This Bee’s Budget

July 3rd, 2007 @ 9:31 am by Mrs. Corn

Ok Bees, I have a confession to make. I have no idea what our wedding budget is. Before we were engaged, you know, back when I was trying to figure out what was taking Mr. Corn so long to decide I was the one for him, I tried to bribe him by suggesting we could hold a $5,000 wedding. He popped his eyebrow at me and remained quiet.

Once we were engaged we tried to realistically discuss our budget, I think the number $10,000 did come up at some point. Of course, prior to confirming that number we needed to figure out how many people we would be inviting. Originally, we both wanted something small, around 70 guests tops. But soon after getting engaged, Mr. Corn’s parents took us to a celebratory dinner and before I knew what had happened (and after a bottle of expensive champagne) we somehow had agreed to 120 guests!

Mr. Corn and I live in the city of Boston and I attend church in Cambridge. It became apparent very quickly that hosting a wedding in Boston or the immediate area would be very cost prohibitive if we went with our initial desire to host a fun, inviting party for our family and friends, so we started looking outside the city. We also thought, erroneously, that by having the wedding ceremony and reception outside we would save big bucks, but I can tell you that tents and rentals add up just as quickly as banquet fees and room rentals. So that didn’t help us save, either.

Finally, because we are a bit older and most of our friends are already married, we felt very strongly that we wanted to provide the best event that we could handle for the people in our lives who have supported us in so many ways throughout the years. But this didn’t solve the issue of figuring out exactly what the budget was.

Once the clambake option was finalized and we determined exactly how much the catering was going to cost, we built our budget around that. But instead of following the many budgets that you see on the Knot or in wedding magazines, we have just let it build itself; spending more in some areas and less in others. We still have a ballpark number in our head, and when it is all over we will sit down and figure out how much it all came out to be…but for us, at this time in our lives, it was more important to provide an event that really represented us.

With that said, I would like to point out that our not-really-having-a-budget does NOT mean that we are throwing all caution to the wind and ordering up everything we can think of. Mr. Corn and I are fairly low key people (in our eyes…my sister will tell you otherwise icon_wink.gif) so our non-budgeted wedding is going to come in significantly lower than a big budget, crazy-go-nuts wedding.

Anyway, once the dust has settled and the numbers finally come in, I have no issues with sharing with the Bee what it all works out to. For now, you will have to be satisfied with our ballpark number; $30K. If we were to take bets on this…I think we may end up coming in around $32.5K. I’ll be sure to keep you posted.

Our budget process was very similar. Going into planning we had no idea how much things would cost so it was nearly impossible to budget for specific things. With each thing (venue, officiant, etc.) we just tried to find the thing that was closest to what we wanted and didn’t seem outrageously over priced. Luckily we had enough non-traditional tastes that the most expensive, wedding-ish thing didn’t really appeal to us and the option we wanted was cheaper (for example instead of a wedding band we really wanted this swing band that usually plays local clubs instead of weddings).

This is very very similar to what happened with us. My first idea was to just “elope,” or do something along those lines, with the plan of spending 5k. Then my FMIL insisted that we have an actual wedding here and offered us another 5k. We (wrongly) assumed we could have a wedding in South Florida for $10,000; we quickly realized that wasn’t going to happen when 1. she continued to add to the invite list and 2. we realized that the cost of the food/reception venue alone would come to 10k.
We’re still 8 months away and it looks like now we are closer to spending about 25k altogether!

Hi Miss Corn,
I think we’re in a similar situation…a little older, wanting something a little less “traditional” etc. Mr. Cranberry and I are getting married on the Cape, and after realizing how insanely expensive (and labor intensive) it is to do something with a tent (or in our case, at a museum)…we came across the lovely Captain Linnell House in Orleans. It’s beautiful, and really, a great deal. We’re having a short engagement, so we booked close to our wedding date. With the late booking discount (20%), daytime affair, the price came in at $96 per person…including the cake, alcohol and all food. DJ, $775. You can get married on site for an additional, nominal fee ($300 maybe?) Also, the place is really pretty, and needs minimal flowers/decor added. I’d recommend this as an option for all Boston-ites!
Congratulations to you, and good luck!
Miss Cranberry

Our process was similar too - we didn’t follow the “suggested” percentages of our budget for each part of the wedding.

We started by pricing out several reception places where we’d be getting married, picked the one that was affordable/we liked best, then went from there, pairing that with what we could afford, and any help we were getting from parents.

We’ve got a ~$14k budget (thats all expenses, including the photo/dj my parents are paying for)

What we spent on some things was way less than the percentages they give in magazines — i.e. my dress was only $450 on sale (some sources suggested 10% — which would have meant $1400 on a dress) — we’re only spending $400 on flowers (suggested 8% = 1120), because the reception already has centerpieces.

Wow. It’s true, the “simple outdoor clambake celebration” is actually quite expensive! I thought it would come out to more than $25K for 85 people on Long Island, and that was a guess.

You’re going to have an amazing wedding, though, Miss Corn. You are, BTW, going to serve corn on the cob, right? You have to! ;)

Hey Miss Corn,
Thanks for sharing. Before we got engaged my (now) FI, best friend and I were talking about how much a wedding cost. When I said I thought you could do something nice for $10,000, they both started laughing at me. Which is not to say you CAN’T do one for that price, you probably just need to be pretty savy and get others pitching in to help. Our current budget is 20K… but I think when all is said and done we’ll be closer to $25. Reading all these budget posts is making me feel much better about going over, I guess it’s pretty common.

Also, Miss Corn, for Newport you’re doing darn good!
