An Everlong Kiss The Girl?

June 29th, 2007 @ 4:00 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

After previously deciding we could dance to “Kiss the Girl” from The Little Mermaid, Mr. Kiwi has decided it’s not cool enough.

This is Ariel, sad that he wants something else.

z961792

Of course, I love “Kiss the Girl”, always have. He’s loved Foo Fighter’s acoustic version of “Everlong”, always has. We may even be able to have a friend play it for us. Mr. Kiwi agrees that “Kiss the Girl” is a little more themed for us as a couple and “Everlong” is a little less, and ” just awesome”. I love “Everlong”, the acoustic version is lovely, but is it really a first dance song? I love how Mr. Kiwi is passionate about this song, and how it’s something HE really wants, but the acoustic version is REALLY hard to find.

Everlong Lyrics (for your consideration)

Hello
I’ve waited here for you
Everlong

Tonight I throw myself into
And out of the red
Out of her head she sang

Come down
And waste away with me
Down with me

Slow how
You wanted it to be
I’m over my head
Out of her head she sang

And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I’ll ever ask of you
You’ve got to promise not to stop when I say when…she sang

Breathe out so I can breathe you in
Hold you in
And now I know you’ve always been
Out of your head
Out of my head I sang

And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I’ll ever ask of you
You’ve got to promise not to stop when I say when
she sang

And I wonder
If everything could ever feel with real forever
If anything could be this good again
The only thing I’ll ever ask of you
You got to promise not to stop when I say when

I think Mr. Kiwi’s recent unhappiness regarding our “song” is due to all the weddings we have attended. They have all had the first dance to “At Last” by Etta James. It’s a beautiful song, and a timeless choice for a reason. He’s just thinking about how our wedding needs to have more “personalization” to it - the ribbons, the invites, the favors, they’re all common, and we saw the exact same thing at his cousin’s wedding. Now he wants to stand out and since the ribbons and favors are already bought, we need something else. He wants a new song. A SPECIAL song.

Other than playing the Monday Night Football theme song, I have no other ideas for a first dance song that isn’t the norm. I guess it’s “Everlong” for us.

Are you doing a different kind of first dance song?

I’ve loved Everlong ever since I heard at Monica & Chandler’s wedding. I think that’s an excellent choice. Good luck with the acoustic version! As far as different… we’re doing an old Cuban slow song. I think everybody will really like it. We do!

I hate going to weddings where the couple dance to songs like “At Last” and “God Bless the Broken Road.” Those have been the first dance song at sooo many weddings I’ve attended.

I think the first dance song is a place you can really show your personalities and have fun with it. I like both of your choices..I’ve never even thought of “Kiss the Girl” and it think it’s really cute! “Everlong” is also a good choice, but I think you should go with something that fits you as a couple.

That being said, we’re doing “18th Floor Balcony” by Blue October. We both love the band and the song just fits us. I can guarantee that the majority of our guests will never even have heard it!

I agree, find a song that will work for both of you. Both of those are very original.

We’ll be using “The Luckiest” by Ben Folds

I think “Everlong” is a good choice. Maybe you could use “Kiss the Girl” as your last song? That way you can incorporate both.

Our first dance song is “Ladies and Gentlement We’re Floating in Space” by Spiritualized. On our first date we went to see that band it’s kind of been one of our songs ever since. I don’t think it’s a song or band that most people have ever heard of though.

Our last song is going to be “Northern Sky” by Nick Drake. Have you ever heard it? It’s a beautiful song and easy to dance to. You should check it out, maybe you and Mr. Kiwi would like that one.

But come to think of it… there is a possibility that I might have an mp3 of the acoustic version. Hmmm… I will look for it and let you know.

I love Everlong. I think it’s a perfect first dance song. It’s up to you though. You both have to love it and let it mean something to you. We’re dancing to “Into The Mystic” by Van Morrisson. We both love it and it fits us perfectly.

I am having this problem. I have forever wanted the Norah Jones version of “Nearness of You.” But I have two concerns: a) Is it too common? b) My Metalicca-loving, Megadeath-jamming FI isn’t going to enjoy it, even if he gives in to me.

Any suggestions on how to compromise - other than “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith (4 weddings so far this year have had it).

We danced (just last Sunday!) to I Don’t Know Why by Shawn Colvin. Maybe not as off the beaten track, but still super sweet.

I agree that it is more fun to have a special song - both the ones you are considering sound great!

It took us forever to pick a song because I wanted something special. We ended up using “Never Stop Falling in Love” by Pink Martini - a pretty obscure song but lots of fun! I love the lyrics, and it has a fun Latin beat. We secretly took a few salsa lessons and worked them into the dance, to the surprise of everyone. It fit us because we like being fun and silly and I really love dancing - we had so much fun working on the dance!

We actually did pretty simple steps but got lots of compliments. I think guests appreciate unique choices because like you said, it gets a bit repetitive to watch couples dance to the same songs over and over. Personally I think Kiss the Girl would be really cute, but sounds good either way! :)

We danced to our favorite song “Let’s Never Stop Falling in Love” by Pink Martini (one of our favorite groups!). The problem we had was that the song is not slow enough for the basic sway-sway dancing.
So, we decided to just go for it, and have a faster paced song for our first dance. We took a few private lessons, learned some basic cha-cha steps, a dip, a couple turns, and then went all out of the dance floor!
We had NO dance skills to start. We still aren’t that good… but our guests were shocked! They are still talking about our original first dance!
So perhaps something more upbeat could work to make the first dance more unique.
Oh, and our instructor is in the Los Angeles area if you are interested in her info.

If you really want personalization, maybe you guys could try something a little more upbeat that describes you both better. It’s a huge trend to do choreographed (did I spell that right?) dance the tango or something just fun… it makes it more interesting than just the two of you slow-dancing and it’s a memory you and your guests will keep for a lifetime.

Awesome Sarah. We are HUGE Pink Martini fans.

We are dancing to one of their influences…
OsMutantes’ “Baby”

I like the non-conforming song at a wedding!

Can you use “Kiss the Girl” at another time –bouquet toss, cake cutting?

I don’t know the Everlong song at all, but one suggestion/question: is it “danceable”? A lot of the songs people use for their first dance are too slow, tempo-wise, to do anything other than just sway to. I really liked “Kiss the Girl” when you first suggested it because it is actually something you can _dance_ a ballroom-type dance to. I think if Everlong is like that too, that’s a good thing — often what makes an impression on people is not just the song, but also the way the couples dances together.

Aw, I love everlong. Awesome song choice! We’re just throwing the worry about lyrics out the window and doing “Champagne Supernova” by Oasis. It just rocks, and neither of us really like super slow stuff. It’s insanely long though, so we’re going to wave everyone on after a few minutes…
ps. my second choice is “the luckiest” by ben folds…also awesome choice!

Nicole, that’s hilarious - I thought I was the only girl on the planet who loves Norah Jones, Sarah McLachlan type stuff but has a metalhead fiance!! Mine’s all over Metallica and Pantera too. But there has to be some sort of first-dance appropriate song that he likes that isn’t metal? Mine seems to like “I’ll Be” by Edwin McCain so we might do that.

well… if everlong and kiss the girl are more you then our first dance may not work. heh.

i chose “so this is love” from cinderella because it wasn’t too long, and it suited us, and we were going to disney for our honeymoon - which most people might not have thought of. but. i really liked it.

I love “Kiss the Girl” toooo!!! I am so bad at song names I am sorry I can’t help you. I personally love all the ColdPlay songs.

Our first dance is to Songbird by Eva Cassidy. I think it’s different.

I’m sorry that I’m going to say this because it’s a great song, but when Everlong came out it was the single most used first dance song for that year and the next.
So in that regard, I don’t see how it’s any more original than At Last. If you’re looking for a rebuttle to using it, there ya go :)

YAY! I was so excited to see this…I’m totally with Mr. Kiwi! I used “If everything could ever feel this real forever, If everything could ever be this good again, the only thing I’ll ever ask of you, gotta promise not to stop when I say when…” as a quote in our programs, and my FIL and DH’s uncle did an acoustic version of “Times Like These” during our ceremony. I LOOOOVE the FOO!!! That quote totally summarized everything I felt that day.

Anywho, our first dance was the acoustic of “Fields of Gold”. (Not the new classical one, but an acoustic guitar version…awesome.)

Everlong has been my favorite song ever since I first heard it. Even more so after I heard the acoustic version. I can’t find the acoustic version anywhere though - how did you get it? I didn’t see it on I-Tunes, but maybe I didn’t look hard enough.

Our first dance song was “Love is in the Air” by John Paul Young, the version from “Simply Ballroom,” a movie that we both love. We love that movie, but not Luhrmann’s followups, and when we realized that on our third date, it cemented the feeling each of us had that this was going to be a special relationship. And we don’t otherwise have a “song.” I had a hard time thinking of a first dance song, but suddenly a vision of people ballroom dancing to that song popped into my head. And it’s a great song to dance to–we’re both terrible dancers but we had a great time, we even twirled!

Ours is “Sweet Avenue” by Jets to Brazil. When we first met, we bonded over a shared love for the band, and the lyrics are adorable: “This day could someday be an anniversary. Everything is light and sound.” and the quote we used on our invitations: “All these tastes improve through the view that comes with you; like they handed me my life, for the first time it felt worth it– like I deserved it.” Man, I love that song.

We are dancing to Broken by Jack Johnson. We are having an intimate, beachside )outdoors) reception in Hawaii where we live, and one of our favorite songs by our favorite singer would be perfect. Now, if I could just figure out a way to get Jack Johnson there to actually sing the song, that would be awesome!!

I found the acustic version. It is on Napster they are selling the CD, which you might be able to find on Amazon or some place similar. It is on the “modern wedding collections” cd, the artist is the Vitamin String Quartet, it was released in 2007 by the label “Vitamin Records”. It’s listed for $9.99 on Napster. Hope that helps!!

Amy - Sweet Avenue is one of my favorite songs! I didn’t think of it for a first dance, but now that you mention it it’s absolutely perfect. Brilliant choice!

Miss Kiwi, just a thought to make your wedding stand out, personalize your table names with cities you’ve been to, and give luggage tags as table escort cards….or simply use calligraphered names. Those are just a few ideas we used at our wedding.

Our first dance song is Warmness on the soul by Avenged Sevenfold. AWESOME SONG!

The acoustic version of Everlong was first recorded on the Howard Stern show and may have some people talking over it.. also Dave Grohl vastly shortened the song b/c it was the first time he ever did it acoustic. You might wanna stick to the album version or try another sweet Disney song that your FI might like better?

I have an acoustic version of Everlong that has no talking and is the same length as the regular version. Unfortunately, I can’t remember where it came from, though.

We thought about doing a “traditional” first dance song, but it just didn’t feel like us. So no Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett here! We’re dancing to “Swallowed in the Sea” by Coldplay.

Our first dance song is “Nothing Else Matters” by Metallica. Yes, Metallica as our wedding song. Some of the “elders” at the wedding prob. won’t appreciate it.. but it’s our wedding. Favorite band for FI, favorite song for me.
The best was when I told my brother, “we picked our wedding song, wanna know what it is?”, and he was like..”umm..no, not really”.. and then I said Metallica and he freaked out. :)
It’s your wedding express yourself however You see fit. We only get to do this once!!

I’m in the same boat as Nicole & Laura S! We have some overlapping music interests, but he likes some of the metal stuff that I’m not as fond of.

I was thinking about the Luckiest by Ben Folds because I’m obsessed with Ben Folds. We have to pick something together still though.

FI was asked to think about songs, and he suggested “If I could” by October Project.
Check out the lyrics:
If I could
I would always tell the truth
I would always love you
From the heart

If I could
I would take you in my arms
Take you inside
Into my heart

If I could
I would be the place you turn
When you’re feeling lonely
Or afraid

I would shine
Like a lantern in the dark
Take you inside
Into my heart

When you feel as if
You don’t know who you are
I’ll remind you with my love

If I could
I would always keep you safe
Take you inside
Into my heart

When you feel as if
You simply can’t go on
I’ll remind you that you’re strong

If I could
I would love you as you are
Take you inside
Into my heart

Into my arms
Into my life

I’m currently sobbing along to Patty Griffin’s “Heavenly Day”. My boy wasn’t as blown away as I was, so it’s not gonna be our first dance, but you can bet yer bippy that it’ll be featured on our favor CD! (you can listen to it on her myspace page)
