Wedding Presents For The Groom??

June 18th, 2007 @ 4:16 pm by Mrs. Plum

Huh? I am such a nerd!  My FI called me today and giddily told me that he had bought my wedding present today when he was shopping with his parents.

He told me “Honey! I got your wedding present today, I think you’ll reallyyyy like it!”

Me: WAIT! DONT TELL ME! I want to be surprised!

Him: Ok

Me: Well…. I kind of want to know, but then I don’t. Just tell my sister what you got me Wedding Presents For The Groom?? : wedding gifts Silly1 silly

Him: Ok, well I spent a lot more than I wanted to, but it’s ok because you’re my wife. I guess I should get used to that.

LOL. Isn’t he the cutest? I just LOVE the way that sounds - “wife”.  ANYWAYS - He then asked me what I got HIM for a wedding present.

Me: Uhhhh……Wedding Presents For The Groom?? : wedding gifts Confuse confuse

I completely forgot that I had to get the Hubs a present -

Me: Uhhhh - it’s a surprise?

Good thing he’s been hinting at something or else I would’ve been completely screwed.

Thank goodness FI has a close friend who is a watch fiend (he literally has hundreds of REALLY nice watches)- he’s getting me a FAT discount from his retailer friends.
Woo-hoo for hookups.

Yeah yeah yeah, the whole thing about Chinese culture thinking that giving watches/timepieces as presents = bad luck. I am not Chinese, although my FI is PART Chinese - I’m fairly certain his family doesnt believe in it either.

Let’s hope not.

Nice watch Miss Plum! Don’t worry about the Chinese superstition - i’ve never it only applies to “clocks” and not “watches.” So, you’re completely safe :)

my friend goes by the chinese tradition and she told her husband to give her a penny for the watch, she said its a loop hole.

ha same as tassamai, only for knives. my aunt gave us a set of knives which we were totally confused about b/c of the superstition, so my other aunt “fixed” it by sticking a penny in the box. once i got my chinese best friend a clock and my mom yelled at me. thanks to our culture we also cannot have white paper lanterns, 4 of any part of the bridal party (or 14 people total), 4 centerpiece votives, 4 bamboo stalks in the centerpieces. but at least i convinced my mom to let me have a non-bright red cheongsam. my white husband-to-be thinks we’re nuts.

if it helps - its customary (atleast from what ive been told) for the korean bride to present her husband w/ a super nice watch. so thar goes superstition… =)

i’m chinese…but i think getting a watch for someone is fine…i think it’s that you’re not supposed to get them a clock…i think that’s the superstition

you can go around it by asking him to give you $1 before handing him the watch. that’s what i did w/ my mom. and that’s what my aunt did when she gave my grandma a nice set of knife.

whoa, my mom didn’t tell me about giving the groom a watch! i’m gonna have to ask her about that. she has told me about giving her a penny for the knives though. maybe you can do that for mr. plum. you’ll have a good laugh at least!

I second Didi. The Chinese tradition only applies to clocks, not watches!

I agree with HL and tracy.. the superstition only applies to clocks. My friend (Chinese) and her husband (Cantonese) both received a super nice watch as one of the many wedding presents.

Very nice watch miss plum :-).

Someone thought I said I got my DH a Rolodex for a wedding gift; I didn’t bother correcting.

ahah mrs. bee - i know that superstition. although the version my so gave me is that the guy is not supposed to gift the girl with shoes, not the other way around. this stems from the guys going to goondae for so many years - saying goes if you give them shoes, they will “wear them backwards” while you’re gone in the army…

hence, ive bought shoes for him, but he still hasnt bought any shoes for me! i guess he lucked out with that one…

Thanks so much guys for clearing up this superstition about the watch. I want to get one for my h2b and the only thing stopping me was the thought of it being unlucky but I’m happy now that it’s not…

Just have to pick one now as we’re getting married in less than 2 weeks :)

How much of my wedding budget should I spend on my future husband’s gift? I’ve been drooling over a Patek Philippe watch for years and would love to give my fiance a beautiful watch as an engagement/wedding gift, but now that the day is arriving, I’m a little nervous/anxious about dropping $30k (1/2 of my wedding budget) on a watch. Makes me really think what men have to go through when they buy the engagement ring! Thoughts?
