Read More Right Here

June 30th, 2007 @ 1:07 pm by Mrs. Bee

The site has been reverted back to its original state.  A follow-up post coming soon! :)

~~~
Hi everyone!
Just a quick update on a slight site tweak we’re experimenting with.  You used to be able to read an entire post on the same page by clicking “Read More Right Here” after the cut tag.  But because our frontpage has soooo much content, it was taking a really long time to load for a lot of our readers.  So we’ve eliminated the “Read More Right Here” option; now you have to click “Read the rest of this entry” and go into the individual post to continue reading it after the cut tag.
We’re really sorry if you were attached to that feature, but ultimately we’ll have a much faster weddingbee for everyone! :)
I have an unrelated question: What happened to Miss Sunflower? She hasn’t posted since November 06 and she’s now showing on the Mrs page of bees? Inquiring minds want to know! =)
2.
Mrs. Bee says:
She was just so far from her wedding that she hasn’t been blogging. Maybe she’ll pop in and say hello! :)
3.
Sarita says:
Oh, OK, I was confused that she was on the Mrs page! Thought she might have gone and eloped or something! :P
4.
Mrs. Bee says:
ah sorry bout that - she was there temporarily as we organize the mass of bees that have been/are getting married these weeks. :)
5.
kanipark says:
looks cleaner :)
Allison says:
I understand making the change, but I read weddingbee through google reader, and now it only shows the first part of the posts. I have to click through to read the rest. Any chance of creating an RSS feed that can show the whole posts?
7.
Mrs. Bee says:
ah allison - we will definitely look into that!
8.
wren says:
Diddo to Allison. Its muy inconvenient that the post doesn’t show up in one feed. Perhaps the alternative is to cut down on the number of posts on that appear on the front page?
9.
plumeriapal says:
Weddingbee has always loaded quickly for me so I’m a little confused why changes like this are made. You already cut down the number of posts that appear on the first page and you moved to a dedicated server. Am I missing something? Are there more people using dial up in the world than I originally thought?
Although I will miss the “read more here” feature, I do appreciate that you always have your readers best interests in mind! :)
10.
Arivechi says:
I miss that feature already. I don’t think it took me any more time to load a whole page of complete posts than if it was just the first paragraph. But if it’s best for other readers then I will happily live with the change.
heyjanety says:
i know that you’ve eliminated the previous feature to cut down on loading time. but i also, have found that weddingbee has loaded quickly for me too. i think the new way the entries are featured are kind of annoying. reason being, sometimes i want to read the rest of the entries without having to read the comments. and i’m not fond of having to click the back arrow to get to the rest of the entries on the page.
sorry to sound so complainy. i know you’re always trying to improve the site, but this is one “improvement” that doesn’t quite help.
but i still heart weddingbee.
12.
BB says:
Aww, I loved that feature–it loaded quickly and I could go right to the next entry without having to hit the back button. I agree–where are all these dial up users? I haven’t found it super annoying yet, but it’s definitely not an improvement, in my opinion.
Also–slightly related–any ideas why if I hit the back button after looking at comments it’ll scroll me past a couple entries? Am I the only one with that issue?
cccc says:
Would it be easier if we click on the “Read More Right Here” and it opens in a new window? I love the idea of fast loading page, but I just think it might be better to not hit “back” and wait for the main page to load again and again.
Now I just hold the “shift” button down when I click the link, so it opens in the new window ;)
Just an idea tho. I still love weddingbee!
hey allison - we’ve changed the rss feed to show the whole post!
for everyone else - we’ll try this out for a few days, and see how it goes? i know it’s not as convenient for people on fast connections… but we’re trying a few things to get the frontpage to load faster. hopefully over time, we’ll find a way to have a frontpage *and* the “read more right here” feature…
15.
lolacola says:
is there any way that when we click to read the rest of the entry it opens in a new window?? i understand losing the “read more right here” part but HATE having to hit the back arrow to return to the page with all the entries on them. . .
16.
Tessa says:
Yeah I’m not too fond of it, either. I’d like to hear feedback from the people with the slower connections - how big of a difference is it really making?
Still
Cortney says:
Ahhh! Too many more clicks…I don’t like it.
18.
n says:
I agree with the above posters. I’ve never had a problem loading and it’s inconvenient to have to push the back button - esp since sometimes I lose my place on the page!
Would it be possible to have both options? like a “read more right here” and “read more on another page” link? that way you can choose which one you want.
plumeriapal says:
Have you heard of this free web optimization tool? It analyzes your page load times. I ran weddingbee’s home page and it loads in less than 8 seconds for a 56K modem (dial up) which is good. When you design a webpage, you want to aim towards a less than 10 second load time for dial up users. Here’s the link:
http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/
Just some food for thought….
c says:
i’m lazy, and like other readers, i dislike using my “back” button if i don’t have to… so i’ve found that the change in format makes me less inclined to read everyone’s entries. =/ maybe it’s good in that i’ll “waste” less time on weddingbee… but i LIKE wasting time on weddingbee…
21.
Mrs. Bee says:
We have an update explaining the reasoning behind this coming soon. Please bear with us as we test this out this weekend to get some stats. :)
22.
Angie says:
I have to agree with the previous posters that I do not like it, but I understand the need for the change. :(
23.
CS says:
I hate this change….It’s so frustrating to have to click back and forth…I definitely won’t read a lot of the longer posts now - which are normally the best!
(sorry! Love weddingbee in general)
:)
24.
thea says:
i preferred it the way it was. it’s not as fast and easy to go back and forth between posts this way. you have to keep clicking and searching. but i understand trying to check out something new and see if it works better. i never had a problem loading anything the way it was, so honestly, i hope you switch back. :) (or find a way to do both as some suggested)
25.
Mrs. Bee says:
we’re definitely looking for a way to do both. :)
26.
Natalia says:
I really miss the ability to read the whole post “right here.” It was one of my favorite features of the website. I would so much rather wait a few extra seconds to have that feature stay. I end up reading so much less of the posts this way. Please consider putting it back. Thank you!
27.
Katy says:
Alright, I know enough people have expressed the same feeling as me, but I do want to back them up….cuz I liked the old way better. I just skimmed through the comments, but I didn’t notice anyone chiming in that this new feature helped them. Is there anyone out there that likes it better? Just wondering.
Even if you don’t switch back to the way it was, I’ll probably be a weddingbee junkie till way after my wedding has come and gone.
28.
BaghdadBride says:
Just adding to the list of people who dislike the change. That was one aspect i really disliked about other blogs (i.e. bridalwave) and I was always very appreciative of the “read more right here” feature on Weddingbee. I use to read every post even if I wasn’t 100% interested…now I just skip them cause I don’t want to go through the back/forth hassle. I’m not sure if people with a medium to fast connection are the majority or if people with super slow dial-up are the majority but whoever is I think we should go with what most people have.
29.
mee!! says:
just another reader who is not a fan of the change. hopefully, there’s an alternative method of helping out the slower loading readers without the rest of us lazies having to click back to get to the main page of posts??
30.
Darlene says:
wow- ditto to all the above. odd that none of the readers with slower connections have commented yet.
noooooooo… that was one of my absolute favorite things about weddingbee as a blog…
i have never had a problem loading weddingbee…
but I understand :)
33.
Jillian Kay says:
Awww Shucks! Now I can’t read the entries from bloglines. I’d love to see a separate rss feed with the full entries. :)
Thanks for continually working to make the site better!
34.
hoshi says:
nooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!! that was my favorite feature!!!! sniff sniff. =(
35.
LAGirl23 says:
I agree with PPs. It is taking me longer to load the new page now than the whole thing before. I don’t like the clicking back and forth. Weddingbee has never loaded slowly for me and I check in it on multiple computers.
Let’s go back!
36.
Ann says:
That was one of my favorite features too! Loading the entire new page does take me a longer time than it would for the material to appear on the original page, which would appear right away.
Also, I find that I don’t even read all of the entries anymore because of the nuisance of having to keep changing pages. Perhaps I am just lazy though!
37.
lilikoi says:
I understand the need to have things load quickly, but I think the feature is worth the slightly slower time.
I’ll be honest, but if I have to open up the whole tread in a new window it may lead to me skimming the threads more and not actually opening them up.
38.
thistleorchid says:
just adding my two cents of agreement - especially b/c when I hit the “blog” or “back” button to go back to the main page it puts me at the top of the page to which I need to scroll past things I’ve already read looking for the spot I left off on.
Too much clicking back and forth and I want to read everything, but this is time consuming :-(. I’ll be interested to see what the weekend experiment will be.
39.
hillary says:
Clicking back and forth between the whole post and the main page takes FOREVER - especially if you are catching up on a few days worth of posts! I loved the view right here feature, and this change has been frustrating me all weekend!
40.
Miss Popcorn says:
oh! I really miss the feature! didn’t you used to have the option of both “right here” and reading the rest on a post specific page?
41.
Allison says:
Thanks, Mrs. Bee - it’s working perfectly now in Google Reader!
42.
JM says:
Wow, a mass revolt! Please listen to these comments–bring back “read right here”! The slower connection people had the option to read on a different page. I want my read right here back!
43.
C says:
im sure you’re sick of the onslaught, but i have to agree w/ the others. i actually didnt comment right away because i did want to give the new feature a chance - but ive noticed that i dislike it enough to miss out on the entire post because, and excuse my extreme laziness here - but because im not curious enough about the post to go through the extra trouble. added trouble is that for me personally it does the opposite of its intention - it takes me much longer to get through the site and the posts w/ this feature. i hope you reconsider..
44.
Samantha says:
just adding my name to the list of those favoring the return of “read more right here.” It was super fast and easy for me, and I liked it alot! Thanks!
we knew you would hate it :(, but we’re just doing some testing for a couple of days. so please just bear with us….
46.
Candice says:
aw, wedding bee loads the same for me either way. thet way we’ve had it is much, much easier but if this has to be the new way, i guess it’s alright too…
47.
bethgraced says:
Thanks for all your hard work, Mrs. Bee, and for withstanding all the negetive feedback on the change. :)
I have to say that I was sad with the change, too, though. :(
48.
Vanessa says:
Let me add my name to the petition. I just breezed through the first page of posts because I didn’t want to take the time to go to a separate page to read a post. I’d rather just not read the post. Sorry!
49.
kandaceandjason says:
The first time I noticed the change I thought I had done something wrong. It now takes the new page more time to load than it did when I could finish it on the same page…
50.
plumeriapal says:
Thank you for switching it back, Mrs. Bee!!
51.
hoshi says:
sorry for the harassment. thanks for bringing the feature back. i appreciate you guys really trying to listen to your readers and for being nice at those of us (actually, just me) who gave you a hard time. i
