About Beehive

Beehive

June 28th, 2007 @ 4:49 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  1. C would like to know how to figure out what to wear to a wedding (as a guest).  An invitation she’s received doesn’t say black tie, but she has the impression it’s pretty formal.
  2. Andrea and her fiance will be honeymooning along the PCH, from San Francisco to Seattle.  Any recommendations on where to go?  Sonoma?  Mendocino?  Northern CA?  Also, how long does it take, and what should they know first?
  3. AmandaB is looking for inexpensive vases to hold her bridesmaids’ bouquets at the reception (four or five while calla lilies, presentation style).
  4. kandaceandjason are going on a cruise for their honeymoon, and they’ve heard it’s cheaper to organize shore excursions outside of the the cruise line.  Can anyone advise, or recommend books to look through?  Also, any suggestions for fun, free port excursions?  (They’re cruising on Carnival, through Montego Bay, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel.)
  5. e needs an NYC alterations recommendation.  Also, is it OK to go to cake tastings at more than one place?  Or should she only go to those places that offer to set one up?  (Her cake is very small; some vendors don’t offer tastings for cakes that size.)
  6. currystrumpet is considering DIY’ing her aisle runner by handpainting, block printing, or stenciling her wedding emblem.  What’s a nice, inexpensive fabric to use?

my question should be regarding wine tours. We would like to take a wine tour in Sonoma or N. CA. Thanks!

AmandaB– try http://www.save-on-crafts.com/vases.html for cheap vases. They have a lot of different types.

e– Go to cake tastings as many places as you can! You want your cake to be good, and you really need to taste and compare. Also, it’s so much fun!

currystrumpet– I’d suggest buying a plain aisle runner and embellishing it yourself. Just imagine trying to hem yards and yards of fabric! Get the cotton/polyester kind, not the plastic kind. Just google “aisle runner.”

AmandaB, one word: IKEA!!

kandaceandjason: You are correct, it is generally cheaper to book outside of the cruise, although if you find it hard it is definitely less hassle to book through the cruise. You could try the Lonely Planet books but personally I’m all about web research now - check the website of the tourist body for the areas you’re visiting and any sites with visitor reviews. Look into hikes and walks along the beaches and also explore the shops etc at your own leisure. But it’s your honeymoon, I hope you are able to splurge on at least one really fun excursion like snorkeling or horseback riding on the beach or something :)

Andrea- Sonoma can be cheaper in terms of wine tasting at each winery than the napa valley wineries. Sometimes its $10 per person in napa where in Sonoma you can most likely find free tastings. I’ve never been to mendocino but I bet you there are more free tastings there.
A tip we use to save money is that we share a glass. Technically you’re not supposed to drink it, hence the spit bucket. I haven’t been on any tours, just driven there myself but some places don’t allow the tour (mini) buses.
In napa valley, going to the Rubicon Winery (formerly Francis Ford Coppola’s Winery) was free and you can tour the place to check out the movie memorabilia (i.e. the horse’s head) but they charge at the entrance now. You get a tour and a tasting out of it though. IMO, don’t go on the wine train.

kandaceandjason - definitely check out http://www.cruisecritic.com. Esp the forums available for each port destination. Lots of info on different type of excursions and which vendors have been used in the past. I usually book outside of the cruiseline because it is a lot cheaper and you don’t have to deal with a big a crowd. The only time I booked with the cruiseline is when the timing was a bit tight in terms of when the excursion i wanted to do ended and when the ship was set to sail. The cruiseline will wait for any excursions sponsored by the cruiseline if it is running late.

Though not free, I definitely recommend going to Stingray city in Grand Cayman.

c - when is the wedding? Is it an evening affair, or an afternoon? Unless it specifies “black tie” or “formal,” I would stay away from a long gown. I think one can never go wrong with a simple cocktail dress. The invitation style probably should give some impression of the formality, as well as the couple themselves. Good luck!

My dress is scheduled to come in approximately 4 weeks before the wedding! Is that going to be enough time for fittings and alterations?

I have a question for the hive - where can I buy spanx? are there any stores that sell them (in a wide variety?) so I can try on certain sizes?

Thanks

Amanda- Dry Creek Valley in Healdsburg for wine tasting. There are TONS of wineries along a quaint highway. It’s a great spot. Make sure to stop in downtown Healdsburg as well, it’s very cute.

kandaceandjason: it’s definitely cheaper to set up excursions when you’re on shore. i took that exact cruise a while ago and a lot of what they offer in the onboard newsletter is available through independent vendors upon disembarking at the port. totally cheaper and a lot of fun!

k: spanx are available at nordstrom and come in a ton of sizes there. that’s where i get mine! they run about $36 a pop for the ones with the control top that goes to right under your bust line and go all the way down to your thighs for total control. they’re awesome. good luck!

Andrea: I haven’t been wine-tasting very often, but I know of two websites that have listings of wineries and winery tours (that I’ve used for other things). The first is http://www.napayolanoharvesttrails.org
where you can click on the Wine logo and find wineries in Napa, Yolo and Solano counties. If you want to check out options in any other Califonia county, you can also try http://www.calagtour.org/AgTour.ASP

k–I posted a review of my Spanx experience a while back, so I’m glad to hear you’ll be trying on in person before buying–I didn’t, and spent a lot of money on a product that doesn’t work for me :-(

I *think* Macy’s carries the Spanx brand, tho any higher-end department store should be able to help you find a similar product that’s perfect for your needs–many other people said Spanx haven’t worked for them either, so I think it’d be best to try on a few different brands and products if possible–glad that’s what you’re planning on doing!

hth :-)

kandaceandjason: i’ve done cruises to mexico, alaska, and hawaii. seriously, when you step off the boat you’ll find locals that are more than willing to give you a great tour for 1/4 the price of the “excursions” through the cruiseline.

totally invaluable - buy a “lonely planet” for your destination - it will point out the best kept secrets of where you visit!

hi tanya! thanks for your reply. i live in the philippines, we don’t have ready-made aisle runners here :-P buying online from the states will also turn out to be too expensive for me, with the shipping and all :-( so any suggestions on fabric would be great. it’s super cheap over here to have someone hem fabric for me!

jk - Depends on who is altering your dress. My friend’s mom is an excellent seamstress. She fitted me one day, and had my dress ready the next morning!
Make sure that whoever is altering your dress is able to do so (depending on where the detail/seams are located) then schedule an appointment now for whenever your dress is expected to come in. Not sure when you’re getting married, but there’s probably a bit of a backup in getting an appointment now since it’s “peak wedding season.”
