About Mrs. Kiwi

A Little Heft For My Friends

June 21st, 2007 @ 4:40 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

My wedding dress will be the second strapless dress I’ve ever worn. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a little worried about the bra situation since I’m a D/DD cup (depending on the bra), and these babies need some help staying in place–I don’t think cups sewn into the dress will work. Since the top of my dress is majorly beaded, I don’t think I have to worry about lines from boning, so that is one thing I don’t need to think about. There are a few ideas I have for the dress: corsets, merry widows, bustiers, longline bras…the list goes on. I like the idea of a corset, since it enables you to cinch it however close you want it, despite making you gasp for breath!

Here are my top choices for wedding day underthings.

Goddess Smooth Bridal Strapless Merry Widow:

A Little Heft For My Friends : wedding los angeles undergarments Z93607590

But if I can see that belly button hole that easily, how “controlling” is it? Will the bottom wires poke into my legs? $56.00, and sizes up to 48DDD.

Then there is the Fantasie of England Underwired Basque Style:

A Little Heft For My Friends : wedding los angeles undergarments Z93608583

This one looks a little more controlling, and is available in sizes up to an F! The site says that it’s good for full-figured women, and the cups are NOT padded, which I love. Never truly understand why some bras have light padding in sizes that are over a D!  $81.00

Next, Va Bien Seamless (really?) Molded Bustier :

A Little Heft For My Friends : wedding los angeles undergarments Z93609201

I really like the shape of this one, and the hip coverage.  It has a low V-back, and seems comfortable.  ($52)  Of course, there’s always Fredricks!

The Ultimate Satin Corset is $68.00, and I must say, looks a little painful. Well, we are talking corsets here!

I know bridal underwear has been talked about a lot on Wedding Bee, but are you using any kind of shapewear?

Darling I FEEL YOUR PAIN! Try being a 32 DD - they don’t even make the size!

Spanx all the way. No boning to poke in my side. I just can’t do it.

I’m looking for a good bra for D’s as well. No advice from me but thanks for posting this!

I’m a 32E, size 10 and pretty curvy and bought that first Goddess longline bra for under my dress. It was totally comfortable and supportive and didn’t need any adjusting over the course of the day. I highly recommend it! If you have a high end department store (Nordstrom) or a specialty lingerie shop near you I really recommend going there and trying on many different styles and letting the sales people guide you.

I at first bought a longline bra, like from David’s, but after talking to several people I work with who got married in the past couple years, they ended up taking them off at some point during the reception!

So I sold the longline bra on Ebay, and I’m just wearing a strapless bra for a little lift and my slip underneath my dress. There is some gathering/ruching at the waist of my dress, so there is no worry about needing to flatten my middle area — the dress is very flattering. I’ve had my dress altered already and it fits PERFECT over just the strapless bra, and nothing slipped around underneath. Not as large on top as you though (C).

The catwoman one is very…. meow!

A tip I’ve read about corsets: If they are worn 1 notch too loose, they are slipping and sliding, and if 1 notch too tight, they generate the dreaded “back fat” overflow at the top (even on skinny-minis), so definitely make sure whoever is helping you dress knows how you want it.

Good point, Iris. I definitely don’t want back cleavage, there is nothing more gross.

“Back cleavage” — ha, made me lol.

I think some brides do forget the back view, unfortunately. Definitely a job for the trusted MOH to do a reality check of what’s going on back there.

I will second what Iris said. I took my wedding dress to the shop I bought my lingerie from. I was really wanting a corset, but they gave my like an INCH of armpit fat. It was unreal. All sizes and types. I tried on a regular strapless bra and spanx and immediately lost the 10lbs the other bras added on and then some!

I recently was a bridesmaid in a wedding, and had a backless halter dress, so I tried on a few strapless backless longlines. I discovered two things about the kind of corset that goes down over your hips:

Be sure to sit down in it. I don’t have the thinnest thighs, and when I sat down, my thighs hit the bottoms of the boning and pushed them up, creating a very unflattering boned bulge.

The other thing about the ones that go down over your hips is that the bottom of the bra might show, depending on the cut of your dress. My bridesmaids dress was pretty drapey, and I don’t have curvy hips, so the bottoms of some bras weren’t even touching my hips, but were sticking out and very visible through the drapey fabric.

Therefore, much though I would have liked some stomach control, I went with a longline that ended at my waist.

I have no advice because I haven’t purchased anything yet but want to say “thanks” for bringing up the topic. I’m finding the hints really helpful too.

OK - I am a 38 F so no exclamation marks like it’s some sort of unreal size here :-P! Without exception I would NOT buy something online - definitely don’t buy it unless you’ve tried it on and been professionally sized. Not only that, but don’t take the tags off of it till you’ve tried it on with the dress so that you can return it if need be.

That being said - most women are wearing the wrong size in this country. Get professionally fitted and don’t give me any of that “But I might be bigger than I think I am,” trust me - your fiancee likes it like that- I promise. The minute you start wearing bras that TRULY fit, your clothes fit better and you actually look slimmer because they’re up where they’re supposed to be.

I got a bustier from BraTenders in NYC (I was in town for a conference and snuck out during it, I don’t live there) and it’s amazing. 38 F fits like a dream and I am tempted to wear it all the time. Thankfully, I bought 3 other bras from them and have wore one into the ground all most.

As to why there is padding on cups over a D, I was with you for a long time and I have finally figured it out. When it is lightly padded (and it’s not even padding at that point, it’s just shaped or molded), it fits smoother to wear under t-shirts and tight fitting clothes. They look more uniform and smooth that way and any dimpling from the breast itself is not shown. So there’s your answer there.

Best of luck finding something that fits! I second the commenter who suggested Nordstroms, they have great fitters and will order things in for you at no extra cost than the cost of the item. Oh and expect to pay a pretty penny for good fitting, good quality bras. There’s just no getting around it. And once you go there, it’s very very hard to go back to the bras that never quite fit - they just languish in my underwear drawer…

I’m a 38DD, and I bought this lovely merry widow from figleaves.com: http://tinyurl.com/2pvh4r It’s very sexy, the ivory matched my gown, and I got the gorgeous matching ivory panties as well. Then, my gown arrived. It wouldn’t zip with the merry widow on underneath. I took it to the seamstress to have it let out a bit, and she had me try it on with nothing underneath. It zipped, wasn’t too tight, and I looked fab. Held me up better than my bras, and certainly was cooler. I asked about sewing in cups, and she said, “why bother, you look good!” So I wore my gown “commando” on top, with control-top pantyhose underneath instead of the sexy stockings I had planned. I haven’t gone out without a bra (other than bathing suits) since I was about fourteen, and even then it wasn’t a good idea. But I looked great. And the merry widow and the stockings became honeymoon lingerie. In fact, I may wear them again tonight. ;)

I’ve heard good things about the Goddess corset. However, being a D/DD cup myself, I’d feel more comfortable with more boning than it has pictured. Also, I’ve had corsets from Frederick’s, and I have not been impressed with the quality and support. I haven’t picked out my dress yet, but I’m leaning toward halter top style dresses to support/flatter my abundant cleavage.

I have to say this: “no. I’m a firm believer in fitness.” I find obnoxious. You can be a firm believe in fitness and still want or need shapewear. I’m the first one who posted and I have 1) a firm belief in fitness, 2) a, not to be self-indulgent, a very nice body (trust me lots of weight watchers), and 3) shapewear. Though I have a flat stomach, etc, etc. I am still using shapewear because it helps smooth things out under a tighter dress and because it makes me feel better. Fitness is NOT the only answer. I can understand saying NO - and I am fine with that, the the follow-up felt like it was chastising my fellow large busted ladies - and ladies, we need none of that.

I bought the top Goddess one you posted and I don’t find it very “firming” but it does give a good shape to the girls. I put a waist cincher on underneath and that holds everything in. I have a very long torso, so for me, it only comes to my waist. Had to go the merry widow route to even get to my waist! Longline bras stop at my tummy.

Thanks, T–I’m a firm believer in fitness, and I happily wore a pair of control-top pantyhose on my wedding day. I’m a distance runner, and I have friends who run everything from half marathons to ultras, and we all sometimes wear varying kinds of shapewear. No matter how fit you are, genetics is still an important factor, and sometimes we like to look smoother or more supported in our clothes. And even if you’re not into exercise, you don’t deserve to be insulted for wanting to look your best on your wedding day. That was a very rude thing to say, Susannah.

Hands down you have to by the Flattering Me bra! http://www.myglassslipper.com/products2.cfm/dept/UNDERGARMENTS/ID/2350

It sits exactly where it is supposed to and makes your dress lay perfectly. I swear by this bra.

I bought a Va Bien bra for my wedding next weekend but it was the long torso version. I like it because it’s comfortable and is the only thing that is even remotely close to being long enough for my torso (I’m 6 ft). But I found that the cup itself was too tall. I didn’t have time to return it but didn’t want my boobs just floating around in there so I got some chicken cutlets from VS (I’m only a size C though). So I would suggest getting a cup size smaller than they suggest.

HTH!

Oooh, Miss Kiwi - I totally feel your pain! I had the worst time finding a bra for under my dress and because I changed my dress so late I had left that until the very last minute so I ended up having to buy a bra in the completely wrong size. I am normally about a 36 D and I ended up buying a 34FF!!! Weird, I know but it did the trick. I did end up with a little back and underarm fat but luckily my dress covered most of it (I think… I hope!) because it had such a high neckline.

Anyhow, my advice is to absolutely go to a shop - bras are funny things and they don’t all fit the same. Also, absolutely take your dress with you if you can - I almost bought the Goddess corset but thankfully once the shop heard that it was for my wedding they insisted that I try it on with my dress first and when I did you could totally see the detailing on the bra through the dress.

Good luck!!
