Give Me The Star Treatment

July 11th, 2007 @ 11:26 am by Mrs. Peppermint

In a little shy of two weeks, I’m going out to the desert (120 degree heat here I come–don’t worry, I nearly bathe in sunscreen) for my makeup trials. I’m excited and a bit nervous. One recommendation for you fellow December brides, start looking for makeup/hair stylists early. As I’ve learned, that’s arguably their busiest season (holiday parties, etc), so get crackin’ before they book up! I got a few referrals for local salons to look at from some of my other vendors. I know of some good places in Los Angeles, but the 90-mile drive made it necessary to pick someone local.

Nonetheless, I thought I’d throw out info on an amazing place to go for makeup for all you LA girls out there: Valerie of Beverly Hills. I’ve seen many of her products listed in bridal magazines and she has quite the celebrity clientèle.

One of her most valuable services IMHO (and the best value) is the “makeup lesson”. Now I’m convinced that some people are just born with the ability to artfully apply eye shadows and the like, but sadly I am not one of them. What the lessons do (as the name suggests) is teach you technique, product recommendations and a basic makeup regimen. They’ll make you a chart and write down all of the steps–really invaluable for someone like me who thinks they’ll remember it, but five minutes later can’t remember anything!

Some of her most popular products are:

Roses blush and Angelina blush ($55)

valerie valerie01

Eye Candy Set ($95) (a great kit for the honeymoon, ladies…)

Do you guys have any tips for going to my makeup trial? I’m planning on bringing LOTS of pictures, but other than that are there questions I should ask? Things I should think about??

If you plan on not wearing any make-up to your “lesson” (recommended) make sure you bring pictures of YOURSELF in make-up, if you wear it normally. This will give the artist a much better idea of how you like to look day to day. Other than that, don’t be afraid to ask them to repeat things or be more specific. Have fun! :)

The biggest tip is not to be afraid to tell the artist that you don’t like something. They should be happy to change things up based on what you like. Also, if you don’t wear much makeup day to day, you might be freaked out by how much blush and eye makeup they try to put on you. Just keep in mind, that they do have a purpose, which is to make you look good in pictures. I just had a makeup trial and thought I looked like a whore but then she took pictures and the daylight toned down the makeup big time.

Hey Miss Peppermint! I’m getting married in the Palm Springs area in January and also looking for a good makeup artist in the desert. I’ve found a few here in LA willing to make the trek out there (with slight travel fees) but I think it will just be easier to have someone out there. I’ve had one trial out there already and it didn’t go very well. I ended up a light shade of orange! If you find anyone good, can you post about it?

Definitely be honest! My first trial, I tried to make myself believe that I loved how I looked. I hardly wear any makeup, and I didn’t even look like me. So I ended up having to pay for another trial. So be true to yourself so you don’t look soooo different no one recognizes you and be honest with the artist and yourself! Have fun!!!
