your office romance a secret?

Miss Corn, your sweet story is so well written I could feel the excitement and nervous energy!

My FI and I were set up by friends while we lived in different cities. The first time we met we didn’t like each other (I knew about the setup and he didn’t). We met a second time at their wedding and felt the hum and crackle of love at a family barbeque of all places. Our first four dates were in four different cities and for our fifth date he flew to meet me in New Zealand for work. It was magic.

That’s a great story of your first date. It was as if I was there watching the whole time.

My FI and I met on a blind date. My co-worker set me up with her boyfriend’s best friend. Unfortunately, I met him two weeks before he was moving to a different state. We tried the long distance thing for a few months but it just wasn’t working. Three years later, we met up again at the same co-worker and boyfriends wedding. Nine months later I moved to Oregon to be with him. Seven years later we are planning our wedding.

Hey Farmgal,

We were very quiet about the whole thing for a few months, and then we told our boss. He aws ecstatic! No one else knew for at least a year after that. The funny part was all the damage control we had to do after people were finding out a year later…everyone was like ‘whisper, whisper’ and we were like ‘we’ve met each other’s parents and spent holidays with family…there is nothing scandalous here’!

Also, Mr Corn was so over-the-top professional with me at work that people thought he was always a jerk to me and couldn’t figure out why I liked him. :)

I LOVE LOVE LOVE all your stories, keep them coming!
