About Open Question

I need some outside advice as I just haven’t been to that many weddings! Since I am of African heritage, I plan to have a african dance troupe perfom during my reception ( about 20 mins) as a tribute to my heritage.  However I have no idea when they should perform during the reception.  I’ve heard so many things and I just need a little advise from the hive.  Some people say that folks won’t pay attention if you have a performer while they are eating.  Have you ever been to a reception where there was a performance- when did they perform?  Please let me know when you think the best time for the performance is

1) after my fiance and I are announced (for this option we will postpone our first dance until after dinner has been served)
2) after my fiance and I have our first dance, before appetizers are served
2) after the toasts; during appetizers
3) during the main course

Thanks in advance for the advice,

Laura

Have you considered having the performance during cocktail hour? Personally I think this is the time during which guests would enjoy being entertained because often the bride and groom are busy finishing pictures.
If that isn’t an option then I would say the best time would be right after your first dance. In this case you could step off the dance floor and enjoy the moment with your guests!

I was also going to suggest during the cocktail hour. That’s the time when guests are most likely to be bored.

I think during dinner would be just fine, so long as it was once everyone was served and had been eating for awhile. You won’t get people to pay attention if they’re still in line for the buffet, or there’s 20 waiters waltzing around with huge trays of food.

Have you ever been to a dinner show? I really enjoy them because you are entertained as you eat. You can only see so much artistic value in your food…

during dessert (if you’re having dessert served other than wedding cake) is a good option. I just went to a wedding where speeches were done right after dessert was passed out and this worked out very well.

I would actually recommend against doing it during dinner or dessert, i think guests will be more drunk/less likely to pay attention and wanting to get on the dance floor.

A southern choir performed during a friend’s reception during the cocktail hour and then again right after the bride and groom came in, during appetizers, and was well received. I thought the timing was great.

Cocktail hours is already set with a separate performer- so its not an option. Thanks for the feedback!

piggy back question - if you are having a performer, are you also doign a slideshow? do you think that’s overkill? thanks!

my friend had lion dancers right after the ceremony. (the party hadnt walked out yet and guests were still seated.) you could have it before/after the bridal party has been introduced since ppl will be paying attention then anyway. it might be a good start to the party or to get people’s attention for the bp introductions. i wouldnt do it after dinner b/c ppl might leave around then or be walking aorund socializing.

i really enjoyed the lion dance. i think a wedding with an african dance troupe would be kick ass!
