Product Review

June 21st, 2007 @ 10:42 am by Mrs. Corn

I have been an avid scrapbooker for years and I’ve recently turned most of my attention to my wedding projects. There is one tool that has stood by me year after year. It is the Fiskars, 12” Paper Trimmer.

This tool has cut and folded 75 cover stock pieces into invitation folders and save-the-date cards; 75 cream sheets into text panels for said invitations and save-the-date cards; 120 menu cards, 120 program covers, 120 program inserts, 17 table number signs, 17 ornament explanation cards, 120 escort cards, 120 seating cards, 80 wedding thank you cards; etc. Not to mention the fact that before the wedding I used it for years to cut and fold thousands of brochures for a local library on top of all the cardmaking and scrapbooking!

There are a thousand items out there to use for cutting paper into straight lines, and I have tried most of them. The Fiskars system is hands-down the most reliable and at only $19.99 it is a total steal. I am pretty sure some of the major scrapbooking companies now sell straight cutters that are very similar, but Fiskars got it right the first time, so I recommend the system without any reservations.

That’s great to hear! I’m just starting to scrapbook and blindly bought this tool two days ago because it looked simple enough to use and sophisticated enough to make cutting easier.

Miss Corn,
How often would you say you have to change your blade?

Miss Snow Pea,

I have changed my blade once since purchasing it and that was after cutting 1200 programs for the local library!

That’s pretty amazing. I bought some cheap cutter and after a few times, I noticed my blade was getting dull and skipping my cardstock (even though I can replace blade). I’ll have to invest in a Fiskars now that you recommend it. Fortunately at work, we have these huge plot cutters so I have been using that for my place cards. Thank you.

it is a great little tool, but i find the plastic ruler can warp. so you need to optimize the speed you move the blade and make sure you don’t put pressure pushing side to side (sorry if i’m just confusing everyone!)

thanks for the post! would you recommend this type of cutter over the small gullotine type cutters?

Hi iheartq,

I do own a small guillotine cutter from Creative Memories (I used to be a sales rep for them) and I also highly recommend that cutter. However, for most of my cutting needs, I have needed something that can cut and or score a 12″ piece of paper, which the small guillotines can’t accommodate. I find that once I am on a roll with cutting with the Fiscars 12″, I don’t feel like switching back to the guillotine cutter for the small stuff.

I have this one! I LOVE it!

There is a slight bite of sway room, so make sure you slide the slider fast, so it cuts straight. But, yeah. The cuts aren’t always straight. Definitely not as precise as a guillotine cutter.

I used the regular blade on my favors and the scoring blade on my invitations and they worked great! :) My only complaint would be that the scoring blade would sometimes smear the printing if I pressed too hard. But, it wasn’t extremely noticeable.

yeah, I had issues with it cutting a bit crooked as well~ either it’s obviously crooked, or the last 2 cm on the bottom of the sheet get cut noticeably crooked. :( i love love love paper trimmers, just wondering if i’m doing something wrong? i guess i should try to push down the cutter a bit faster?

If you call Fiskars warranty department at 1-800-422-9744, they can send you a clear replacement ruler for the trimmer. Sometimes it stretches out after use and that could be causing a crooked cut.
