A Whole Blog of Help

June 20th, 2007 @ 12:05 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

Lately there have been two things on my mind: my mom’s dress, and my own. Here are the reasons: my mom and I are both five feet tall or below (she says she’s shrinking, I say she’s just short) and need dresses that are made for petites. This is easy to find in dresses nowadays, right?

Well, I forgot to request a petite gown. stunned So, when I ordered at the end of January, they ordered me a dress that’s about 9 inches too long. I honestly don’t really care that much about the length, they can easily take it up.  But what about my bodice? I emailed my salon about changing my order five months later (yes, I apparently think I’m a magician), and the response was, “Sorry, your dress is being made (yay!) and cannot be changed, but we think it should be fine, not everyone is 5’9″. The dress should be altered easily.” Well, I can understand what they are saying, but what 5-footer has the same torso length as a gal who is 5’9″? Normally I wouldn’t worry, but my bodice is heavily beaded. I guess I’ll see when my dress comes in.

My mom, on the other hand, is a slim munchkin (and I loves her for it!) who will fit perfectly in petite sizes. As I was fretting about her size, I came upon a comment in one of my posts. The comment was from Greer, who is planning a wedding long-distance with her mom, and to aid the planning, they have begun a shared blog detailing Greer’s wedding, called “Faye and Greer” updated daily by both mother and daughter.

Could this have been a better idea? A shared blog with your mom. Unfortunately for me, my mom isn’t so much a writer, otherwise I totally would have had her blog with me. Anyway, I’m rambling. So, I came upon a post by Faye, Greer’s mom, about shopping for petite mother-of-the-bride dresses. This woman is hilarious, having two rules given by Greer: 1.) The MOB will not clash with the wedding colors or embarrass the bride (no frumpiness and no Talbots!) and 2.) Avoid all black and all white.

I learned about a few places to look: Nordstrom, Ann Taylor, J. Crew… and things not to do, “No bare shoulders!” I’ll let you find out where she got her dress from, but let me say, I’ve ordered a catalog for my own mom!

Thanks Faye and Greer! I’m sending the website to my own mom!

Great blog - I have to admit I started reading the entry because I was curious about the “no Talbots” rule. Their petite clothing line is one of the few that always fits me perfectly, and I would definitely not consider myself to be frumpy. I was pleased with the outcome of the blog entry.

Thanks Miss Kiwi- glad you liked Faye’s adventures in mother-of-the-bride shopping! To HC, I have totally reversed my opinion of Talbots- I always associated it with themed christmas sweaters that an older aunt bought me from there in the 90’s- I never thought they would have such modern clothes and totally elegant evening wear until my mom showed me. I just had a wrong impression of that store so I admit I was definitely closed-minded and had a little bridezilla moment :)
