We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!
About Mrs. Kiwi

Made Another Decision

July 9th, 2007 @ 12:48 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

I’m so proud of myself. I actually went to the mall this past weekend to try on wedding bands. I’ve been very lazy thinking about this wedding band thing. I’m thinking that I would like to keep this wedding band forever, and never really upgrade it, so I want it to be something that will look good forever.

I went into Whitehall Jewelers first because the first engagement ring I fell in love with was there. We didn’t buy it, but I still loved it. Okay, I was single, so I had no one to buy it for me. Made Another Decision : wedding los angeles rings Blush09 blush09 Don’t judge me. Made Another Decision : wedding los angeles rings Whateva010 whateva010 Anyway, I walk in, the only customer there, greeted by two sales associates. When one asks me if I’m looking for something in particular, I say, “Yes, I am looking for a wedding band.” Immediately, the associate closest to me hurries over, calculator in hand, as I inspect the merchandise. I see one band I like in particular, a white gold band set with a half carat of prong-set diamonds. I slide it on (okay, I force it on), and she tells me the price including taxes (that trusty calculator sure came in handy!).

I really liked that band, but I tried on a few more. And… still go back to that other one. When she grabs for my engagement ring, she immediately puts her thumb on my center stone and says, “Nice ring.” Mr. Kiwi was picking up dog food and was going to meet me, so I told her I’d come back when he gets there. She looks me up and down and says, “Suuuure.” What? Okay then.

When Mr. Kiwi shows up, I tell him my story and he decides he doesn’t want to buy from there, so I have to ditch the sales lady who is now standing outside the store. Watching for me? Maybe. Scouting for fresh meat? Most likely.

So, I came to the conclusion that I do want a band with diamonds on it, and I won’t be shopping at Whitehall. Mr. Kiwi, luckily, came to the rescue with the knowledge of a jeweler friend in Downtown Los Angeles. Sweet.

Miss Kiwi. I too am from CA. I am the OC. I have a great family friend who is a jeweler and we are getting our bands from her. Her inventory is sparse but she can order/custom order anything and her deals are great…really….anyhow if you need more options I can send her info to you.GOOD LUCK

Miss Kiwi… I would have been SHOCKED that a jeweler actually put her greasy thumbprint smack-dab on my center stone. What–is she new? No touchies!! Good thing you are going elsewhere. I find that jewelry stores located in malls are filled with bad sales people–with the exception of Ben Bridge (where I have NEVER EVER been disappointed). When we were initially looking at rings, a woman at Zales actually said, “So I see you like the markiss diamond.” I was like, “Huh? Oh you mean markeee.” She didn’t even know how to say her own product. Boo.

Good luck with your search!

Miss Kiwi, I just had to say something here. My dad owns/runs our family jewelry stores (sadly, not in CA) and let me tell you - if his employees were to treat a potential customer that way, there would be _serious_ consequences. I live in Seattle now and I really understand the way he runs the business. We have Microsoft millionaires that live in their t’s and jeans. There’s no way to know by looking at someone who they are. ;) She was willing to judge you without knowing anything about you, and that’s just not cool. Please know that one sucky jewelry store doesn’t speak for them all. Good luck with your search, and I really hope the next one is better. :)

When we went to the Zales Outlet by us (where FH got my e-ring) it was the first store went to. We tried on rings for him and ring wraps for me and got an idea of what we each liked. We narrowed it down to each of our favorites, but decided since it was our first visit anywhere we would hold off. When we told the saleslady this she looked at me and said (verbatim) “Are you kidding? I just cut the tag.” I really wanted to be like “So what? Tape it back together.” But we just let it slide and got the info of the ones we liked on the back of her business card.

We went to some other places and I went back to the ZO a few days later to look at the wrap again. A different lady helped me and I told her of the awful experience I had and she was mortified. I also spoke to her manager. One thing was for sure - if I decided to buy that wrap, it would most definitely NOT give her a dime of the profit.

Boy am I glad I went back and talked to someone else. If we had let that lady guilt us into buying because she cut the tag, I would have walked out of there with a white gold wrap, with the impression it was platinum!!! When I went back and told the other lady I wanted to look at the platinum ring wrap in the case, she told me they don’t carry platinum but might be able to order it.

I’m so glad we decided to shop around. Not only did we find a better deal at Kay, we formed an actual relationship with those ladies, who were absolutely wonderful.

I feel your pain. I’ve had such trouble in shopping for a wedding band - including sales people who say they will find out a price to order ring X with slightly different specifications (width etc.) who NEVER calls back. Or, the sales person who tells me it doesn’t make sense to get an eternity band and I should just get one with half the diamonds (umm..since that’s the one I could buy TODAY). And finally, the sales person who told my fiance that they had just sold alot of their men’s bands and to come back in the FALL for more options!! Crazy!

We had an interesting experience with the Zales Outlet near us as well. We went after he proposed to me, so we could pick out the band together, with the intention of having my uncle (a jeweler) set the diamond — but did not share this info upfront.

The saleswoman was sort of tacky. We told her what we were looking for, (Something in the 3/4 to 1ct range) and she immediately gave me a 1 ct, then even put a 1.5 ct on me! You need to understand that my hands are small. My current just-over-1-ct is borderline big on my finger, but the 1.5 she put on me - !!!
Plus all their bands were plain, solid gold/platinum, we were looking for something with some detail.
After I tried some on, she said “Why don’t you go shopping next door at West Elm, honey, while we talk numbers…”
Ew.

We bought my e-ring band at a local jeweler recommended to us. Where we later went back to buy our wedding bands.

Good call on Whitehall Miss Kiwi! There’s a reason why they are closing all over the nation!

Sometimes the people in the mall outlet stores are just horrible. They’ll hire anyone though - trust me, I know someone who worked at one… probably because they got fired from Burger King. Never feel bad about leaving and then coming back for a different salesperson.

wow miss kiwi - i cannot believe she touched your diamond and gave you the once over. i’d be so PO-ed.

I went shopping with my mom last Mother’s Day at Zales to look for a nice piece of jewelry to get my Grandmother. The saleslady that was helping us showed us this beautiful diamond necklace and earring set. When we asked what kind of diamonds they were she said they were real and were cubic zirconias. I asked her “aren’t cubic zirconias synthesized?” and she told us “No, they’re the real thing.” uh-huh. right.
