Oh Italia! Love, love, love Roma! Try the Scavi tour, under St. Peter’s at the Vatican. Just enter “scavi” on the Vatican website. That, and the Villa Borghese appointments, fill up very fast. ContextRome is an interesting and scholarly *tour* company that operates more like a private tour.

Perhaps during your final four days in Rome you can hop a local train to Orvieto for a day trip. It’s in Umbria and one of the smaller and less-touristy hill towns. Filled with charm, every single inch.

I’m a huge history buff and always wanted to visit Pompeii. Wish we had organized a private guide and scheduled two days (I know, remember the history nerd part) as it’s a huge area to cover. Herculaneum is said to be smaller, easier to cover in one day and much less touristy.

Hope you have a lovely, romantic time on your honeymoon.

Oh. My. G*d. That’s a lot to do in a little amount of time. I’m going to make the following Venice suggestions, though: Skip the glass-blowing. It’s mildly interesting, but not worth the time/high-pressure sales tactics. Do see a Vivaldi concert in an old church. it doesn’t matter which one (they happen everywhere, it seems). You will be completely overcome with it all. Have a wonderful honeymoon!!

Ditto Lucy on skipping the glass tour. I know you only have one day in Firenze (Florence), but definately try to get up to the Piazza Michaelangelo. The absolute most stunning view of the city, especially at sunset. If you’re at the train station you can take the #12 or #13 bus there. Ciao Bella!

We got back from a ten-day trip to Rome, Capri and towns along the Amalfi Coast. I highly recommend not hurrying back to Rome after your tour. You’ve only scratched the surface of how beautiful the Amalfi Coast is when you’re in Sorrento. Take the bus to Amalfi (the view is incredible and the bus ride is crazy) and then take the ferry from Amalfi to Positano. Spend a night in Positano and try to get a hotel room with a view of the ocean. Then take the ferry to the island of Capri; when you’re in Capri, get past the fancy shops and go hiking around the island. It’s incredible!

If you are into food - or anyone else going to Italy, for that matter, you have to find the slow food guide. The slow food mvmt. started as a reaction to the proliferation of fast food, and they publish a guide where they pick the places that best represent the regional cooking in each city. There are lots of expensive places, but lots of inexpensive dives too, and it’s a great way to ensure you don’t get stuck in tourist traps. My fiance and I always go to Italy with no itinerary and then make a plan once we’ve bought the slow food guide! One thing - it IS in Italian, but I don’t speak Italian and I was fine. The listings describe how expensive the place is, recommended dishes (I think those are in italics), and of course, address and phone number. And it’s divided by cities and regions, which is very handy. It’s very hard to buy outside of Italy, so I would look when you are in a bookstore once you’re there! Happy eating!

They make the slow food guide in English now, I ordered it off the website before we went to Italy. We just went for our honeymoon– 10 days– 3 nights in Rome, 3 nights in Orvieto (Umbria, which I highly, highly recomend!) 2 nights in Padua, and our last night in Venice. We flew into Rome and worked our way up towards Venice, which we flew out of. Perhaps your going on a tour which is why you’re packing so much in, I did tons of research off Tripadvisor.com and planned our trip ourselves. We weren’t rushed and to really experience Italy you need to spend more than one day in a place, also we wanted to get to a place and unpack instead of living out of a suitcase! Rome is AMAZING– try to stay by the Spanish Steps, that is the best area of Rome. But be warned on your tour you’ll be spending a lot of time traveling (the train to Venice from Rome is over 5 hours)– I do wish we would have spent more than one night in Venice– it was GORGEOUS! But relax and have fun and eat eat eat!

My fiance and I are planning our trip right now for our honeymoon in April 2008 in Italy. We will be there 13 days. The only thing we have at this moment is our airline tickets to and from Rome. We plan on visiting Rome, Pompeii, Venice, Florence and San Guisto (Were my great grandparents and great great grandparents were born and raised). Searching internet and researching places to go and see, can’t wait!!!

Be careful in Naples!!! It’s super dangerous, and the cab drivers will try to scam you at every opportunity. Stand your ground about where you want to go and negotiate the fare in advance…I just went on a Mediterranean Cruise last month for my honeymoon and I have nothing good to say about Naples.
Venice is incredible (if you can be there at sunset, it’s breathtaking.)
Eat gelato wherever you can!

Your itinerary sounds fantastic, have a good time, wear good walking shoes!!! I hope you get great pictures :)

You’re going to LOVE Italy!! I got married there two years ago and spent our honeymoon there (seeing as we were already in the neighbourhood - tee hee!) and in southern France.

Italy is the best.

We got married there and have gone back for our 1st and our 2nd anniversaries. :)

Have a great time!!

Cheers,
Crissy

AWESOME trip!! I went to Rome last year for 5 days and hit a ton of spots. If you want to sightsee, I suggest planning your days around locations. For instance, we wanted to go to Campo Di Fiori in Rome, so we planned the day around walking there and seeing other hot spots in that area. That way we weren’t zig-zagging back and forth across the city.

Also suggest doing a guided tour of something - we chose the Vatican. We did it through Context Rome and had the tour guide Hilary, she was phenomenal. http://rome.contexttravel.com/main/home/ (Watch out for “enjoy rome” - we booked another tour through them and they canceled without telling us!)

Christine Mary, I recommend flying “open jaw” which means you fly into one city and then fly out of another city back home. This allows you more freedom and you don’t have to rush back to your final destination. Just a thought.

Also go buy Rick Steve’s travel guides- they are fantastic and soooo helpful!!
