In today’s hive:

  1. jk’s dress is scheduled to come in approximately four weeks before the wedding; will that be enough time for fittings and alterations?
  2. Can anyone tell k where to find Spanx?  Are there stores that sell a wide variety of them, so she can try different sizes?
  3. Amy is considering getting wedding insurance. Does anyone have any experience with this, and can anyone recommend a company?

K - I got mine at Nordstrom

Juligie says:

K- I’ve seen Spanx at Nordstroms and Saks…carry a variety of styles/colors/sizes =)

3.
Emily says:

K- All department stores carry them, and Nordstrom and Bloomingdales both carry a wide variety of them. Both stores will let you try on as many as you like and have well trained people to help guide you to the right style. Hint: check both hoisery and lingerie departments for the full selection of styles.

i’m getting insurance though Wedsafe. They seem honest and have been easy to talk to with all my questions I had.

Iris says:

K - I find them cheap all the time at Filene’s Basement, so check discount stores like TJMaxx, Marshalls, etc.

K - I’m not sure this is the type of thing you take into a dressing room and try on. It’s more like buying stockings - height/weight = size. Nordstroms, Saks, lots of bridal salons

i was allowed to try the higher power ones on at lord & taylors.

jk- have you had any fittings at all? is it custom-made or off the rack. If off the rack, i saw you cutting it pretty close, but what can you do now? Find a seamstress who works fast and knows your timeline early on. For example my first fitting was 10 weeks before wedding. then i had 2 more.

k - bloomindales has em’

I got mine directly through rvnuncio(sp?) Fireman’s fund. Its not as easy to wade through as the wedsafe website. I was still able to talk to someone about questions and it was cheaper!

jk - I got mine off the rack and had my first fitting on June 2nd and I have my final fitting today (June 29th) - didn’t really have to do much to it - just hemmed the bottom and created a bustle though. Everything else fit perfectly.

AmandaB says:

jk- also, if you’re getting the dress just 4 weeks before the wedding, you shouldn’t need multiple alterations. I wouldn’t think your weight would fluctuate too much in 1 month to be worth altering it more than once.

alison says:

k - you can buy spanx at Nordstrom and online, I’ve also seen it at Nordstrom rack. Target also carries “assets” which is a less expensive version by the same maker.

Iris says:

K - there was a recent posting on this; type “spanx” into the new google search bar at the top of this page.

I’m going to a wedding next Saturday and I know the bridesmaids are wearing sage. Can I wear a green colored dress it is the same shade as the Weddingbee font color?

My gown came in less than four weeks before the wedding–it was a week late. What we did was put me in for the first available fitting date. I had to take some time off work, but I had no choice, I needed my gown. Luckily, my dress was perfect, I didn’t need alterations! (I ordered a hollow to hem measurement so no hemming needed.) So I think it depends on the amount of alterations, and how busy your seamstress tends to be. I suggest you figure this out before the gown comes in, by trying on the sample again, if needed. Good luck!

Anyone know a website that has reasonably priced birdcage veils? Do you think it’d be easy to make?

20.
Go Amie says:

Abi - I like the veils at this etsy store, and I bet the artist would be willing to custom make one for you. http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=22504

Does anyone out there know of any good wedding podcasts? I was listening to the Brides Magazine podcast, and it was a great way to pass the time of my workout and commute, but they seemed to have stopped recording them.

Hey guys! Ive done quite a bit of wedding coordination for friends recently, and am considering starting up a business on the side from my interior design life. How much would you be willing to pay for a wedding coordinator? My coordination would include help on reception decoration and execution, day of and rehearsal coordination, and lots of decoration and etiquette advice. I also have done several last minute hair and makeup repairs when vendors use crappy hair spray or products that dont last. im an interior designer and have a pretty good eye for floral arrangements and aisle, alter decoration, etc. Thanks much for the help girls!

hi wedding bees! i am in need of some rhinestone brooches to attach to a sash for my bridesmaids dresses. i will be in nyc for the next few days…any suggestions on where i could pick some good, cheap ones up?

29.
Petra says:

jf
If you look at Miss Snowpea’s post entitled “Ai Sakai” she mentions getting some lovely rhinestone brooches and hair pins in ‘Korea-town’ in NYC which is 32nd St. between 5th Ave. and Broadway. I’m from the area, and that is a great neighborhood for inexpensive trinkets like this. It’s known as the ‘garment district’.

I wonder if the hive can help me out - I’m looking for a good, free wedding website (not a free trial for a week or two). It doesn’t need to have much, but it should be ad-free and reliable.

katiey says:

Hi! I know this is a wedding planning site but I wondered if any married ladies had advice for first anniversary celebrations. I’m trying to plan a trip. The traditional first anniversary gift is paper so I thought a plane ticket or hotel reservation would be a nice gift!

Question–did anyone see the What Not to Wear Wedding episode? I loved the way the blonde bride’s hair was styled (half up/half down). Does anyone have a link to a picture? Thanks!

Metropolitain Impex on 6th ave and 35th street has lots of inexpensice wedding jewelry “parts”, like pins and tiaras and gloves..

BD - I agree with Clarissa. Mywedding.com is wonderful. That’s what I’m using.

Tea, I have a fun bachelorette game that we did with two of my friends. Ask the guests to bring a pair of panties that somehow represent them. (For example, I love stars so I brought a pair with stars on them.) All of the panties go into a bag or box, and the bride-to-be takes them out one at a time and guesses who they are from. You can add a “take a shot” requirement if you want cocktails to be invovled. I thought it was fun, we had some laughs and took some great photos. Enjoy!
