When I’m not obsessing about our wedding I play the cello in my band (which Mr. Radish is in too), read as much as I can, sleep even more, travel whenever possible, and try to find time to have fun with my friends. I’m also working on finishing up my journalism degree with a concentration in environmental reporting and I’m the VP of my campus Amnesty International chapter… so I’m a pretty busy bee.

Some Don’t Like It Hot

July 9th, 2007 @ 11:02 am by Mrs. Radish

I found these hand fans for about $4.99/dozen (that’s about 40 cents per fan) from the Oriental Trading Company. I think I’m going to buy about 8 dozen to hand out with the programs at the ceremony since it’s probably going to be so hot, and we’ll have a lot of elderly guests.

They also have them in plain white for the same price. Should I get some of the plain fans for any of the gentlemen who have too much testosterone to fan themselves with birds and flowers? Dudes get hot too.

Is this a good idea? Or am I just going overboard? It would only cost about $50. Someone please tell me if I am being excessive.

Yes! OMG I love these - I may get them for my ceremony! They are adorable. I’d say if it’s in your budget yes yes yes. Birdies! :P

I think it’s a great idea - people do get hot! And fanning yourself with the program (unless it too IS a fan) doesn’t always cut it. Real fans always do a better job.

Well… we are putting programs on every seat, so people can use them as fans. Plus, you actually get hotter fanning yourself. We’re having yarmulkes and programs, plus lemonade and iced tea before the ceremony… so I decided not to have one more thing to pass out to guests.

I think it’s a cute idea, but unless it’s going to be really, really hot I probably wouldn’t bother. You’re going to have one more thing to hand out, one more thing to clean up afterwards, and just one more thing to worry about in general. People can use their programs to fan themselves.

Also, if you’re having a video it might look a bit distracting to see people constantly fanning themselves with big white fans…

I love the idea and I think all the fans can look really lovely in pictures.

Not overboard for me but I may not be the one to ask as I’ve been told I’ve gone overboard, missed the toss of the life ring, and am sinking fast into the abyss of all that is wedding.

ps- I too have fans for my Church- we have no A/C though and *I* personally would appreciate it if someone handed me a fan in a non-airconditioned facility.

The paper fans were a huge hit at our wedding. (it was in Jamaica) Many of our guests would have been very uncomfortable in the heat if it weren’t for those fans. It’s definitely not excessive. It’s considerate!

As someone who gets REALLY hot easily, I would be VERY appreciative of a fan.

I say yes - there’s nothing like being hot to distract a person from more important events (say, the ceremony,) and programs just don’t make good fans.

I would just get all white and then you don’t have to worry about having a set of bird fans and a set of white ones…they will all be uniform and look nice. :-) I think it’s considerate too.

I used fans at my outdoor wedding a couple of weeks ago and they were a huge success. Got lots of compliments, and thanks for providing them. I originally wanted the palm/rattan fans, but ended up finding a great deal on the sandlewood fans. We also attached a tag to the fans, saying thanks for sharing in our special day, with our names and date. It made a very practical favor.

We got fans, though I ordered them from Asian Ideas (http://www.asianideas.com/paperfanwhite.html) because for some reason I couldn’t find plain white one on Oriental Trading Company. Hmmm.

Our wedding is outside in Denver at the end of July and the average temp for the date is like 96 degrees, so we’re providing fans and bottled water. I think people will appreciate them, and I’m a teacher, so if they leave them behind, I’m confident I can find something to do with them in a lesson at some point!

As far as white vs. flowered, I think the men will consider them both equally effeminate, so get whichever looks better to you. Don’t get two different kinds just for the sake of the guys.

Which one to choose should depend on what works better for your wedding look. I know that I’ve always appreciated the fans at any hot ceremonies where everyone is forced to sit, and often in the sun! Mine will be outdoors as well so I’m doing program fans.
