We All Scream For Sunscreen

June 27th, 2007 @ 4:25 pm by Mrs. Eggplant

For everyone that is travelling to a hot ’n happy honeymoon destination, the Environmental Working Group has tested and rated 783 different products with sunscreen and written a report on the safest and most effective sunscreens available on the market. Ratings include sunscreen effectiveness from blocking both UVA and UVB rays and health hazards from ingredients that the products include.

They also have a list of “worst sunscreens” as well.

Actually, we all would do well to use this information. I’m training my beau to wear sunscreen everyday!

I use Arbonne Sunscreen. I have both the 15SPF and the 30SPK. They don’t feel greasy like others do and they really protect me. If you are interested in trying them, send me an email and I can tell you how to buy it. kellycevans@hotmail.com

Wow, I thought that all sunscreens were basically the same. Thanks for the post.

I don’t know what exactly the criteria was to rank and score the products for this study but my face block is on the best list and my body block was not on the worst. Hooray.

Thanks for posting this. Everyone should think of good sun protection.

Mine face sunblock is one of the top! Thanks for the info. I got mine based on how it felt on my face at the end of the day.

Great info. Hm, the better sunscreens have higher SPF than the worse sunscreens. Glad to see mine is on the good list. : )

I’ve been using Neutrogena’s Dry Touch sunblocks, and they really do deliver on the matte, non-greasy finish.

I also use Neutrogena Dry Touch SPF 55 every day (and I’m Black)! I don’t know how some people think it’s ok to go without. Last weekend my brother was peeling from sunburn but of course he won’t wear sunscreen.

Neutrogena Dry Touch was rated the best by Consumer Reports recently, though effectiveness wasn’t their only criteria, I believe. I use the new SPF 70, because I’m an Irish girl. It’s also important to remember that most people don’t use sunblock in daily life like they actually test it (in a layer as thick as frosting), so SPF 70 might actually work more like SPF 30. Skin cancer runs hard core in my family, so it’s important to protect!

I use Neutrogena Dry Touch 55 too and I LOVE it. It doesn’t make my makeup orange. My mother has rosaecea (sp) and sunscreen’s the number one thing my derm says will help stave it off in me. Plus, you know, the whole skin cancer thing. Tanning is so 1985!

Here’s a wedding-related thought: have sunscreen available for your guests if you’re having an outdoor wedding. There’s a photo in the new Martha Stewart Weddings of a compote filled with little packets of sunscreen. I say this because some of our guests recently told me they got sunburned at my wedding on June 3rd! I planned to get parasols for my guests if needed, but rain was forecast all week and I didn’t bother (I was trying to save money wherever I could so I found a place that sold them and waited until I saw the weather report.) The morning was bright and apparently the sun came out for our ceremony (I didn’t even notice! ;) I was under a chuppah, though.) One of my guests even peeled, apparently. I feel bad about that. I wish I had gotten the parasols now.

About sunscreen in general–I used to love the Neutrogena Dry Touch for my face, but on my honeymoon on St. Lucia, when I was glopping it on by the handful every day, the Dry Touch started to cause a burning sensation when I put it on my face. So I stopped and used Coppertone Sport everywhere.

For running, I like to put Coppertone stick sunscreen on my forehead and around my eyes, because it doesn’t run at all. Amazing how much a combination of sweat and sunscreen hurts when it runs in your eyes!

BTW–sorry for three posts!–but I don’t like those rating lists. Most of the “worst” sunscreens aren’t really sunscreens, they’re daily moisturizers with SPF 15. They’re not designed for the beach, they’re to wear to the office, shopping, or school, and they’re sufficient for that. I don’t think the ozone problem is so bad that we’re all expected to go around with beach-level sunscreen all day every day. I hope not, as my skin would be broken out all year!

I use Avon’s Skin so Soft SPF 30 with bug guard when I garden. I like it a lot.
