Yucatan Roadtrip Honeymoon!

June 29th, 2007 @ 6:12 pm by Mrs. Peppermint

We’re going to the Yucatan for our honeymoon (I’m so excited!). In the beginning of the planning process we were completely clueless as to where to go. Mr. Peppermint wanted city and culture, and while I would like both of those, I definitely wanted some relaxation! After my dad’s suggestion, I called the travel agent that he’s used countless times for our family trips (Classic Travel) and went from there. Sheila has been great! She really helped us hone in on what we are looking for and plan a trip that is perfectly suited to us. So here it is:

December 1oth (the Monday after our Saturday wedding)
Flight from LAX to Cancun (arriving at 4:25pm)
Drive our rental car south to Playa del Carmen
We’re either staying at Hotel La Tortuga (swim-up room!) or Mosquite Beach (La Tortuga is booked, but we’re seeing if it opens up…)

December 13th
Drive further south along the coast to remote Tulum.
We’re staying at Azulik (an eco-hotel with bungalows right on the beach) Check out this board on Tulum–very helpful.

December 15th
Drive inland to Chichen Itza (home to the impressive Mayan Ruins). Staying at Mayaland Hotel (with an in-room jacuzzi!)

December 16th
Drive further East to Merida (the capitol city of the Yucatan). Staying at Hotel Casa Lucia.

December 20th - Fly home (Merida to Mexico City, Mexico City to LA)

It should be a great roadtripping adventure filled with beaches, relaxation, Mayan ruins, museums and great food! Plus, apparently the twelve days before Christmas are filled with celebrations…

In short: I can’t wait!

My FI and i stayed at the Piedra Escondida in Tulum last year. It is the hotel right next to Azulik. You couldn’t have picked a better spot! There is a little restaurant/bar that has live music called “Zamas” right down the street. if you have time, check it out!

Azulik is awesome! My FI and I wanted to stay there but couldn’t afford it. A really great restaurant is at the hotel Ana y Jose further down that dirt road. I personally hated Playa del Carmen (so touristy) and would rather spend those days in Tulum instead.

I basically did this trip but stayed in hostels a few years ago - you’re definitely hitting the highlights! Do Chichen Itza early in the day because there’s not much shade and it gets HOT - although December might be better.

Merida was great - try to go on a market day if you can.

sounds like so much fun!! be aware that driving in cancun is INSANE. the drivers there are basically crazy. they’ll go as fast as possible at all times, and every driver is so aware of their car sizes that they’ll pass you with only inches to spare. chichen itza has been a life changer, so great. i second the person above me though - do it early early early because you’re in the actual jungle and the only place with air conditioning is the restaurant.

I just got back from Cancun 2 weeks ago and it was so amazing… you are going to have a terrific time. There is so much that we wanted to do and so much I wish we did… but if you get the opportunity and have never done it… swim with the dolphins and make sure you snorkel… There is so much to do, but just make sure that you take time to RELAX…

Miss Peppermint: Be sure to spend a day at the Xel-Ha ecological water park in Tulum–it is so amazing! (Just keep in mind that you have to buy their non-toxic sunscreen, and can’t bring in your own)

Also, wear a hat, especially while checking out the ruins :)

I loved reading about your honeymoon plans! I hope you had a fantastic time. My fiance and I are planning our honeymoon to the Yucatan. Unfortunately, we don’t have much time… only 5 days :( and we would like to enjoy both the beach and Mayan culture. Do you have recommendations for how we can make the best use of our time? Some of the places we’re interested in are Tulum, Chichen Itza, the cenotes (!), Merida, Valladolid, Playa del Carmen.

I checked out some of those hotels and they look fantastic! Thanks!

Hi Kate! I’m so excited for your upcoming trip to the Yucatan. If you’re looking for a mix of beach and Mayan Culture I think you should focus on Tulum (and maybe Chichen Itza, too!). Playa del Carmen is a bit more touristy and I think you could skip it. And Merida is more of a big city and has no beach. In Tulum you get the best of both worlds–you can visit the ruins (that are on the beach), relax in the quiet town (I think there’s only one street light) and you are close to cenotes. Chichen Itza can be a day trip (though I’d recommend staying the night to see the laser show). Hope this helps!! And happy honeymooning :)
