Honeymoon In Paris, Days 2-3

July 3rd, 2007 @ 1:25 pm by Mrs. Bell Pepper

“Arrive early or you’ll never see the Mona Lisa!” That’s just some advice from a friend who visited the Louvre last year. So as recommended by Rick Steves and all of our friends who travelled around Paris, we trekked over to the Louvre at the butt crack of dawn, around 8:00 am. As we were walking there, we noticed that the streets of the city were pretty empty. There were several people heading to work, such as this stylish guy who strutted off to work listening to his iPod.

As we were getting closer to the Louvre, we were anticipating very large crowds waiting in lines and instead, we discovered a pretty quiet front all around the musuem.

z965770

It’s so early that the french troops haven’t arrived yet..

z965772

So quiet you could hear a pin drop..

z96577201

Inside the Louvre, there were so many lovely sculptures and the ceilings were so beautiful.

We loved the gold ceilings in the sculpture gallery areas.

You looking at me?

Looking into Napoleon’s Apartment, the Dining Room:

z969529

Such a lovely wallpaper design.

z96577001

My favorite painting at the Louvre, the Consecration of Napoleon and Coronation of Empress Josephine.

z96577204

As we were leaving the Louvre, the crowds started to build up.

z96577102

Outside the Louvre there is a very large garden with fountains; a lot of tourists and locals sat around and ate baguette sandwiches in this area.

z96577103

Hehe, this is exactly how I feel like at work:

z96952803

So many lovely sculptures around the garden.

z969525

Here’s a mini car with a slashed tire.

z96577002

We walked over to the Musee d’Orsay and discovered it was closed on Mondays!

z965769

We found an impressive line of sculptures here too.

z96577104

Next destination, the Arc de Triomphe! We decided to stop by a cafe for lunch and checked out the McDonald’s nearby. We discovered they sell french macaroons and tarts! The prices aren’t too bad but the quality isn’t as impressive as the ones from the local patisserie.

z96952804

The french love citrus in everything, here’s a Diet Orange Coke.

z96952901

The magnificent Arc De Triomphe!

z96576901

We had no idea we had to climb stairs all the way to the top! We were pretty exhausted at this point.

z96952501

We hopped back onto the tour bus and passed by the Eiffel Tower. Here’s Mr. Bell Pepper getting ready to devour up the entire tower.

A glimpse of one of the prettiest streets near the Cathedral of Notre Dame.

z96952504

I loved the street vendors near the cathedral. They sell a lot of souvenir items but you can also find a lot of antiques, old books, postcards, and original paintings here too.

z96952505

There’s just no room for SUVs in Paris..

z969524

z96952506

*Sigh*, there’s a lot of great shopping in the city!

z96952507

For dinner we booked two tickets for a boat tour and a 3 course dinner at the Eiffel Tower restaurant. The boat tour wasn’t all too impressive, we couldn’t see anything from the river level but we caught a glimpse of a lot of romantic couples sitting by the river.

z96952904

It’s about time for dinner! I was starving after the hour long boat tour..

z96577003A

Fois De Gras, it looks simple but it’s so rich and delicious!

Mr. Bell Pepper’s first course:

We finished dinner around 10:00 PM and the sun was just about to set! Photos taken from inside the Eiffel Tower structure:

z96952806

Mr. Bell Pepper took a photo of me waiting outside for the Eiffel Tower to sparkle.

z96577006

Every hour at night the Eiffel Tower sparkles for about 10 minutes, it’s definitely worth the wait!

z96577105

z96952702

I didn’t realize Mr. Bell Pepper took so many photos of me taking photos.

z96952703

We spotted a lot of carousels and ice cream shoppes in the city..

z96952704

We left the Eiffel Tower around 11:30 at night and the city was still very crowded. It’s true that Paris is a city that never sleeps! We headed back to the hotel and decided to catch up on sleep and wake up at a more decent hour the next morning, around noon sounds about right! :) Our next destination and events include the Musee d’Orsay, lots of local shopping and dining in the St. Germain area, and Fete De La Musique.

The Musee D’Orsay is my absolute favorite. I hope you got to visit the day after. Did you get a picture of the Mona Lisa? It was crowded when we went but I just waited a bit and scooted my way into the front. I snapped a pic and turned off the flash. Yumm all that food looks. Gosh I miss paris!!!

My absolute favorite restaurant in Paris is the ‘Enoteca’ in the Vème. Fabulous Italian food and a great wine list. It’s VERY romantic - be sure to ask for a table on the ground floor! The phone number is 01 42 78 91 44.

Miss Strawberry,

We loved a lot of the outdoor cafes in the area, you can’t go wrong with any of them! The great thing about Paris is that all of the menus are displayed just outside the restaurant, so you can see what you like and check out multiple menus before making a final decision. I like street food so I really loved the savory crepes and the baguette sandwiches. Mr. Bell Pepper prefers finer dining and he loved a seafood restaurant called L’arbuci, the website is http://www.arbuci.com.

Miss Snow Pea,

We were not allowed to take any type of photography, including non-flash, near the Mona Lisa. It was impressive but it was difficult to see any details because it was enclosed in a glass case. I liked the larger paintings such as the Consecration of Napoleon because you can walk up close and see all the brushstroke details.

I last visited Paris in 2004. Your entry makes me long to return. Did you make it to Basilique du Sacré-Cœur in Montmartre? It’s amazing, too.

Hey D, we wanted to see the Basilique du Sacre-Coeur but we decided to relax for the rest of the HM. We also planned Versailles but we decided to chill out in the city instead.
