About Beehive

Beehive

June 21st, 2007 @ 4:25 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. ot is thinking of wearing an all-black halter dress with a black sash along with red shoes and handbag to a wedding; would this be OK?
  2. Karen and her fiance would like suggestions for gifts for their groomsmen (no flasks, beer mugs, etc.)
  3. Lea needs suggestions for inexpensive but unique favors as well as BM gifts.
  4. Can someone recommend a day-of coordinator in the NY metro area for Jean?
  5. RL thinks she may have offended or angered one of her vendors (they had a misunderstanding about backing out); besides sending an email to smooth things over, is there anything she can do?
  6. An upscale bridal salon in JoJo’s town is having a sample sale.  But she’s worried that since the dresses are all size 12 (and she’s a size 0), the money she’d save would all be spent on massive alterations, anyway.  Is it worth it?  Can dresses even be downsized that much?
  7. Miss Melodious is considering wearing a birdcage veil over her face along with a cathedral veil (and no blusher).  Is this appropriate?
  8. Davis2B is looking for pictures of centerpieces that use curly willow or birch branches.  And can anyone recommend a place to buy them wholesale (or at least for a good price)?
  9. Can anyone tell Marla where to find these STDs/invitations
  10. Starjas would like to how to deal with “renegade” guest notes on the RSVP.  Should she inform her invitee that they cannot bring their “extra” guest?  Or just eat the cost and hope it balances out with non-attendees.

#1: Yes–red and black would be cute!
#2: Custom bobble head dolls. Flip flops with flask or bottle opened inside? Beer of the month club. Steak of the month club?

#3. Can’t go wrong with food. Chocolate covered pretzels in your wedding colors? It’s all in the cute packaging!! :) Bridemaid gifts..send them a survey of sorts of what their favorite color, movie, perfume is and get each girl something personal.

#5 Either let it go or follow up with a phone call. Be apologetic and reitterate that it was a midunderstanding and you are looking forward to working with them.

Karen - we gave our guys Leathermen - usually they are like $70 but we got them for only $30 by searching online.

Lea - we did all sorts of favors but since we were by the bay we gave out salt water taffy - got 200+ favors from a $40 box from candywarehouse.com and got small bas from uline - put a placecard over the top and staple/ribbon and you’ve got place cards and favors!

Davis2B Miss Corn just found a site - look in a few past blogs - Nedham or something.

Miss Melodious - it is YOUR day - appropriate is not a question when it comes to veils!

OT - you’ll be fabulous. the world is changing, black is no longer bad.

Starjas - I feel your pain - we’re dealing with the same thing - that and everyone ordering the most expensive entree - eek!

RL - flowers and treats, please and thank you solve all manner of problems.

1 (ot) I hear wearing black to a wedding is bad luck. Or something like that. Sounds cute, but I don’t know…

Karen, just do something that matches their personality. We got our BM a bunch of fishing equipment. You can still have the gifts somewhat match, like maybe a case of beer and magazine subscription for each, but have the mag be different topics based on what they like.

Starjas:
According to Carley on theknot (and I did this and it’s working!!):
(direct quoting)
Q. Is it considered tacky to write in the number of invited guests on the response card?

A. This tactic will let guests know that only the people to whom the invite is addressed are invited. It’s surprising how many guests feel free to bring children or other relatives you didn’t expressly invite. But there is a subtler way to do this: Write in the exact names of the people invited (just as you addressed them on the outer or inner envelope), and have them check “will attend” or “will not attend.” That way, it will be clear that “Mr. and Mrs. John Smith” or “John, Katherine, and Tommy Smith” are the people invited; all they need to do is note whether or not they’re coming.

Lea, for favors we did Tea Forte teas (http://www.teaforte.com/) and one pot coffee things from our local coffee shop, along with to-go boxes for any leftover cake. It was $150 for about 70 favors.

Miss Melodious — I’m having a hard time envisioning that. The veils in those styles I’ve seen are pretty distinct and wouldn’t seem to go together. Can you post a photo of what you have in mind? I think it might be hard to pull off successfully. But how about wearing cathedral veil for the ceremony and switching to the birdcage for reception so it’s easy to dance (though would be better if it’s just over the eyes and not the mouth to eat). Also the birdcage tends to go with a more 1940s/retro or else a super-modern look, whereas the cathedral is more a length than a style per se. So might depend a lot on your dress.

ot - I wore an outfit just like this to a wedding and managed to get a compliment from the bride! That was pretty sweet. She is a pretty funky gal and loves lots of color, so if your friend is more traditional, you may want to be sensitive to that.

We’re going to get Coach wallets for our groomsmen. They’re about $60 at the outlets

Starjas: My apologies. When I first read your question- I was thinking that you hadn’t sent the invites yet. If you’re already in the thick of it… it’s a tough one. If your budget allows you the expense- I would say- don’t say anything. If it’s looking like it’s going to be way too much- I would simply call them and explain that due to budgetary constraints you will only be able to have Mr. & Mrs. and not Johnny and Susie. Apologize and wait and see if they say that it will change their response. If they say nothing, then just ask if that will change their response.

#6- i’m pretty sure it would be very difficult to downsize a dress from size 12 to 0 without a) altering design and b) costing a fortune… my vote would be to try somewhere else.

Karen - what would you get these guys for their birthdays? You don’t have to get them all the same thing, so set a price range, and instead of looking for a “gift for a groomsman”, look for a gift for Mike, or Zed, or Ting.

ot — Black can be iffy. If the wedding or guests seem to be on the conservative side or it’s a morning event, maybe not. If I were a close friend/relative, I would not wear black so as to avoid making the misimpression that I disapproved of the marriage.

Also it helps if the dress style/cut is not too overly revealing/tight/sexy; that can be more of an issue than the color.

In Chinese culture, red is lucky, so could be a plus if it’s a Chinese wedding.

JoJo - are you a size 0 in street clothes, or have you been measured by a bridal salon and sized according to the chart from the designer of the dress you are looking at? maybe you already know this, but you will probably go a size or two up from your regular clothes size because bridal gowns are sized totally different. i wear a 4/6 in real life and fit fine into size 8 and 10 dresses. if you truly are a size 0 in a bridal gown, you must be tiny!!!!!

with that said, that would still be a huge alteration, but it wouldn’t hurt to go in and try on a dress you like, some dresses, like ones with corsets built in (like mine) may be somewhat altertable.

i wouldn’t get your heart set on anything, though, but that’s just my advice from my experience dress shopping!

Does anyone know of a good calligraphy class in NYC that is about $50? I was only able to find a few and they were all 150 or more.
Thanks.

Jojo…I sew, you will lose most, if not all of any detail. You really can’t size down a dress that much without making it look like crap. Have you considered just having it made? I chose a couture gown & had it made to my size. It looks exactly like the original, including fabric and details and was much cheaper.

M - try looking for the inscribe system - its not “real ” calligraphy persay, but it is a robotic arm - we got our stuff done for about half to cost of “real” calligraphy - pick the right font and no one can tell. If you want a class as at Kates Paperie or a Paper-Source store….
