Found: Cake Inspiration!

June 21st, 2007 @ 2:29 pm by Mrs. Lovebug

Originally, Mr. Lovebug and I fell head over heels with the splashy, tilty, colorful cakes we saw at Classic Cakes and Confections in Scottsdale. But having initiated v. 2.0 of our color scheme/theme, we were forced to rethink.

I was afeard that with our newly muted colors of white, silver, black, and pale pink, we’d have to settle for something plainer. Something washed-out looking. I just really didn’t want a white wedding cake. Personal preference n’ all. Well, trolling the cake world last night, I found a couple very strong contenders. Not plain, not boring. Lovely, lacey, vintage-y, and just plain cool:

This one we’d switch the brown for silver, the blue ribbon and trim for pink, and the pale blue for white.

For this one, we’d make the cake pale pink and have the overlay in either silver or black. I never thought I’d come anywhere near to liking black on a wedding cake, but I think with some color underneath, it isn’t be too stark. Bonus: it would make my wannabe goth fiance happy.

They’re both from Truli Confectionary Arts in Philadelphia, which Mrs. Bee blogged about recently. (Thanks, Mrs. Bee!)  But having seen what our baker is capable of, I know she could do a fantastic facsimile of either.

Which do you like better?

I prefer the bottom one, but I’m a complete sucker for those paper cut-out (or Chinese cut-out or Papel Picado) style cakes. I think that the bottom tier on the top cake looks clunky, while the decor on the bottom cake could easily be done in black because it is so delicate.

I like the bottom one, but I think it’s because I’m crazy– I have to have everything even and the top layer on the top cake being different would cause me to lose it. :-) And, I like the flower pattern, modern/classic.

They are both beautiful - I like the varying layer sizes and designs of the top cake but also love the black on pastel look of the bottom cake. How about a combo of the two?

My vote is for the top one–it has more personality and captures that vintage feeling you’re going for

I think #2 is very pretty. But I think #1 goes suits your “tilty” wants a little better. Both would be a great choice.

The first one reminds me of a vintage hat box. Love it!

Depends…. are they both chocolate? Ha!

they’re both great–but it seems like #1 is a little more 40s-vintage-hatbox–it’s darling! (and a little less common in style)

though there’s no reason the bottom cake wouldn’t fit in with whatever else you’ve got planned

I prefer #1. Seems like it would go better w/ your theme, too. But I’d switch the brown for pink, and the blue trim for silver rather than vice versa. Yum, in any case

I vote for #1 if the silver is actually silvery and not matte gray. I agree with “js” about putting the pink on the bottom and have the cut-outs be silver.

I vote for # 2… It would loook so gorgeous in pale pink. The overlay design is gorgeous. So what’s the score?
