A Picture Is Worth…

July 2nd, 2007 @ 11:29 am by Mrs. Radish

… thousands of dollar, apparently!  Like so many other aspects of our wedding, we ended up totally changing our tune about photography.

At first, we said we didn’t want to spend more than $1,000 and I started looking around at the lower priced photography options in our wedding area. I was NOT impressed. I couldn’t see the point of spending even just $500 on pictures that we would probably hate and never want to look at again. Then I talked to my sister who got married a few years ago and her biggest regret was her photography. She only spent $800 on it but her pictures don’t look much better than the non-pro pictures from her wedding. Taking that into consideration, Mr. Radish and I decided to increase our budget on photography.

I started doing a ton of research and talking to some pros that I work with (I work at an art college) about the different options out there, and it sounded like we would be most happy with a wedding photojournalist. Then I found one that I loved! Tim Forbes from Kingston Ontario. Here are some of my favorite shots from his online portfolio:

Tim is a member of the Wedding Photojournalists Association, and I found him off of their website. If you are looking for a wedding photojournalist, this website is an excellent resource and lists all of their members by area. To be part of the WPJA, the photographers have to meet certain criteria and quality.

Mr. Radish hates posed photos anyway so he was very into this idea of having a photojournalist. The candid heartfelt moments from our wedding are probably what we want to remember years from now. Plus if I’m not happy with the lack of “posed” photos, I know a million photographers in Chicago who could do some bridal portraits after the wedding. And I should mention that Tim (as with most wedding photojournalists) does do some traditional, posed pictures. He just doesn’t spend as much time on it as a traditional photographer would.

Anyway, aren’t his pictures beautiful? I’m really excited to work with him. There is a certain tenderness in the way that he captures the emotions of his subjects that is very moving. His pictures also do a great job telling the story of the day. We are getting our engagement pictures done with him in a week, so I’ll be sure to post those as soon as I get them.

Though it’s more than I initially planned to spend, I must say that I feel we are getting a real bargain with Tim considering the talent that he has. Right now, we have the “Silver” package, which includes 8 hours of coverage, 300 prints, and an engagement shoot. I think we are going to upgrade to the “Gold” package for $3,500, which includes unlimited coverage, a disc of all the jpegs, more prints, a coffee table album, and a print credit.

When I start to think about it too much it seems totally insane that we are going to spend that much money on photography, but it’s worth it. The bottom line, I’ve learned, is that you have to pay someone for their talent. Working at an art college and being friends with a lot of professional artists has also helped me to realize that $3,500 is not really a large price to pay for artistic talent. And I think it is actually harder, in some ways, to do a good job capturing the candid moments and that’s what we really want. It really is a skill.

Not to mention, I am pretty sentimental person and I think I will want to look at these pictures for years to come. I always love looking at other people’s old wedding pictures, and I guess I have visions of our grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren looking at them years and years from now, so I really want them to be something special and to reflect who we are and what we feel for each other.

So, yeah, does that justify my tripling the photography budget? I hope so. :)

I’m curious - how far is your wedding from his city? Are you paying in Canadian dollars cause you’ll get a slightly better deal :)

3500 doens’t seem bad at all esp. you get a coffee table album, print credit and unlimited coverage. I think it was a wise decision! The way I look at it is this…people don’t remember the exact details, they don’t remember the food. What you will remember will be seen through photos and you want those photos to be in the best shape possible.

Kate — our wedding is in Syracuse, which is roughly 5 hours from NYC. The price I quoted is in American dollars.

Ah, I thought he was still in Ontario!

$3500 seems great for a NYC photographer. Ours was $2500 2 years ago and we didn’t get any albums (but I don’t regret our decision one bit, our photos are pieces of art which everyone raves about).

Hey Kate– oops, I’m sorry. He lives in Ontario, but he travels to New York state for slightly more than his Canadian prices. I think that he charges the same amount for any part of New York state, though… so I guess he would be just $3500 even in NYC. I suppose that is a pretty good deal, eh?

What photographer did you use, just out of curiostiy?

We used Angelica Glass, whom I know has been mentioned on here before. Her prices have increased since we booked her 2 years ago but are still extremely reasonable for what she does, she’s absolutely amazing.

that price is a steal for what you’re getting! i’m in LA, and paying much more for less. BUT, we’re definitely paying for our photographer’s style and artistry. sooo worth it!

We’re getting married in Napa. Our wedding photog is also of the photojournalist persuation, and like the reader in LA, we are also paying more for less. Don’t worry, you’re not really spending that much for great photography. Some of the quotes I got were up to $10,000! BTW, if anyone in Northern California is looking, my insanely fabulous photog is Augie Chang. Check out his site :)

Good decision. You will so not regret it! Of course I’m biased because our biggest splurge and meant a great deal to us, but you will truly cherish them afterwards. :)

Thanks for the link and story. Where in Syracuse are you doing the wedding? If you guys need photo ideas for places let me know - that’s where we shoot 90% of our weddings! :)

Matt —

Our church is St. Matthews in East Syracuse and our reception is at the Wellington House in Fayetteville. Have you ever been there? I think we might just do our pics at the Wellington. They have nice gardens and the house itself is very photogenic.

We are doing our e-pics at the Oakwood cemetary, though. Not in front of any gravestones, of course, but around some of the old buildings.

Do you know of any great places that we are missing out on? Or should we be fine with that?

We used a wedding photojournalist for our wedding and spent close to $3000. I should be getting my photos this week, but from what I have seen from her previous work, I know we’re going to be thrilled. We did some of the traditional posed group photos, but everything else was unposed and completely natural, which is what I’m most excited about. I think the candid photos truly capture the feelings of the day much better than posed photos.

Oh Kingston, not every far from where I am…. We totally spent more than what we thought we were going to on the photographer, but this is something I felt strongly about. The only thing I am walking away with from this wedding besides my Mr. Jellybeans are my pics and video…. so I thought it was worth every canadian penny… :)P

Miss Radish - on that (east) side of Syracuse you aren’t missing much. Thorndon is too crowded usually. All the other good stuff is north & north west (Onondaga Park, Onondaga Lake Park, Franklin Square, Clinton Square). Wellington House is beautiful! You should definitely enjoy their gardens and you’ll get fantastic photos there! I don’t think I have any photos on this harddrive from there though.

We last shot at St. Matthews August 26, 2006 with Father Clemente. Some photos:

Miss Radish, I know you already made a decision, however, I live in Sackets Harbor, NY (45 north of Syracuse on Lake Ontario). I am getting married in October and am using a photographer from Syracuse who I have found to be amazing. James Bass -www.jbassphoto.com He is priced really great and his work is amazing. I am paying 2,000 for 8 hours, a gorgeous coffee table album, CD with all pictures and ability to print, free engagement shoot. His work is unique- photojournalist style - and he is constantly in touch with you, keeps you up to date - I could go on and on. Just in case you are interested. Good Luck!
