Day After Shoots

“Day After Shoots,” or bridal sessions, have started to pick up popularity across the country.  Known for some of their crazier options (like a “trash the dress” session), but popular because of the many advantages they offer.  Here are several advantages which have spiked their popularity:

- The shoot allows the bride and groom to get the beautiful portraits they want without taking too much away from the wedding day.  I know for me it’s important to know that the bride and groom enjoy their wedding, and that the guests enjoy it as well.  None of us want wedding guests wandering around the cocktail hour looking at their watches, wondering what is going on.  We also want beautiful portraits that look like they should be in a magazine.  By allowing another day for the fun portraits, this balance is made much easier.

- A main staple of my style is the fun, relaxed portraits I like to get of the bride and groom.  With so much going on and so many people trying to get the attention of the bride and groom all day (you married ladies know what I’m talking about) it can be challenging for some people to really relax, let go, and show their excitement in the portraits.  It’s just human nature.  Obviously after the wedding day, the pressure and stress level is totally gone (well, at least from the wedding!), and it shows in the portraits.

- The shoot after the wedding allows for different locations and/or styles.  Many people want some additional images from maybe their hometown, or in a special vineyard, or maybe they just want something different with their hair, etc.  Have fun with it and enjoy it!

Below are some more photos from a sample Day After shoot.  Nicole and Scott live and met in NYC but since Nicole is originally from Upstate NY, they decided to get married back home near Nicole’s family.  The wedding had a slightly more traditional flavor to it…think historic Cathedral, extremely long veil, Rolls Royce, etc.

For the Day After Shoot we wanted to do something a little different.  We did the shoot in Manhattan to reflect their NYC lives, and also brought in a couple different elements, like some funky, unique veils.  We were able to get some beautiful shots reflecting their love for the city, and reflecting more of their personalities.

Great idea! Or if there’s not time day-after, I guess it could be scheduled post-honeymoon, or whenever.

That is a great idea! Do most brides get their hair and makeup done the day after as well?

Mr. Lovebug and I are definitely considering this. Love the idea of running around the city with nothing but time, our imaginations, and a camera…

It’s a great idea especially for couples that don’t want to see each other before the ceremony. There’s usually not enought time between the ceremony and reception to take a lot of pictures, so this option let’s you have your cake and eat it too :)

Interesting point about hair/makeup… I think it might be fun to have a less formal hair/makeup style for day-after photos…. not quite “trash the dress” but more relaxed/artistic, maybe more romantic to have loose hair, more smudgy eyes, etc. DH could loosen tie, remove jacket, roll up the sleeves, tousle the hair. Sort of a “partied and made love all night” look (but without the unrested puffy bloodshot eyes).

It can definitely be scheduled post-honeymoon, and in fact I think most people do that. I believe the name “day after shoot” came from the fact that it’s extremely popular to do this the day after the wedding in destination weddings before the photographer flys back. It allows the photographer and couple to really take advantage of the beautiful environment and get away from the ceremony/reception area to explore and create some funky stuff.

In more traditional weddings here in the states, like Nicole and Scott’s, I think most couples (photographers as well) would probably prefer to schedule it in whenever they get back.

And most of my clients do their own make up and get their hair done at the salon beforehand, but as Iris said do your own thing! Make it casual if you want or formal, it’s YOUR day after shoot so have fun with it and let loose.

Thanks everyone :)

it’s generally referred to as russian veiling for those of you interested. if you want a recommendation on finding something antique and retro id highly recommend checking out stephanie james couture - http://www.stephaniejamescouture.com/. she’s all the way over on the left coast, but she’s damn good.

also, haute bride - http://www.hautebride.com/ - makes some of my favorite stock hair jewelry. it’s pricey stuff but super swanky!

Although this is possibly an unpopular opinion, I think it’s a way for people to spend even *more* money on their wedding. At some point it just becomes excess.

We plan on doing this six wks after we return from our mini-moon, since our wedding is a DW. Since we won’t be able to bring our pup with us, we’ll take her with us - so we will have bridal shots with her in it!!

I think as long as the dress still fits…. you can do it any time, but I don’t think you would want to wait too long.
