Mrs. Kiwi, Los Angeles Age and Occupation in 06: 27, Bookkeeper Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, P.E. Teach/Coach @ private schools in LA Engagement Date: March 31, 2006 Wedding Date: November 3, 2007 Venue: Radisson Hotel About Me: I'm a bookkeeper who failed high school algebra. I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!

My Mom, The Bridezilla

June 19th, 2007 @ 12:40 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

It’s funny, now that my mom has cable, she has begun an addiction to Bridezillas. At first, it was a novelty, she really enjoyed insulting the various brats and bitches - but now it’s personal. I love my mom, but every now and then she gets into the “slang” and will ask me, “What are you and your friends doing today? Just kickin’ it?” I swear, she really does say that.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. My mom has yet to look for her dress for the wedding. She is staying with my aunt this week with the intention of getting her dress. Plans have changed now that my cousin (aunt’s grandchild) was dropped off to spend the week. My cousin doesn’t like to shop, so my mom said she’ll have to put off shopping for a couple of weeks. Since this is the third time she’s put this off for a “couple of weeks”, I explained to her that she has “Four months and 16 days to get the dress, and what if you need alterations??!?!”

My mother, caring soul that she is said, “Ooooh, we have us a BRIDEZILLA.” Then she proceeded to tell me all about how she’s going to change outfits after the ceremony, and into a suit for the reception. All I had to say was, “And you called ME a bridezilla?”

Since she’s been watching “Whose Wedding is it Anyway?”, “Platinum Weddings”, “Bridezillas” and “Real Weddings from The Knot”, she’s been getting some ideas. Two outfits? Personalized jewelry… who knows what’s next?

How excited is your mom compared to you?

I think she sensed that if she was going to get all giddy and bossy, she was going to have to start paying for stuff…. so she kept it restrained.

My mom is pretty excited. She bought…I don’t know how many MOB dresses, but there were a few. I told her I trusted her to dress herself, but she wanted me to choose one of them for the wedding and then I think she felt better.

The only cringeworthy thing has been when she insisted that we needed to go underwear shopping. I think she felt a little sad that nobody did that for her, but she was 18 and I am almost 28! I just hold my tongue and let her enjoy it. :-)

I’m really lucky that my mom has always been excited, but I have to admit we had a tough time communicating back and forth at first because she had a lot of expectations that scared me (like she didn’t understand hiring a photojournalist, imagined engraved Crane’s invitations, etc.). We actually started a little blog together to share ideas since we are planning long distance, and she just wrote a post about shopping for mother-of-the-bride dresses- I’m really proud of how well she did on her own once I let her do her thing!

My mom is excited for me but she’s not thrilled about having to drive 4 hours away for our wedding. She DID get her outfit (I planned a day where we went together to pick it out and she lucked out at Lord and Taylor). Then she said she wanted “kitten heels” for shoes. I laughed at that one…then I taught her a new one. My mom has kitten-heeled peep-toe shoes just like I do for the wedding (different brands/ colors of course). Now she tells people she’s got peep toes and explains it to them.

My mom is still deciding between a “couple” of dresses…my wedding is 17 days away. So, yeah, I feel your pain.

But whatever, she’s just “kickin’ it!” ;) HA HA!

Greer–totally loving the mom/daugther blog. Great ideas, new pictures, and what a great bonding experience that must be.

My mom didn’t start shopping for dresses until about three weeks before the wedding. I figured that she had been dressing herself for a very long time, I wasn’t going to tell her what to wear. And she did find a very flattering dress at Nordstrom! She looks great in the photos, and I know she felt good on the day. And she had a wonderful time planning my shower. She did lovely centerpieces of roses with butterflies, and even made two favors, which I told her made me look bad, as I was doing donation favors. But she had fun. And she made our amazing tiered cheesecake wedding cake. We got so many compliments on that cake, both for how beautiful it was, and for how great it tasted. Thanks, Mom!

OK this isn’t about my mom but the show. I just found it on on demand too! I was watching the episode with the cheerleading coach who made her bridesmaids work out and go on diets. Crazy!

It is sad, but I secretly watch them while FI is doing his homework.

Both my mom and his mom are momzellias. I had enough with my mom that I blurted out, “here is a stack of invitations, do whatever you want with it and leave me alone.”

We got engaged on a Friday while away for a long weekend. I called my mom that day to announce our great news. Since my mom is a shopaholic, during her usual Saturday morning spree (the very next day!), my mom bought a dress! Eventually, she told me she had already bought a dress and was just waiting to see what I chose for mine and bridesmaids to see if she could keep it.

My mom, actually, isn’t that excited. She asked why we weren’t eloping. It’s not that she isn’t happy for us. She’s just jaded about marriage and thinks weddings cost too much money. (She’s not contributing monitarily to ours because she doesn’t make that much money, and we aren’t asking our families for financial assistance.) I’ve done a lot of location scouting with my future mother-in-law, and it’s been fun. As for dress shopping, I’m not sure what to do. My mother lives several hours away, and I’m not quite comfortable dress shopping with my husband-apparent’s mother.

My mom is not interested in my wedding at ALL. She figures “I’ve already had my wedding — do what you want with yours.”

*sigh — Is it wrong that I’m secretly wishing that she’d meddle in my wedding business just a little bit?

Em, I don’t think it’s wrong at all. My own mom started out with the same opinion I had on everything. I mean, if I said, “I like this, but it’s too yellow”, she’d say, “Yeah, I like it, but I think it’s too much yellow”. That drove me crazy, I wanted HER opinion, not a repeat of mine!

Mom relations have actually been the most stressful part of planning so far, which was surprising to me because we have a good relationship. She has said negative things that have made me upset, and she gets upset about offhand comments I have made. It has pretty much led to one of us getting upset every time the wedding comes up, so I’ve started trying to avoid it as a topic of conversation altogether.

My mom’s wedding outfit costs more than my wedding gown. Her choeng sam does too :P but they’re both entirely appropriate, and she’s not trying to outshine me. I just think the numbers are funny.
