DIY Thank You Cards

June 21st, 2007 @ 7:29 pm by Mrs. Tomato

I’ve been getting quite a few registry gifts lately, and I’m already having trouble keeping track of who gave us what, especially since some of our generous guests have sent us more than one gift! I decided that instead of waiting until after I get married to start on the thank you notes, perhaps I should start now. So in five minutes, I whipped up this:

thankyou

I took the butterflies and fonts (Zapfino and Felix Titling) from our wedding programs. I just wanted something simple but personalized, and lots of white space so we could write our thank you note.

After a few minutes of satisfied completion though, I realized maybe it was a little too girly for Mr. Tomato (we plan to split up the thank you notes so that he’s writing to his friends/family and I’m writing to mine). So I created this:

thankyou2

This took a bit longer, maybe 20 minutes. Since I’m a complete novice with Illustrator and can’t create elaborate designs from scratch (without spending hours and hours, which I don’t have), I decided to creatively incorporate symbols such as asterisks. I think the result was cutesy+funk.

Mr. Tomato likes it, but what do you guys think? Is the second design too weird?

I love them both! Maybe add one or 2 more of the asterisks in the bottom corner or top corner - a little grouping instead of solo. But I think the graphic design is great. How thoughtful of you to make a design just for him.

No, the second one isn’t weird at all. It’s v. cool! But that first one is so sweet…

I love the first one!

I like the first one better, I don’t think it’s that girly.

Can you print them both? If you have to choose only one, the second one is very cool and I’m sure your guests will love it.

I like the second one too. Very modern, yet sweet!

Both are nice. I don’t think the 2nd one is too funky. Are either of them colors from your wedding?

My says:

I like the 2nd one best.

I like the second one, but I’d move that asterisk on the left closer to the “Thank You”–where the butterfly is at the top of the first card. To me, it looks kind of lost floating out there by itself. Also, the asterisk after and above your names kind of looks like there’s supposed to be a note below explaining something. If it were more horizontally aligned with your names I don’t think it would be as “footnote”-y looking. However, those are REALLY nitpicky comments, I realize, and I doubt your guests will stare at it that long!

Are you leaving them flat? Or is it folding over somehow?

I like the first one !!

I love them both! I would get rid of the two random asterisks on the second design; other than that I think they are great. I would print some of both!

Miss Eggplant says:

I vote for the first one! It matches the feel of the venue you’re having your wedding at. :-)

Manda says:

I think for pre-wedding thank yous that the second one is nice. But for post wedding use the ones that better match your theme…

btw…
i’m a complete illustrator novice..how did you create the card? the font & butterfly images were from your program? did you create them or download/purchase them from somewhere?

Didi says:

Miss Jelly Beans says:

My vote is for the first one as well… They are both really cute though… so its a win-win situation in my book… :)

HC says:

I like them both, but I would personally use the second one.

I think you should overlap “from the bottom of our hearts” over “Thank You” in the second design as you did in the first design. The overlap looks really good!

Jen says:

i love them both! btw i LOVE zapfino font, we’re using that and Bell MT (thanks to my cousin’s help) for everything.

Miss Snow Pea says:

I like the 2nd one as a “less girly” alternative. It’s very cool.

If you’re having trouble keep track of your gifts (as I did with the shower), I printed my guest list on an excel sheet, then added what the gift was next to it.

Suz says:

I think the second design doesn’t go well with the font used for “from the bottom of our hearts” but all and all not bad for doing them quickly.

Iris says:

Prefer #1 to #2.

Jayme says:

i think the second one needs a grouping of asterisks to the second one, too. and the overlapping is a nice touch.
