Teach/Coach @ private schools in LA Engagement Date: March 31, 2006 Wedding Date: November 3, 2007 Venue: Radisson Hotel About Me: I'm a bookkeeper who failed high school algebra. I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!
About Mrs. Kiwi

Mr. Kiwi, The Visionary

July 3rd, 2007 @ 12:07 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

Yesterday Mr. Kiwi and I were talking about how to name the tables for our wedding, all 15 of them (not including our sweetheart table, which I think should be named “Paradise”). We began naming things off the tops of our heads, almost like coming up with new Weddingbee characters!

We started with different kinds of fruit, and the kiwi would be our table (not my idea), knowing that there is a ton of fruit out there! Then Mr. Kiwi came up with a bunch of nuts. I honestly think he was being serious, but can you imagine being sat at “filbert”? It’s like, oh yeah, I’m at “almond” and you’re at “filbert”- looooser. Then we decided that we just can’t name tables after nuts.

Next, we thought about herbs, after having been shown around my aunt’s garden full of mint and bay and cilantro. Herbs could work, but eh. They really have nothing to do with us. Then, Mr. Kiwi got the idea to do trees: oak, maple, ash, cherry, etc. You get the drift. I love this idea, but then realized our wedding is fall-themed and most trees don’t have leaves during fall. Mr. Kiwi, The Visionary : wedding los angeles seating tabletop Bummed bummed

Then, Mr. Kiwi came up with the idea of taking a picture of a leaf from every tree we have chosen, blowing it up on a sheet of thick cardstock, and then putting the name of the tree inside the leaf. Does that make sense? Then, we’ll use the tree names instead of numbers on a big chart- the guests can see what table they’re seated at.

This way, we won’t need to worry about some family members being insulted at being at table 15, instead of 3. :)

How are you marking your tables?

We’re doing table numbers with photos of each of us at that age. Table one will have photos of us as toddlers, 5 on our first days of school, etc. We’re hoping to avoid professional photos on there so it looks more casual. We hope it will also encourage people to move around and view other tables and at then encourage people to mingle more.

Miss Kiwi - this is what we are doing - I can send the artwork if you like. For the signs we have different leaves and their names, in silhouette printed on luxe cream paper in brown then mounted to a chocolate stock.

The holders are, if you can see this….wicker/grapevine balls - you can get them at Michaels, Jamali Gardens, etc. - which we glued to a grapevine napkin ring (to make the bottom flat) and cut, with scissors, a slit into the top of - then the signs slide, snug, into the slit. Its kinda earthy, kinda interesting - and took forever to come up with so please, feel free to steal!

We also did the votive holders with vellum for the escort cards - with the leaf and leaf name on them…

We haven’t decided yet..
Our options are:
Love in 19 different languages
19 Firsts such as…First Vacation together - Napa Valley, CA or First Date - xxx restaurant, Chicago, IL

or 19 places that we’ve traveled to or are planning to travel to

I don’t know if any of you have seen the documentary movie What the Bleep Do We Know. Well, in that movie there is a section that talks about water crystals and how they take on different crystal formations depending on what wish the water has been blessed with (you’d have to watch for this to fully make sense). Anyway, the crystals look like differently shaped snowflakes, they’re really pretty! So we’re going to name our tables after the wishes that the water have been blessed with and put a photo of the snowflake crystal formation on the table name sign. So we’ll have table names like Love, Gratitude, Peace, etc.

t, that sounds awesome. Nice work!

Miss Kiwi, you are giving me pleasant flashbacks to Best In Show when Harlan Pepper (Christopher Guest) has the delightful conversation with himself about naming nuts.

bb, that is Mr. Kiwi’s thought EXACTLY. He LOVES that movie. I feel there would be too many correlations with “nuts” and my family. :)

i never thought about the whole ’sitting at table 3 is more prestigious than sitting at table 15′…but that’s a great point to consider when determining how to mark your tables.

Brilliant! We didn’t do anything nearly as creative - we had regular table numbers, but they did match our wedding stationery and wedding colors :-)

Best wishes!

julie, that’s such a cute idea!

for anyone creating names for their tables, i would still suggest placing a corresponding number (on the corner or somewhere small), just for ease of guests finding their table. as a coordinator and a wedding guest, it’s still cumbersome to find the “love” table even with a diagram. but if i was looking for table 5 and saw table 6 and 7, i’d know to head toward that direction. it’s just good for functionality’s sake and ease of the guest experience. and yes, to avoid the bad feelings of not being seated in table 1 by some relatives, i actually purposely number tables just starting from one corner of the room, pretty much randomly, but with the purpose of keeping the numbers together. hope that helps!

I agree with dorothee that if you don’t specifically put table 1 near the dance floor and table 15 in the back corner no one will think anything of their table numbers. I would also highly recommend that if you use words instead of numbers you go in alphabetical order. It’s a huge pain finding the right table number in a big room, let alone tracking down a word when they’re not in any order at all.

Kate, we’re definitely doing it in alphabetical order, I once went to a wedding with placecards but no list of tables. It was confusing, to say the least.

My MOH and her now hubbers are both doctors and toyed with the idea of naming their tables after diseases!

We’re going to be doing our favorite resturaunts. We were thinking about the difficulties finding the tables, so we’re doing the following to help people along:

1. We’ll have two table charts set up, so people can see where their table is.

2. Ushers (and maybe GM) will also be on hand to help the guests

3. We’re going to have the tables of resturaunts in Chicago (where we live) closest to the main doors, and as you head through the ballroom, the resturaunts will be from farther away (first Chicago, than Illinois, then Midwest, then the coasts, and finally our favorite resturaunt in Costa Rica).

Do you think that’s enough?

Jessica, I think it’s enough- totally! Maybe you could explain it on the charts? Like, “think of the room as a map, find your table according to the area!” Or something, my brain is already on 4th of July time!

We’re naming ours after famous chefs. Anthony Bourdain, Julia Childs, Bobby Flay, Gordon Ramsay, etc, etc…(Fiance is a chef, and I’ve grown to love cooking even more than I did before I met him since we’ve been together, so we have a food theme thing going…)

But I’m really glad Dorothee made mention of the issue of people having a hard time finding their table in those sorts of set-ups. I’ll have to consider working on a chart of some sort, or just doing the alphabetical thing to make it a bit easier…

When my hubby and I renew our vows and finally have our big wedding we are naming our tables after comic book superheroes! My DH is an aspiring comic book artist. We attend the big convention every year here in San Francisco. He’s been to the one in Chicago and used to go to the one in San Diego. I can’t wait till we go together to the one in San Diego.

My cousin did a fall-themed wedding last year and used cutouts of leaves with the name of the table (named after trees) on the left. She had a really cute display for the escort “leaves” in that she had a good size log lying down on the table and all the leaves were pinned into the log. It was verrrry cute and lots of fun to find your tree!
