Stop And Smell The Irises?

June 20th, 2007 @ 4:04 pm by Mrs. Butterscotch

I don’t have a favorite flower! So what was I to do when it came time to start thinking about flowers for this wedding? First thing to think about is the colors of the wedding. I love how gardenias smell but then I remembered that my groom, mom, and brother all have a pollen allergy. With a friend’s help, I explored ideas of non-floral bouquets and we did find a few. But they just didn’t speak to me. Now I was back at the drawing board and needed to think of some flower(s) that isn’t too fragrant and would work with my color scheme, and hopefully had some sort of sentimental meaning to me.

Ah ha, I got it! My grandma’s favorite flowers are irises, which would definitely bring out the lilac-ish color in my palette and aren’t too fragrant (nursery-grown ones don’t have a lot of smell) so that they shouldn’t bother anyone’s allergies. Personally, I love the white-on-white for bridal flowers, so I am carrying white irises with white roses to add some filler, and my bridesmaids will be carrying blueish lavender-colored iris bouquets.

How did you choose your flowers?

I just knew what color I wanted and the florist (friend) did the rest, picking what was fresh & in season. Everything turned out great. Admittedly, I was hugely low-maintenance on this task.

Ditto, I am doing my own flowers - mini spider gerbera daisies in pale pink and I would also like to have some hydrangeas if I can still get them (late August in NC anyone?)

I chose them because I had never seen the spider variety before and when I was doing research online I found them and they are awesome!

Be careful - Irises can fall apart if not super fresh. Usually you can cut them and they will open the next day but they are delicate - and beautiful. Just mentioning, used to work at a florist…

i’ve known forever that i wanted a traditional cascade bouquet in all white, just like the bouquets i loved when i was a little girl. i modernized it a bit by making it smaller and simpler with just roses and orchids. i absolutely loved it.

as for the BM bouquets, my wedding colors were white and champagne, with the BM dresses in champagne. since my husband’s favorite color has always been red, we did just plain red roses, no filler. it was a gorgeous splash next to my plain color scheme!

Hmm…haven’t decided yet. I might be super vanilla about it and stick with roses. Although god I’d love peonies…

So pretty. The Iris is my absolute favorite flower. They won’t be in my wedding though. We are sticking with local flowers so that there is no carbon cost in transporting them to our site and they do not grow there. If I were picking random flowers from a book I would pick what you are doing. Your bouquet is gorgeous.

Perfect choice. Love the look of those white irises in a bouquet.

I chose my bouquet kind of by accident. My friend and I were at a bridal show and I saw one on display in our wedding colors- blue and purple- which you almost NEVER see. It included blue hydrangea, cream roses, delphinium, and stock. I absolutely loved it, so I took a photo of it, but forgot to write down the florist. Months later I went to a florist appointment and showed the florist the photo I’d taken of the bouquet- and it was hers (how lucky was that?! I didn’t even know that she was at the show). The BMs bouquets were very similar (we like a lot of color), but also included some orchids for a different look.

i also have to second the risk of irises. make sure they are SUPER fresh because they do dry up or wilt pretty quickly out of water. i know this sounds crazy, but they’re pretty affordable so maybe you can make back-up bouquets held in water in case your first batch starts looking bad.

i’m choosing flowers based on the colors. i’m not really stuck on any particular flower, just as long as they’re all dark red… makes it easier that way. although i do really like orchids, but those will have to come in the white variety. the reds tend to run more on the violet/magenta side.

Thanks for the warning tips. My florist actually already thought of that. She is the greatest and she is throwing in an extra boutonniere for Mr Butterscotch to replace as the night goes on.

That first bouquet is in my clip art folder of wedding ideas– I think I stole it from the Knot or something!! That’s weird!

Our wedding will be black and white, and irises being my favorite flower….well, what other choice is there! Good tip about the extra boutoniere.
