Beautiful Day*

July 8th, 2007 @ 4:37 pm by Mrs. Pumpkin

Like most brides-to-be, I was determined to look my best on my wedding day so over the past year I tried out countless different beauty products. Often I was unimpressed, a couple of times I was pleasantly surprised but these two were the most noteworthy.  And so I present to you, dear readers, my very first (two) product reviews! Do you want the good news or the bad news first?  I will start with the good news because I would rather help advertise GO SMILE than Veet so let’s put their picture on the site first! (See, my psychology degree was worth it! I remember the concept of primacy very well and am applying it in real life!)

I haven’t always had great teeth - I had a short 6 month stint with upper braces in grade 6, but I have been pretty lucky overall. I don’t drink coffee or smoke and my teeth have always been pretty white, but over the past 4 years or so I have noticed some yellowing in the teeth in the corners of my smile. Since it wasn’t really the whole mouth that I was concerned about, I thought I would try a brush-on type of whitener so that I could concentrate on the teeth that needed the most whitening, rather than use a whitening strip which would blanket the whole front of my mouth and miss the corners that needed the help. Plus, I had tried whitening strips before and they were messy and annoying to wear for a half hour and the gel was hard on my gums. I liked the idea of just brushing on the whitening formula and then going about my day, only not drinking anything for a half hour after each application. However, that did make me skeptical about the whitening power of the brush-on systems; how well could it work if it is being washed away and diluted every time I swallow?

The answer is that it worked amazingly well! I bought the GO SMILE “Go All Out Starter Kit with Advanced Formula B1″ from Sephora and started using it 1 week before the wedding. I noticed a difference after the first day and it just got better from there! I love the little tubes because they are so easy to just throw in your purse or pocket to use whenever it is convenient for you to apply the formula. They also included a small carrying case so that you can take several tubes with you at one time if you wish. There was also no problem with my gums since I controlled where the formula goes. The only thing that I found slightly annoying was that the brush end of the tube is pretty stiff. I usually would spend a couple of seconds before I broke the ampule open, softening up the brush so that it would work better. But what is 3 seconds, right? Totally worth it for the results that I experienced. GO SMILE worked just as it said it would, it was easy, convenient and well worth the money, in my opinion.

The second product that I tried was the Veet In-Shower Hair Removal Cream.

Luckily I did not try it on a day where I needed to wear a short skirt because this product did not work for me at all! I was compelled to try it by their claims of easy, quick hair removal that lasted for weeks, so several days before the wedding I crawled into my tub and applied the cream as per the instructions. I have fairly thick hair so I left the cream on for the maximum time (but no longer), started the water and then scrubbed my legs with the supplied sponge at the end of my shower. After all of that my legs still had patches of hair and the parts that were clean were stripped of skin as well and were very sensitive. There was no easy, quick hair removal! By the time I had shaved off the patches I had spent more time than I would have just shaving my legs in the first place, and I still had to shave again after 3 days. So much for using this to get through my 2 week honeymoon! I was disappointed by this product and would not spend my money on it again.

Have any of you tried any products that either exceeded your expectations or let you down terribly? Does anyone want to redeem Veet’s reputation with a good review of the product?

Bono,

I HATE Veet! It did take off my hair, but it also took off my skin. Youch!

I’m excited about your results with Go Smile though, sounds great!

I’ve tried Veet before and was not impressed. My hair is not that thick, I followed the directions exactly, and did not have smooth legs afterward!

The Veet foam works a little better, but not much. But, what Veet does to you legs is nothing compared to he havoc that Nair will cause… that stuff just plain hurts!

I’m curious about Veet’s ready-to-use wax strips (with the wax on the strip already, just stick it and peel)… anyone try these yet?

I’ve used Nair and I hated it. I was hoping for something to use on the bikini area that wouldn’t cause redness/irritation. Unfortunately, nothing came off and it had a lingering funky smell. I was not impressed.

I’m really happy to hear about Go Smile. I’ll have to pick some of that up for my fiance and I. Thanks for the tips.

I’ve tried Nair and Veet, both the creams and the waxing strips, but I’ve been blessed with very pale skin and very dark hair. :(

I’d recommend an epilator - personally I don’t have the time or money for professional waxing. I researched them a bunch on Amazon.com and I’ll admit my first use hurt like crazy, but now I can go more than a week without shaving! And, it doesn’t hurt any more. ;-)

Thanks, Mrs. Pumpkin! I think I’ll look into the GO SMILE stuff, too. :)

inaya says:

ugh, veet. i hated that stuff too. and the first time i tried it, i went swimming after, so the chlorine in the pool stung. i use an epilator, too–best $60 investment i made.

i’ve tried the veet gel that comes with a thing shaped like a razor but without the blade. it didn’t hurt my skin at all, but it didn’t get all the hair either. i still had to shave some spots afterwards, but the two things together seemed to last longer than just shaving. and i’ve never heard anything good about nair.

i’m excited to hear that gosmile worked so well! I’ve been wanting to try it for awhile, but wasn’t sure if it would be worth the money. sounds like it will be. thanks for the review! :)

Go Amie says:

Emily - can you tell us which brand/model of epilator you went with ultimately? I’ve been thinking of getting one for a while…

Miss Gummi Bear says:

we are both trying the go smile right now :) It sounds like it works, so I’m glad we put the money down and decided to do it!

Ugh, hair removal is such a pain! I’m booking 2 laser hair removal sessions before the wedding, totally expensive, but in the end (all the time, $, effort and frustration saved) hopefully worth it!

Mary says:

boo to Nair & Veet. I’ve tried both and they not only smell really bad, but they burn. I’ve been doing laser hair removal for my underarms since last November and it is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Once I’m finished I’ll probably do my legs. It is quick, not really that painless, and the results are unbelievable! I would definitely recommend trying laser hair removal.

Thanks for the review of go smile! I look at it every time I am in Sephora and always put it back….now I might just give it a shot!

aylee says:

The lotion type hair removals don’t work for me. There were always hair left. I tried Veet, Nair, and Sally Hansen. Sally Hansen worked best.

I currently shave or wax (when I have the money to spare). I’m looking to try the epilator. Anybody recommend a brand?

Buffy says:

Laser hair removal is wonderful! It definitely took more than one blasting session, but I no longer have to pluck my eyebrows every day! Please be sure you leave enough time before the wedding for your skin to calm down if it is sensitive, and recognize that it takes at least 2 (if not 4 or 6) sessions to get rid of all the hair.

But I seriously could see myself spending lottery-winning type money on getting de-haired. None of the Veet type products have ever had a satisfactory result for me and I don’t like the re-growth period with waxing.

Glad to know the Go-Smile works.

i have the braun silk epi, and i love it. keep in mind, the first couple of times you use it you will think of it as your new torture device. my fh calls it “the ripper”…. however it’s the best product ever! i’m totally desensitized to it now and it keeps the hair away for a long time. plus it grows back thinner.

Alexis says:

I tried Nair before and I think the products were pleasing for my needs. I have never used Veet products before.

Lou says:

The best way I’ve found to use an epilator is day one, shave your legs. Day two, use the epilator. Day 3-infinity, use the epilator. That way you will only be You will probably get to the point where you only have to use the epilator every few days or maybe even once a week. I have very coarse, fast growing leg hair so I try to use it every day. And don’t forget to exfoliate to prevent ingrown hairs!

My says:

I too was like Mrs. Pumpkin when I tried Veet. I left it on for the max time and it gave me more than a few burns.

Andria says:

I’ve seen ads about that Veet In-Shower stuff, and the first thing I thought of was, oh my god, what if you accidentally touched the hair on your head, etc. afterward, or didn’t wash it all off before you washed your hair and a little bit of your hair come out? I have a hard time believing that product would work on me, but it’s very possible it would work on someone else. I pretty much have to shave everyday. I can already feel stubble coming in at the end of the 1st day past shaving. I wish the hair on my head grew like that!

21.
Tammy says:

I’ve had good experiences with Veet. I like Veet better than Nair. Not all the hair will come out but it gets the majority of them. I use a tweezer to get those stubborn hairs off my leg.
Why can’t there be a inexpensive and simpler way?!

Robyn says:

I have an electric shaver, which can be done dry or wet, I love, love, love it. And if you happen to miss a spot just use it dry over that spot and then your extremely clean shaven.

Veet & Nair have never, never, never worked for me, I always try when they improve it but nope still horrible. If you can afford it laser hair removal is supposed to be awesome.

One product I have been extremely suprised at is a bath& body works product. It is a lotion thing for rough spots (the bottle sits best upside down and one side of the bottle is covered in bumps). You can see the exfoliating stuff in it. I think it comes in all the basic scents. Well that and an exfoliator type thing. Mine looks like a mini pizza square with a handle server with bumps. If you use the BB stuff on it and use it on your feet (mine are always extremely rough) scrub, scrub, scrub, it doesn’t hurt, you come out with extremely soft feet, and I only have to do it about once a week (it take about ten min. total).
