Must Take Pictures

June 19th, 2007 @ 3:22 pm by Mrs. Raspberry

I have been collecting all my favorite pictures from other people’s weddings since I started the wedding planning process, and am finally getting the list together for the photographer.  Here are a few of my favorites (I am a bit obsessed with feet and shoes).

(Please let me know if one of these is yours… I was collecting them so long ago, I didn’t keep track of where they came from.)

Suggestion: Show this collage to your photographer to give a “flavor” of what you are envisioning them to capture. A good photographer’s eye catches so many things at the moment, so it’s hard to know what your fave pics will be. A lot depends on expression, pose, lighting, camera angle & exposure — stuff you can’t predict or control. So don’t sweat it TOO much. : )

This is a peeve of mine. You hired your photographer, I assume, because you like his/her style. By all means share shots you like, but don’t make them “must” take shots. You may stress the photographer out forcing set-up/artificial situations to photograph. Let the day happen and let your photographer capture things as they unfold.

I love the picture of just her feet. I have the one and only one forced spontaneous picture I would like taken. It’s with the doors open and the two of us gazing into each others eyes. And I want it in black and white. But other than that I think we can go with the flow.
I disagree with HC. I hired my photographer because yes, I like his style but I am paying him to capture the wedding as I would like. After all isn’t that why photographers meet with the couple. To get an idea of style bride and groom would like. I think if you have a good photographer everyone should be happy with the final outcome of the pictures.

To clarify - I do not intend to give these photographs to my photographer and tell them they absolutely must capture these exact images. The photographer actually asked me to put together a list of the photographs that I wanted them to try and catch as they want to make sure I get all the shots I want.

I agree with HC - the pictures that you are showing - those are their moments - and that cute quirky one with the brides feet - it is so perfect bc you can tell that it was totally spontaneous and maybe she was a little off balance and the photog captured that very moment. If you try to re-create it may look forced. I guanrantee that if you let your photog do his/her job - your own photos will become your “must list.” (and chances are end up on another bride’s must take list!) Im sure your photos will be beautiful!

I agree with HC as well. Put a collage together for your photographer, so he or she can see what kind of imagery you like. As a photographer myself it’s really hard to recreate those exact images because they are spontaneous. Our job is to put you into situtations that will cause spontaneous moments such as “dance with your new wife” or “whisper something into your husbands ear”. When you force a photograph it never looks as good as the original. Your photographer will appreciate the collage though :)

ditto HC. as inspiration, great. but i also think it’s odd when a photographer asks their couple to send them photos of styles and shots they like. didn’t you hire the photographer b/c you assume that they have a style of their own that you liked enough to record your wedding?

Again, to clarify, yes, I hired my photographers because of their styles. We also are spending a crapload of money on them and they want to make sure we are happy - which I totally appreciate! These pictures for them are more just to give them ideas of the types of photojournalistic shots we like.

I think it is totally acceptable and actually helpful for them to know what my likes are.

I think the must take list is a good idea. Maybe not as specific as some of these, but if there are any special moments that you want to capture. We do not have one single photo of us exchanging rings. I liked our photog and the pictures were great, but was truly disappointed to not have any shots of that.

though her pictures were absolutely stunning, i believe it was mrs. ant who lamented that she didn’t have any full-length shots of her in her wedding dress. while i don’t think pictures have to be “staged”, asking your photog to capture specific moments isn’t necessarily going against their “style.”

i think it’s a good idea to show photographers what you’re looking for, and they can interpret it with their creative eye.

mr. and miss raspberry are a cute couple anyway so i’m sure their pics will turn out great. :)

Is it only me that is creeped out by guys kissing their significant others on the forehead? My fi did that once and I told him he wasn’t my dad. It just seems moist and patronizing to me.

But I see that photo a lot on people’s favorite shot list, so I wonder if its just me?

I would think any good photographer would understand, when presented with these photos, what Miss Raspberry is after. She’s clearly defining a certain style for her/him to follow, and I’m sure she/he will appreciate the input.

oh, i totally think it’s a good idea to show your photographer the look and styles you want…you definitely won’t get exact shots, but every bride is different and it gives the photographer an idea of what you like most….and s/he can do what s/he does best and capture it in his or her own way. i see nothing wrong with giving your photographer a sampling of shots you like. you choose a photographer b/c you like his or her style and trust him/her to capture what you want most. showing a few for shouldn’t stiffle a photographer - it should give inspiration or at least give ideas of what the photographer can try to capture to make you happy. :)

yeahp, our photographers wanted us to pool a collage of pics as well..i think they wanted to see what kind of pics we especially enjoyed.
i love this post!! everyone has their own set of “must take pics” and always wanted to see what others have saved…we should all share our own images we’ve saved along the way~ ;)

As I was looking through the hundreds of photographers out there my first rule was if I saw a photo in any sample album of a bride who had her veil draped over her groom’s head then that photographer was not for me. I think that’s the most overdone shot out there and I really wanted a photographer who wasn’t into copying the “must take” photos of other brides…I wanted him to capture our special moments. I think it’s fine to include a list saying “i really want a photo of me and my grandmother” or “make sure you get a full length of me in my dress” but otherwise I’d trust your photographer to give you your own special moments.

I like the idea of giving your photographer shots you like, so if they see those things they will be sure to take the shot, or one similar you would appreciate. Considering your paying for the service you should get what you want. CS I think you are the only one lol, I love when my FI kisses my forehead it’s our special thing.

I really like the shot of the bride laying on the bed, that would be a good one for you to have.

as a photographer, i’m totally okay with given a few “must have” pictures… but when it’s too much, it defeats the purpose.. i always ask the bride & groom if there are any pictures they want…
