Decisions, Decisions

July 10th, 2007 @ 6:28 pm by Mrs. Pearl

For our wedding favors, I planned for us to give out cookie favors like the one Miss Lime is giving out. The cookie shop is one that is right by the college we both went to and is famous for their delicious cookies at rock bottom prices. The problem, however, is that the cookies do not save very well — we’d have to pick up the cookies, bag, and tag them on the Friday before the wedding. I don’t know about anyone else, but that doesn’t sound like a lot of fun to me.The alternative is possibly just as crazy (if not moreso). My maid of honor and I would bake two different types of cookies on Thursday night and bag them up then.

The pro is that homemade cookies seem to hold up better than the cookie shop cookies. We can have them done the day before and not have to stress on the night before the wedding/rehearsal day. Oh, and it seems like a more personal touch that I think hope my guests will appreciate and enjoy.

The cons are obvious — having to have a big baking production is the biggest one. Also, there’s only one day difference, so is it worth it in the long run?

What do you think?

Any way you could explain your predicament to the cookie place and add some emphasis to how much you LOVE their cookies and really want them to be a part of your wedding - add in a little extra cash and they could bag and tag the cookies? Doesn’t hurt to ask and may save you the stress. I’m not an advocate of spend more, but in some cases…

I say whatever would be least stressful. I like Tricia’s idea, too, unless it’s just not in your budget. I mean, that close to your wedding, baking could either be a fun, relaxing production, or it could be insane, depending on your personality.

I also think this is one of those situations where it might not hurt to shell out a little money for peace of mind. Do you have a wedding planner? For some extra bucks, would she be willing to bag and tag the cookies for you?

I agree with bethgraced, keep the stress to a minimal. If you think you have the time and the money then go for it, but if you will get too busy I say skip it and head to the store.

You are referring to Diddly Reese by UCLA? If so, I don’t think they would take Tricia’s offer. That place is always mobbed. And the cookies are only really tasty day of. I thought of buying Diddy Reese cookes for a cookie station but decided against it because the cookies become stale so fast (damn you, all natural ingredients!). How about getting brownies there instead? I think they would last longer.

Calling Miss Blueberry!

Or go with something that really keeps an extra day or two like bar cookies (brownies, lemon bars, Rice Krispie treats…?)

What about trying to freeze them? I’m guessing it probably won’t work out too well if you package them and then freeze them, but you could make the cookies yourself a few weeks ahead of time and freeze in an airtight bag/plasticware. You will just have to do the packaging a day or two before the wedding. Another option would to make and freeze the dough ahead of time.

I’d go with cookies from someone else. Apple Cookie & Chocolate company can hot-stamp your name/message/whatever onto their cookie packages, and their cookies last about a week unfrozen. http://www.applecookies.com/ (The website is only for business gifts; you have to call to discuss wedding favors.)

How about you do plan C and ask your friend who rhymes with Janet to do it for you on Friday or Saturday? I’m sure she’d be more than happy to stuff the pre-made bags and seal them for you, then bring them to the wedding. :-)

Skip making the cookies - it sounds like too much work!!

As much as I love Diddy Reese I would not get cookies from them because the cookies are only good day (or night) of.

Why not just make the cookies from scratch? You could always make the dough a couple of days earlier, freeze it then bake the cookies. Perhaps you can set this up with a friend where you make the batter earlier and they bake it and bag it later. That’s what bridemaids are for.

Goodness, I should seriously pay Diddy Reese a visit even though their price went up to a $1.25.

Nanette’s idea is fab. I may be paying my coordinator to do this.

I convinced my BMs not to bake a day or two before. They generously offered to. They work 12 hour days, so I’m not sure why they think we’ll be in massive baking mode.

I want DR cookies for my candy/cookie buffet too. I was thinking of getting one of the GM to get a bunch of cookies the day of, and have glassine baggies there so if people want them to-go they can bag it up themselves. Less work for me. Almost all the GM are bruins so hopefully won’t mind making a trip.

I know a fellow bruin fan who can help Janet with that too… :) ;)

*shaking my fist*

Damn you Diddy Riese and your DELICIOUS COOKIES!!!

I suppose the best solution is to go the day of the wedding and get them picked up, bagged, and stickered.

This will require some maneuvering and some gracious friends, but I think that I have some good people in mind :)

Oh, and GO BRUINS!

Why don’t you outsource the bagging/packaging (maybe even picking up of them all from the bakery) to someone via craigslist??? I’m sure you could find someone willing to do it even fairly cheaply!

DO NOT MAKE YOUR COOKIES IF IT IS COST EFFECTIVE TO BUY THEM!!!!!

My suggestion is to ask someone else to bag and tag your cookies from the cookie shop the day before the wedding…maybe a close friend that is not a bridesmaid but is still willing to help…or a server if you are using your friends instead of professionals.

Some people feel fulfillment and needed even with small jobs like this one (and it saves you lots of time and stress!!!!)

we picked up (2 hour drive), bagged, and tagged all our candy apple favors the day before. hubs and i had family (bro, his wife, sil, sil’s bf) to help us and it went really quickly.

well, minus the driving part to pick them up but hubs and my brother went so… yeah, send a friend!

Not much to add, as I’m going to have the same dilemma - but thought I’d chime in with a Gooooooooooo Bruins!

i got married 3 weeks ago and i gave out home-made cookies as favors. not only did my 5 bridesmaids help with the baking, which made the whole process A LOT easier, but they were also a HUGE hit! i say if you want to give your guests something that’s personal (since you’ll be making them) and something that you know will be of good quality, go with the home-made cookies. oh, but do yourself a favor and go with something that’s fairly easy to prepare.
