About Beehive

Beehive

June 19th, 2007 @ 4:20 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. K is desperate to find about 125 bird silhouette die-cuts, preferrably on blue paper.  Can anyone suggest an online vendor or a store in San Diego?
  2. lily and her fiance are hosting a chocolate fountain and hors d’oeuvres hour instead of a full cocktail hour.  They’ll be serving red wine and would like to serve a cordial as well; can anyone recommend an appropriate one?  (Her guest are mostly Chinese, if that helps.)
  3. Stephanie from LA is looking for a choir to book for her reception (and to find out how much she should expect to pay for it.)  She’d also like to know how much she should expect to pay for a lighting designer.  Her venue has pin spots for the tables and her florist is bringing about 15 uplights; how much more will she need?
  4. Samantha from Charlotte is looking for shoes for her bridesmaids (preferably with a low, 1 1/2 inch heel).  Most of the salons near her don’t carry what she’d like: a mule without ankle straps or closed toes.  Can anyone suggest an online retailer or shop near her?
  5. Crimonsky’s ceremony is in one state and her reception is in another (she lives on a border); which location should she put on the STDs for her oversea guests?
  6. Aliya would like to find personalized steak brands (with initials) for 11 male members of her wedding.  Has anyone else done this?  Can anyone recommend a retailer?
  7. its_v would like suggestions for BM gifts.

Aliya - we’re thinking about doing the same thing for the guys. :) My dad has one from Williams-Sonoma that he loves. I’m not sure what the price is, but they’re really good quality. Hope that helps!

Samantha- one word of advice on mules- I would be really careful they don’t make flip flop noises as your bridesmaids walk- I’ve run into that problem before. Have you tried Piperlime.com yet? It is run by the GAP compaines but it has lots of brands of shoes and has been a great resource for me.

Ps. I’m in Charlotte too!

Crimonsky- Same situation here. I put both on the Save the Dates. I just said, “Ceremony to be held at XYZ, Place, ST” and “Reception to be held at ZYX, Place, ST” If you know, why not just say it was my thought! My overseas person (yeah, it’s only one) and out of staters loved it. People went online and looked up the places!

I don’t have any suggestion other than this: Samantha from Charlotte should let her bridesmaids wear whatever they want on their feet, and not find a specific shoe for all of them. They aren’t robots, they’re her bridesmaids. For heaven’s sake…

That said, I’ve found most of my dressy shoe choices for my wedding at DSW thus far. Maybe she and her bridesmaids could check there? (The reason I have 3 pairs is because I wasn’t sure of the color that would match at first, so I bought two different cute mules to try with it. One worked better than the other, but now I’ve decided I’d be more comfy in a strappy heel on the day of my wedding instead. Mules are fine if I’m only wearing them for a couple of hours at the most. But for long-term wear, my feet personally prefer a strap around the ankle to help keep ‘em on my feet.)

Just my two cents…

Crimonsky–the ceremony is the important part. Unless you’re inviting some people only to the reception, list the state of the wedding.

Aliya–oddly enough, I just saw personalized steak brands on the Stupid Wedding Crap blog. Apparently Gifts.com sells them.

Aliya: We purchased our brand (a big D) in Wall, South Dakota. I am not sure if they have a website (or if you are near Wall Drug–highly doubt it!) but it’s worth a try. They were around $10 each… and very fun!!

Shoes-
Zappos.com is awesome. FREE shipping both ways, so if something doesn’t fit, you can return them and exchange them for another size. They have a bazillion shoes to chose from. Happy shopping.

if you’re interested in wrislets too, check out. http://www.jonasbag.etsy.com

Samantha - mules are, pretty much by definition, closed-toe. You probably want to look for ’slide’ style dress sandals. On Zappos you can search by shoe type and heel height; that may be a good place to start. Try this: http://www.zappos.com/n/es/d/722000234/heel_height/3/show_all/1/page/1.html

And see if anything looks good to you.

Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor Loft also often have this type of shoe (e.g. http://www.anntaylor.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=8605&N=1200124&pCategoryId=191&categoryId=903&Ns=CATEGORY_SEQ_903&defaultColorNameFromCategory=Brown&defaultSizeTypeFromCategory=Misses)

I bought each of my bridesmaids a “little miss” shirt that most closely matches their personaility (i.e. little miss giggles, little miss sunshine, little miss trouble, little miss bad, and little miss fun). I also bought them each a cute clutch purse.

k - you might consider searching for a teacher/education store in your area. lots of them have die-cut machines that you can use for a small price or even free!

Thanks Amy and Amie! I was worried about the flipflop noise too but all the girls were really asking that they not have a strap, so oh well - maybe the Quartet will be really loud (haha). BTW, we’re getting married at Daniel Stowe (www.dsbg.com) on 7/14/07 - only a few weeks away now! What about you?

Oh Samantha I am so envious! We looked at DSBG almost a year a head of time and they were all booked for every Saturday so I gave up on the dream. You will have a beautiful wedding! We ended up deciding on a historic home with formal gardens in my hometown in TN so it all worked out for the best and my mom is estatic that it is local for her. Good luck as the countdown draws closer! I’m 8/25 so I’ve still got a little bit before crunch time.

well K - you are not going to like this (don’t get jealous girls) - my maid of honor is the head of wholesale at Paper Source - I asked her about the die cut birds - she said she didn’t know (and she KNOWS these things), but maybe the best way would be to get some bluebell paper and bust it out DIY style…125, won’t take you TOO long…maybe go to Michaels, get a woodcut bird you like, have your fiance outline them on paper and start cutting? You could have it done in 2 nights with the TV on.

Try Smashbox primer - you can get samples and small sizes too - was originally for the movies so it should do the trick…

Thanks

K - not sure exactly what “die cut” is — but can you DIY with a craft punch? I found a “humming bird” silhouette here that is between 2.25 and 2.5″: http://www.1stopsquare.com/bradling.html

or here’s a punch for a dove that is a bit smaller: http://www.scrapstop.com/shop.php?op=itemdetails&item=12128

here’s a 1/2″ dove paper punch:

I was wondering, what’s the difference between a bridal shower, a bachelorette party and a hen’s night?

Haha, just a bit confused :)

Question for the hive: I am having invitations printed on heavy cardstock by a printer, but I would like to apply a colored or gold edging myself (which is not offered by the printer). Does anyone know how to do this? I.e., what type of paint to use, how to apply it? It seems like it should be pretty easy, but I don’t want to ruin my printed invitations!

Hi weddingbee. I need help in finding (to purchase) an affordable cake plate 18″ or 20″ in diameter. It can even be a square 18″X18″. Since we are on a budget, I’m using the cake plate to boost some height for our 3-layer cake. If it’s not a plate, does anyone have any idea of what else to use as an alternative of the cake plate?

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

TheMDBride, I’ve seen people use thick pieces of wood with fabric or sugar icing on top and wide ribbon around the edges. You can even make the frosting yourself with powdered sugar, water, and food coloring.

I hope Miss Popcorn reads this :) I’ve been trying to e-mail you at your Craigslist e-mail regarding a Cheongsam Seamstress in Toronto, but I’m not sure it’s getting through. Is there another way i can reach you? Thanks.

Stephanie– Try a local university or college, or in Orange County, there is a fabulous performing arts magnet HS, and ask for the Glee Club or Chamber Singers (usually there’s a smaller, 20-40 person, ensemble). When I was in college, our Glee Club performed at a wedding for $1000. The bride was an alum, and gave that much as a donation, but we would have done it for half as much.

Search online for “footed cake plate/platter” or “pedestal cake platter”

For the BeeHive–

What are people’s opinions on a head table vs. sweetheart table for the reception? We have a relatively small bridal party (3 attendants on each side, for a total of 6) - 3 of whom have very serious (live-in) significant others. We want the bridal party to be able to sit with their significant others if possible, because the SOs would feel uncomfortable sitting on their own.
Is it ok to have a sweetheart table, then have an “honor” table with the attendants and their SOs?

I bought my shoes from shoebuy.com. They have great prices, a search by heel height tool and free return shipping for shoes that you don’t like/fit.

For the Hive -
What type of paper weight is best for programs composed of two folded sheets (i.e. eight printable pages including front and back covers)? I love the stardream and luxe papers I have seen people use but I am afraid that, once folded, the paper will be too stiff and be able to open up enough for easy reading. If it helps, we are probably going to tie with ribbon. Thanks so much!!

also, the paper would be preferably inkjet-compatible.

Amanda~
That is very similar to what my new husband and I did. We had a large (6 on each side) bridal party, almost all of which have long-term SO (including 3 that are engaged). We had a sweetheart table for the 2 of us, then 2 tables for the bridal party- 1 for the groomsmen and their dates and 1 for the bridesmaids and their dates. For the most part, the bridal party loved it (with the exception of 1 or 2 people). It made the attendants and their guests feel comfortable because they were able to sit together, and if we hadn’t done it that way, there would be numerous guests that didn’t know ANYone else, minus their date and us. Good luck!

I forgot to mention (whether this of any interest or not, I don’t know)… We used the bridesmaids bouquets as the centerpieces for the bridal party tables- 3 on each table. 1) It was something to do with the bouquets and looked really pretty, and 2) it set their tables apart just a little, to show that they were special.

E's girl

iloveham - i engraved myhusband’s with “May we dance to a song that never ends.” since we are big dancer’s and that’s how we met…consider how you met and see if you can make something up that way. I got that line from my husband (he was my fiance at the time) when I randomly asked him to sum up our relationship in a phrase….and that’s what he said..it sounded nice. Or perhaps write something you are known for saying all the time…we eventually used that same saying on his wedding ring that said ” May 19, 2007 we dance…” Of course, that was our wedding day. Hope this helps! :-)

Re,

I haven’t used the stuff, but if you google “model in a bottle” you will find a spray that supposedly seals in your makeup. I think it’s kind of like waterproofing your face — but not as gross as that sounds.

we got our BM ipod shuffles…. We only have 3 or them to get for and thought it was something they could all use. Plus we were able to engrave them individually for free. :)
