Rock DJ*

July 5th, 2007 @ 6:54 pm by Mrs. Pumpkin

One of the coolest and most spontaneous things that happened at our wedding was the guest DJ phenomenon. We had rented sound equipment and then created playlists for various times throughout the night (cocktail hour, dinner, dance). We had my very good friend and her husband (who had played music this way at weddings before) sort of looking after it all night and changing the playlists when needed etc. Later in the night though, after we had put on the wedding dance playlist and my friend and her husband had left the post, we started having guest DJs appear! First was one of my cousins, then another cousin, then my two brothers! It was great! At first I was nervous (especially because the first cousin to step up there was only 15) but they kept the party hopping and the dance floor filled all night!

If you wanted to you could actually plan that out and ask different people to step into the DJ seat at various times throughout the night! Make sure that you trust their musicality though - nobody wants to hear Smack My Bitch Up on their wedding day.

this is a cool idea - so, will you elaborate (please) on your set-up? i’d just planned on having an ipod set up to some speakers, but you’ve got the laptop situation. did you consider going another route? what made you decide to use the computer?

Okay I *finally* convinced my fiance to get a DJ because I am being a bit control-freakish over the music list at the wedding and I’m really afraid of the wrong songs being played at the wrong time. But you are making me think that maybe it would be okay to do our own music :) With a little bit of confidence since DIY music has been a success for you, and maybe a side dish of chill pills, maybe I could do this. It would certainly free up a few hundred bucks so we could add a few more guests…

I guess really, if we just don’t have any songs downloaded on the computer that we definitely don’t want played, it shouldn’t be a problem if we get some keen guest DJ’s eh?

On a sidenote, I nearly died laughing this morning when I read on another wedding blog that someone’s DJ played “Sexual Healing” when it was time for the parents of the bride & groom to dance. THAT would never happen if you do your own music…

Hi all,
I am not going to have the right terminology here but I will try to explain what all we had. For $60 we had two large speakers on stands, a microphone and the mixing box that you plug everything into. We had created the playlists in iTunes on our laptop, which works exactly the same as an iPod, and plugged it into the mixing box. We used the laptop instead of an iPod so that we had a bigger screen to look at and frankly, I felt that the laptop was more reliable than an iPod. I don’t know why I felt like that but I did.

We did consider a DJ but we (like you Laura S) are control freaks and had very specific ideas about what music we wanted played and when and what better way to control it than to do it yourself, right?

My only warning to those of you considering doing your own music is to beware of the huge amount of time it takes to plan an entire day of music! It took us many evenings and many revisions of our list to feel like we had it good enough to just let it play by itself. Of course, all of that work sort of went out the window when the guest DJ’s showed up :)

Good luck!
