Mrs. Gummi Bear's Picture
Mrs. Gummi Bear, San Francisco Age and Occupation: 25, Japanese Importer/Illustrator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Game Developer/Programmer Engagement Date: April 15, 2006 Wedding Date: October 13, 2007 Blogging Since: June 19, 2007 Venue: Organic farm an hour from San Francisco About Me: I live for anthropologie, design blogs, sweets, japanese zakka, and vintage goods. We just bought our first home together and live with our two puppies and cat - it's a strange mixture of vintage, high-tech (we have 7 computers and 21 video game systems in all), and a whole lot of fur. About Mrs. Gummi Bear

So we went over to our invitation designer’s home and picked up our STDs. It’s so nice to be able to go over to her house and chat over these things, it makes it feel like we’re really getting to know each other and less like a business transaction. We immediately went to work buying a few supplies at Paper Source and Blick: paper, envelope liner templates, exacto knife, self healing mat, and some double stick glue.. tape… thing. It’s nifty. I found the people at our local Paper Source to be… really pretentious and unpleasant. They had a very bad attitude and made me feel like I was wasting their time for not being nearly as craft-knowledgable as them. I went to art school, so having people talk down to me about glue is really off-putting, so we got only what we needed at Paper Source and went to Blick for the rest.

Anyway, we sat down and got to work:

Dorky space invader paper for our game-industry pals, and two other kinds for friends and family… the brown for the less pink-appreciative. It was quick, painless, and really something nice that we did together.

Mr. Gummi Bear and I made two versions, since it was cheap to do - a family version and a friend version. This is the latter:

On a sadder note, while we were on vacation in Japan earlier this year, my pet rabbit that had been with me since high school passed away… traumatizing our neighbor who was watching him for us. He was very very old, so I’m not depressed - I’m just glad he lived as long as he did and looked as cute through the whole thing. In honor of our little boy, we wanted to have stamps of him made for the envelopes. This photo was taken a few months before he left us, and he still looked like a baby bunny.

Zazzle.com was having a sale, so we went with them. They have a smaller stamp size as well, which I like, since I didn’t want to overwhelm the envelope with a gigantic picture of my rabbit. They were higher quality than I expected - thick and nice. We had talked about having our rabbit be a part of the wedding, but he didn’t make it, so instead at least he’s plastered on all the envelopes in a slightly morbid but cutely commemorative way!

Where did you get the Space Invader’s paper? My boyfriend would get a kick out of that!
I love the bunny stamps.

I also have found some of the staff at our local Paper Source a bit rude and condescending. I went in there at least 20 times before our wedding, and I know they knew my name because they stopped asking when ringing up my order, but they never said hi or even smiled when I came in. I pretty much won’t shop there now because of it, and luckily a few other cute paper places have opened in our city.

- The paper is from whimsy press! they have an online webshop and have incredibly cute paper. It was just luck that I had it around because I have a wrapping paper buying obsession.

- I really just a sour feeling when I look at the paper source closest to me now. :( It’s too bad - I often side on the side of the store because I feel like customers can be unreasonable or demanding, but in this case, a simple question about the proper glue to use was just turned into a “this girl is retarded” attitude and that slow, condescending ennunciated speech that I usually hear when people assuming I’m not a native English speaker. :(

I’m sorry to hear that about Paper Source. I love them, but I only have ever used the website and catalog, although I’ve chatted with them by email. We don’t have their shops in New York, I think because we have Kate’s, which is too bad, as they don’t have half as much in the way of crafty things. I like Kate’s, but I wish we had Paper Source too.

Love the STD’s! And that you did three different envelope liners and your own stamps. I customized my invitations in several ways, one being envelope liners. Think they make a big difference. I’m going to do it with my (Paper Source) thank you notes, too.

I just want to say that you’re making me want to get the envelope lining template. Damn you, Weddingbee and your tantalizing treats.

On another note, so sorry to hear about your bunny, it’s always hard when it happens while you’re gone. :(

Mr. Kiwi would KILL for Spaced Invaders. He’d go MAD.

That Space Invaders envelope liner is full of win. If I got that as a guest, I’d be squealing with delight and you’d have an instant wedding RSVP. XD

I also love that little touch because your fiance is a game designer. Nice little nod to the boy, there. :)

Heh. No, I’m not a die-hard gamer at all… ::whistles::

Your save the dates are really great. I like the way your return address is printed on the envelope flap. Did you run that through a printer or is it a stamp?

I’m so sorry to hear about your bunny. He is a sweetheart - I think it’s lovely that you used a photo of him for your stamps. I was not going to bother with personalized stamps, I thought it was a waste of money, but the one thing that could sway me would be to do a stamp featuring a photo of our dog from the engagement photos! We’re heartbroken that our venue doesn’t allow dogs so we can’t have her in the ceremony, so I’m looking for any other way to include her in our wedding.

I love the “be there if you know what’s good for you” line. I’m might tweak that for my RSVP’s…hehe

i love the space invaders paper!

i know what you mean about paper source people. which branch did you go to? i found that the one in pasadena has nicer people.

i actually made my own template just with thicker cardstock paper. so if you all don’t wanna shell out mulah for the papersource kind, you don’t have to. just trace your envelope onto cardstock and cut off 1/8 or 1/16″ of the 2 parallel sides. then you measure where you want the lining to end to allow for the glue and cut that measurement off the bottom (usually 1/2″).

oh and that bunny is sooo cute! way to involve him.

vicki: it’s a rubber stamp! we learned quickly that those go on last as they smear if not left to dry for a fairly long time.

aoedorothee: We went to the one in Berkeley - there is another in San Francisco, but I haven’t had a reason to go back since then!

Miss Kiwi: the paper is from Whimsy Press! At the very least, you can always just buy it for the next time you need to wrap a gift, right? And the envelope template was SO easy, I’m really someone who would rather sell a kidney to pay for an easy out than diy - but this was a really fast and easy project!

I also have had negative experiences with Paper Source. Not only are they snooty, I took a calligraphy class there and it was a total ripoff. For anyone wondering, just buy a calligraphy book because you’d probably get more out of it than their overpriced (babysitting) class.
It’s really a shame that everyone goes there only because there are no other really options.
Your STDs are really cute! Great job!

Hi Miss Gummi Bear!!

This is so weird, but your bun looks EXACTLY like my tiny Netherland Dwarf (eve. He’s four right now, but he still looks just like a baby. I love him sooo much; they really do capture hearts, huh? I’m so sorry to hear about yours and I think the stamps were a great idea.

I always think it’s hilarious when store clerks get all snobby– I mean, for heaven’s sakes, you’re a *store clerk*, not a British lord or something. But glue snobs take it to a whole new level!

So sorry about your bunny– he was so cute!

Wait. So you got a rubber stamp with your names on it! That’s so cool! Is the bird part of it too or is that a separate stamp? What a great idea. Where did you get it/have it made?
Congrats on a great job. Everything looks really nice and fun. Too bad about the store clerks. Why are they like that? I don’t get it.
