Candy Girl, You Are My World!*

July 5th, 2007 @ 1:20 pm by Mrs. Pumpkin

As you may recall I was having a hard time deciding how to display the lollipops and rock candy sticks in our candy buffet. While there were some fantastic suggestions of where to buy test tube type displays in the comments of my previous post, I just could not justify spending another $50 or so (plus shipping to Canada) on racks that I would likely never use again, and so another DIY project was born!

In Regina we have a lovely store called Gale’s Florist and they sell everything crafty at wholesale prices if you have an account. Luckily for me, Papa Pumpkin’s work has an account and so Momma Pumpkin and I bought almost everything that we used to decorate the wedding from Gale’s including almost all of the jars we used to display the candy buffet. We found the perfect square vases to display the rock candy sticks in, and so I left the sticks in the wrapper and stood them up in the vases and it looked great! Unfortunately I don’t have a great picture of that for you but I am hoping that when I get my professional pics back there will be a close up of the candy display.

The other problem I had was how to display the lollipops. I wanted them to stand up in some fashion so Momma P and I went to Gale’s in search of planter’s foam or styrofoam and a long glass vase to put the foam in. What I came home with was 2 smaller rectangle plastic trays and rectangle pieces of styrofoam. Mr. P spray painted the trays brown and I cut the styrofoam pieces down so that they would fit into the tray and then we stuck the lollipops in the trays in alternating rows so that the lollipops were staggered in a nice even display. Again, I don’t have a picture of that specifically but here are a couple of non-pro pictures of our candy buffet. The second one shows our Love Is Sweet sign hanging above the tables!

My BFF Jill enjoying the lollipops!

Would you mind sharing how much candy you purchased, how many guests were in attendance, and how much candy you had left over at the end of the night? I can’t seem to find concrete numbers anywhere!

Lovely display, by they way :)

I don’t understand the use of a Candy Bar at a wedding.
Unless there are many children attending,
I find this a poor use of ones budget.
It’s not a sweet 16 after all….

Miss Newport,

Love is sweet. To get your guests in the mood for sweet, what better way than to give them sweets? For us, the candy buffet will replace “trinket” favors that would most likely be thrown away, if they ever even made it out of the reception room. As we are doing only candy in our wedding colors, it’s another creative way to decorate the room. And, as everyone knows I’m a “sucker” for candy and such, it’s another way to make our wedding that much more unique to who we are.

I happen to believe this is a much better use of funds than an elaborate floral design or string quartet. Sure, those things are “pretty” but the candy is an interactive way to make guests feel like kids again, allowing them to remember the sweeter times in their lives, overall leading to a more casual atmosphere of nostalgia and love.

Candy Buffets are just fun! And believe me, there will be plenty of adults with sweet tooths that will enjoy it!

Miss Newport - My Mom couldn’t understand it either but I knew it would be a hit. We had an adult only reception and the candy was almost gone by the time that we made our grand entrance at the end of the cocktail hour! It is absolutely fun and everything that Kandace said above. It might not be right for you but it was a very successful addition to my wedding and to countless others.

Kandace - I will try to put together a list of what I used and costs etc for you in the next couple of days. To tell you the truth I haven’t even opened the boxes to see what is left, so your question will force me to get on that!

We had a candy buffet at our wedding a couple of months ago - and I am STILL getting comments about it…everyone, young and old loved it!

We had Coca-Cola Bottle gummies, jelly beans, Hershey’s Kisses, sugar-free grape & rootbeer flavoured candies (my MIL is diabetic) and Scotch Mints.

Candy Bar???

My advise to brides is to be a trend setter, not a trend follower.

Less is more, quality over quantity, tradition over trend.

Its hard to tell the difference between a Sweet 16 and a Wedding these days.

Do these fun things at the rehrusal dinner not your wedding.

I realize this is way belated but Miss Newport you really come off as a party pooper. Learn to spell before you condescend. Learn to accept before you advise.
