Beehive

June 22nd, 2007 @ 4:16 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. M is looking for a good calligraphy class in NYC for about $50.
  2. Can anyone tell futurebaroness whose bio this picture came from?  (She found it off of Rustic Bio.)
  3. Amanda would like suggestions for inexpensive rehearsal dinner invites (either printed professionally or DIY’ed).  It will be a relatively casual dinner, and she’ll only need about 13 invites.
  4. Can anyone tell Pangcha what kind of tree this is?  She’d like to use it in her centerpieces.

Question: How soon is too soon to send save-the-dates? We are still 14+ months out, and a lot of “rules” say these should go out 6-8 months ahead, but I am anxious to get this checked off my list as I have a great idea for them. Our guest list is pretty set in stone with family and people we have been friends with for a long time, so we don’t see anything changing there. Is 11-12 months too early??

Amanda - try vistaprint.com I had to order some baby shower invites…pretty happy with their quality and service. I chose the 2 week processing and shipping option, but they got here in less than a week!

Brooke- Part of it depends on how much of your guest list is traveling to get there, and whether or not it is around a holiday. I’m also wondering how early is too early to send them out though. My wedding is 18 months away but it’s also around holidays AND half the guests are traveling pretty far to get there(NC or GA to NJ).

I used Kate at Moderninvites.com for my RD invites, and I LOVED them….I just told her the theme and colors of my wedding and sent her a pdf of our invite, so she could match it, and she rocked them! I paid $.75 per invite and I can’t find a better deal anywhere.

Question/Advise-(apologies this is going to be long):

My wedding is on July 7 and I decided to have my three flower girls wear tutus. I ordered the tutus in April and the manufacturer/retailer guarenteed that I would have them by the end of May. Despite immediately paying for the tutus in full, I still have not received them.

Needless to say, I have been in frequent contact with the owner of this company. She reassures me that I do not have to worry. The first time I contacted her (and actually received an answer after threatening to sue her) she told me that they must have been lost in the mail and that she would ship me another set on June 12 via priority mail. I emailed her again on Thursday June 21, to notify her that I have not received them and to request the tracking number. She failed to respond with a tracking number, but did tell me not to worry and that she would create and overnight the tutus if necessary.

Here is the question: What do I do?
Buy new dresses and sue the retailer. Trust her and wait. Threaten her that I will post tales of her service on the web…

I am sorry that this is so long, but I am so incredibly angry about this situation.

Brit - Are these really detailed tutus, or could you go to a dance/fitness supply type of place and buy them off-the-rack? Or, if that doesn’t work out, maybe call some local dance studios to see if they could possibly lend you some or direct you somewhere else?

If nothing else, I say buy them somewhere else for now to have as back-ups if the ordered tutus never arrive. This vendor does not sound at all reliable, so I wouldn’t count on them arriving if I were you. I would focus your energy on finding them elsewhere, and whether or not the original tutus arrive, demand a refund for your trouble. Sueing seems a bit extreme to me, but I don’t know what kind of contract you signed with them or how much money you put out.

Good luck!

to looking for photographer (june 4, 2007)

Jeff lau is a good friend and he’s very reliable. I’ve seen several of the weddings he’s done and they’ve all come out great. For rates, email him.
check him out on his website http://www.jefflauphoto.com

I have a sample slideshow of a wedding he did this year for our friend. http://www.cilandmichael.com/

Brooke-
Thank you for your suggestions. The tutus were to be both detailed and custom made in various lengths and the colors of the wedding. I also let the flower girls pick out their own, so I know that they will be disappointed with an alternative. That being said, I think your advise is spot-on, having a back-up would definitely ease my mind.

I do really do appreciate your suggestion about going to a dance supply store. I may have to settle for a different color, but that would not be the end of the world.

Thank you for your advise!

What are the rules with USPS about mailing items? I want to create our Save-the-Date’s and print them out using 8×11 cardstock that breaks apart into 4 postcards, with the image on one side, and the address/stamp on the other - is that kosher?

Mrs. Bee… I posted this earlier, but I think it missed your cut-off for gathering new questions from the hive. I’m still curious about an answer. My question:
Is anyone sending wedding announcements and do you think it’s a bad idea? I have many friends who I’m not inviting to the wedding because it’s a smaller affair, but still want to get the word out that I’m married. Is it bad form to send it to folks after the ceremony has taken place to let them know or will it just make people wonder why they weren’t invited?

B, not sure exactly what you are looking for in terms of “unique,” but try http://www.shoploveme.com/

They seem to have somethings that may work…

Hi All,

I was thinking of getting married in Central Park,
Sept 2009. I was wondering if the boathouse is a good
spot for an informal, relaxed wedding reception with
good food? Should only be 30-50 people attending as we
are all travelling from Ireland, any suggestions??

Thanks a million for any info that you can offer,

Janet

Thanks for the offer, miss violet –
I actually went with the suggestion of VistaPrint, and whipped something together on Saturday — I chose the 14 day processing option as well, and received an email this morning that they shipped already! I wonder how quickly they would have come if i chose the 21 day for even cheaper…
